Hi Team,
Kindly explain the difference between DFS and File server in Windows 2008 server. what is the major difference and use of each.
2k8R2
Scenario -
'Users' group currently has access to a specific folder. we remove 'Users' and add a more restrictive security group. What happens to those users access who only had access to that folder via the 'Users' group? Are they immediately denied any further access (even if they are in the folder and have files open from that folder?
TIA!
OK, so, I was having an issue with around 10 DFS-R groups, where they've been in existence for a while, but for some reason they're now saying they're waiting for Initial replication. After just deleting the rep group and re-creating it didn't fix the issue, I deleted the rep group, deleted the dfsrprivate folder from both rep partners, and then re-created the DFS-R group. As far as that goes, DFS-R is working great.
However, now I have another issue...I left the Namespace entry in place, since it's accessed by the users. But when I created the new DFS-R group, naming it exactly the same, the replicated folder entry under the Replicated Folders tab in the rep group shows it as not being published. However, if I go into Namespaces, I can see it there, and I can browse to it just fine.
So, without deleting the Namespace entry, is there a way to attach the new DFS-R group to the pre-existing Namespace entry? If it needs to be deleted, it'll be a huge hassle, since I'll have to put in a change order, and I'll need to get it scheduled, and a communication will need to go out, etc etc. I could swear I've been able to re-create rep groups before without going through this hassle, so I'm not sure what happened.
Geeks,
Is there a way to find by command line the physical location of a dfs path, without checking the properties, DFS tab of the folder-
\\domainname\root\users\<username> is sitting on \\filer1\share_users\<username>
Do suggest.
Cheers, Alan.
I have set up an FTP server with FTP site on Windows Server 2012, allowed anonymous on sever (in IIS) and at site level. When I try to access the FTP site the server askes for credentials, even though I allowed anonymous. Whichever credentials I add, when prompted are rejected as wrong, even the admin account. I've tried this several times with different accounts and double checked that the credentials are in fact not wrong, but the browser doesn't accept it and tools like FileZilla and SmartFTP says explicitly"wrong password" (even when I access as anonymous). Why would this be?
EDIT: It doesn't matter whether I allow anonymous or not, I've tried all variations, but I always end up here: I'm asked for credentials, and the credentials are wrong (not not accepted, but wrong password or user name.)
Hi,
I hope you don't mind but I have a couple of questions regarding DFS. I am in the process of configuring DFS where I work to replace the generic file server set up we have. We have two sites that are on the same domain, eventually we'll have a DFS server in each location. I'm almost there, at the moment I have two servers configured with DFSN/R, I have replication between the two servers. Both servers are configured in the namespace, referral statuses are enabled, I have edited the referral ordering so they are first and last among all targets, both are members of the replication group.
The issue I'm having at the moment is when I take down the first target the namespace is no longer available, in order to work on any files or folders I have to navigate to \\server-name\company-docs
Firstly, does anyone know how I can provide a highly available namespace so that if the link between the two sites fails, users at each site will still be able to reach files and folders via \\domain-name\company-docs instead of having to revert back to \\server-name\company-docs?
Secondly, can I configure DFS so that users at each site connect to the DFS server on that site?, as I think because they are both in the same domain they will both have the same cost.
Thanks in advance.
Jon
Guys, good morning
I have 2 File Server and DFS namespace, with replication smoothly.
However some folders are with the wrong timing, and very strange, for example:
Fileserver01 - Notifications folder contains 1362 files
Fileserver02 - Notifications folder contains 1362 files
The problem is when commands list the amount of files directly from the folder (right button on the folder - properties), the amount of non knocks files, now if I open each folder and select all the files the amount hits.
Examples:
Folder notifications fileserver01 - I right button and go to properties - shows 1362 files
Folder notifications fileserver02 - I right button and go to properties - shows 1405 files
Hi guys,
i am following the Microsoft documented process for cloning a DFSR database. Pretty simple to follow, but I am receiving an error when running the Export-DfsrClone that is required to export the database so that it can be imported into the new member.
The command I run is Export-DfsrClone -Volume D: -Path D:\DfsrCloneBasic -Validation Basic
The error I receive is as follows -
Export-DfsrClone: Could not read the DFSR volume configuration file for preseeding instructions. Confirm the XML file is present in the following directory: "D:\DfsrCloneBasic\Config.xml" Could not find file 'D:\DfsrCloneBasic\Config.xml'.
At line:1 char:1
+ Export-DfsrClone -Volume D: -Path D:\DfsrCloneBasic -Validation Basic
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
+ CategoryInfo : ReadError: (D:\:String) [Export-DfsrClone], DfsrException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : Export-DfsrClone.OutputFolderPreseedingInformation.IOException,Microsoft.DistributedFileSystemReplication.Commands.ExprtDfsrCloneCommand
When I then go into D:\DfsrCloneBasic, the folder is empty. The error is ambiguous and doesn't really give any ideas. There appear to be no errors in the event logs.
If I run "Export-DfsrClone -Volume D: -Path D:\DfsrCloneBasic -Validation None" then it succeeds and copies folders to the specified path. But Microsoft recommend running with "Basic" so can someone give any ideas as to what is going on?
Thanks.
Hi,
Is it possible to change my disks as I change my Case for my Server without having trouble with reseating the Disks in my Pool to a different SATA/SAS Port, Or is in a Storage Space is necessary that disks stay at the original port as created?
Thanks
Greetings,
I have a domain namespace that has multiple Namespace Servers that are DCs from various sites and subnets hosting 4 folders which have various folder targets. I cannot understand why the clients are going to DCs outside of it's site even though the client is on the same subnet as the DC that is hosting the namespace. Within sites and service all the sites have a cost of 100 but each site has a different subnet and honed correctly to the DC that corresponds to the subnet. For instance, my DC is on 192.168.195. subnet and the client PC is on 192.168.232 subnet but they are bothed honed to the same site (Houston). However, the client is reporting the below details.

When I ping the namespace, it gets resolved from another server and not the local DC even though the DNS default server is the local DC.

What is not configured correctly for the client to resolve the namespace query and access to the local DC and target servers for the subnet the client is honed to? I"m at a lost at this point as to why that is. Doesn't the subnet take precedence over site cost when the client does a namespace query and access? Where is that configured for Active Target and Target Set for the client? Any feedback to assist in the matter will be greatly appreciated.
The domain namespace referrals is configured for 600 cache duration
order method: lowest cost.
DFS servers are 2008 R2 and 2012 R2
I'm working on Windows Server 2012 which comes by default with various DFS CmdLets.
What I'm trying to do is get the ComputerName
and
the local
path
of a specific UNC share, that is hosted by other DFS servers (Win Srv 2008 R2) on the domain by using PowerShell.
An example:
Get-DfsnFolderTarget -Path '\\domain.net\share\folder\'
Expected result:
ComputerName = 'Server1'
Path = 'E\Home\folder'
I'm not really a network engineer, but I can't seem to find a way to retrieve this information based on the UNC path. Every time I try the CmdLet above I get an error:
Get-DfsnFolderTarget : Cannot get DFS folder properites on "\\domain.net\share\folder\"
At line:1 char:1+ Get-DfsnFolderTarget -Path '\\domain.net\share\folder\'+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ CategoryInfo : ObjectNotFound: (MSFT_DfsNamespaceFolderTarget:ROOT\Microsoft\...aceFolderTarget) [Ge

When trying a Test-Path
\\domain.net\share\folder\
it does say that it can be found. So I don't really understand.
Hello, I have Windows Server 2012 R2 with DFS role installed. I am using iscsi target connected as drive R:\ as source for replication, and another server as destination.
When I start DFS replication, it stops with this error: "The DFS Replication service failed to replicate the replicated folder at local path R:\WEB\CAT because the local path is not the fully qualified path name of an existing, accessible local folder."
The problem is probably in iscsi drive (when the source is another disk, replication works), but I dont know how to solve it - iscsi drive looks normal. I had the same configuration on windows server 2008 R2, and everything worked.
I tried to recreate replication group several times.
Any suggestion? Thank you.
Hello!
I have FileServer witch is installed on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standart edition. I have Fileserver role installed on it, and it has couple shares.
I want to monitor file locking, who do this locking, from where?
Can powershell or cmd provide such information?
Thank you!
I am receiving an error on a Windows 10 device when setting up Work Folders stating that sync isn't working as encryption can't be enabled (encryption is enforced for this sync share).
I have tried rebooting to make sure that there are no locks on the folder without any change. The error suggests checking that the folder isn't compressed (which it isn't) and quotes code 0x80c80314.
I have another Windows 8 device that is syncing happily to the work folder. There is no sign of the Windows 10 device in the list of devices trying to sync on the file server itself.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?
EDIT:
Just to add that this was working on the Windows 10 device but ceased when my AD account was accidentally deleted and then subsequently restored. At the time I received the following message
The Enterprise ID for this PC was remotely revoked by the issuing authority. Access to files in WorkFolders is blocked on this PC. To resume syncing, in the Work Folders Control Panel, click Stop using Work Folders and then recreate the Work Folders synchronization partnership.
I have tried stopping work folders on the device, deleting the work folder and then setting work folders up again but this hasn't worked.
Edit 2
I have seen that this is potentially resolvable by completely deleting a users profile and starting again
(http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/windows-81-work-folders-enterprise-id-revoked/2cedf263-830a-4b4d-b255-4e24c456be7d?auth=1) but this seems rather painful for a user (an unlikely to be possible in home user cases). Is there an easier solution?
Thanks
Alan
