Hi all;

I want to test MPIO with iSCSI Target in Windows Server 2012 R2. Is it possible? If so, how can I create a test environment?

Thanks

File filter format in DFS

Hi, I'm replicating various drawing files, and our drawing application, REVIT, produces intermediate "journal" files, of the format "name 01.NNNN.rvt", whereas the actual files saved files are of the format "name 01.rvt".  I wish to filter out the journal files (there can be lots at 100's MB each), and am going to a filter of

*.????.rvt

Is this the correct format for the filter?

TIA

Missing subfolder in W2k8R2 FSRM quota management Tool

We have a folder redirection policy. the folders Download, Desktop etc..  for all users are redirected to a share on a server.

On this share we have a quota of 250Mb. We have this working for more then a year.

Today I saw that 3 users folders are missing from the quota management tool. These folder are between 2 and 4 GB at the moment.

The permission on the 3 missing folders are correct. These folders are created the first time the users logs on.

The folders are on the share on the server, but I can't see them in the FSRM management tool.

How can I solved this.

Thanks

Large number of open file handles on fileserver (Server 2012R2) after user's rds session has long been terminated through log off

Hi,

we do have an rds farm with roaming profiles (not profile disks) consisting of 6 terminal servers ("srvts001" to "srv006" 2012 R2), 2 domain controllers ("srvdc01", "srvdc02" 2012 R2), 1 SQL/Fileserver ("srvsql01" 2012 R2).

Roaming profiles are stored on srvsql01 in share RDS. Oplocks are disabled, directory caching is disabled.

Everything was running without problems for 1 or 2 years. Recently (about 2 weeks ago) users began complaining about being logged on with a temporary profile. Investigation showed a lot of open file handles from previous (no longer existing) sessions on the file server.

E.g. user1 had logged on to rds one day and logged off in the evening (not just disconnected, really logged off) and when he logs in the other day on the rds farm he is logged on with a temporary profile due to the profile service being unable to access the roaming profile as it is (event log) "in use by another process".

Looking at the fileserver's open files we can see that a lot of files of that user profile (and of other users, too!) are shown as open - all with read option and no apparent locks.

When user1 loggs off these locks stay! Manually closing the open files on the file server allows the user to log on to the rds servers normally. Subsequent logging off may or may not create those stale open file handles.

We have no clue as to when these enormous amount of open file handles (we talk about 100s of files per user) happen. It seems to be at random and not hitting every user.

Has anyone ever met a similar problem? Or at least an idea on how to prevent logged off users to still have open files on the file server?

Any answer pointing in the direction of a possible solution or source of this problem is greatly appreciated!

ABE doesn't work on client computers - only server

Server 2012R2 file server, new AD setup.  ABE works fine if a user logs in directly to the file server and views the share by network drive or by \\servername\toplevelshare.

However, on any computer OTHER than the file server, the user sees all folders in toplevelshare.  Trying to access a folder they don't have access to gives them access denied message so NTFS is certainly working.

Client OS doesn't seem to matter, have tried Server 2012R2, Windows 7, and Windows 8 and all have the same result.

Any ideas?

The DFS Namespaces service keeps initialising every 30 minutes

Hi Everyone,

We have recently built a Windows Server 2012 R2 server and installed the File Services role with just the DFS Namespace and DFS Replication features. Although everything looks to be working fine, I am a little concerned why we keep getting the following repeating message, I see no indication that the service is crashing or failing but every 30 minutes we get the following information alert in the system.

The DFS Namespaces service has successfully initialized the shared folder that hosts the namespace root. Shared folder: ournamespace

The server also has the AD DS, DNS & DHCP roles installed as well, all operating fine. The server is patched up to within the past few months as well.

Cheers,
Leigh

DfsSvc Event ID 14554 "The DFS Namespaces service has successfully initialized the shared folder that hosts the namespace root" every 15-30 minutes

On a new, 2012 R2 DC virtualized on 2012 R2 Hyper-V, I am receiving DfsSvc Event ID 14554 every 15-30 minutes for each namespace root: "The DFS Namespaces service has successfully initialized the shared folder that hosts the namespace root."

It's a little unnerving. Why is this happening?

I found these related threads: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b66c99e9-18be-45f7-b02f-172ff9e2c7b6 The author of that thread commented on this thread, where someone was experiencing a similar problem: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/62f4f1a6-650e-49b6-b2ba-d1c4dadeb412

Bitlocker: Manage-bde vs Powershell

$

Hi,

To enable/configure bitlocker on Windows 10 devices or in general, what do you prefer?

Using manage-bde orpowershell cmdlets?

Will manage-bde become obsolete and has less features than the powershell cmdlets?

On technet I can find that both tools can be used (in existing or new scripts), but no information is given what would be prefered.
MDT still uses the manage-bde in their scripts for example.

Thanks!

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

$

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

Windows server 2008 R2 - Audit folder access

I was asked by our Security department to monitor file server activities and I'm scratching my head how to do so:

1. Date and Time of mailbox of the HR departmental share is accessed by the domain admins and other service account (backup etc)

There are domain admins and service accounts (backup etc) have full permission on the file server

If someone out there can give me some pointers to start, I really appreciate. Thanks a bunch!

Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials & DFS

$

I was wondering if anyone knew the specs when it comes to Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials and it's abilities with DFS.  I have researched and researched and can't find anywhere that it actually supports DFS and how many DFS roots it will support.

I know Server Essentials only supports 1 DFS root.  But I also know Windows Storage Server 2012 Standard supports unlimited DFS roots and when you look at the breakdown of the storage server editions essentials almost looks above standard since it can be a DC and the office365 integration.

Any help would be appreciated.

This: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=41703 doesn't have Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials listed...would be helpful.

thanks.

Storage Spaces - 'Failed Media'

Hi,

I have a thinly provisioned parity space comprised of 3 4TB drives that is reporting PhysicalDisk2 as 'Failed Media'

Before I commence an RMA I would like to be sure that it is likely to be caused by a drive issue. I'm not  entirely sure if there is a hardware related problem as it shows no S.M.A.R.T errors.

I have tried setting the drive to manual and running Repair-VirtualDisk, but to no avail; its usage gets marked as 'Retired' again.

Any thoughts or help appreciated,

Amith

Best way to utilize multiple server RAID arrays

Hello,

I have seven servers with various sized RAID arrays in each, each with a shared folder that is mapped on client computers.

Is there an optimal way to create a cluster or storage pool that will combine the storage of each server into one large "drive", but also provide some redundancy?

I already have a DFS share setup for certain documents/files, just not everything.

Here's a screenshot of my current setup:

Hyperv 2012 R2 VM's Enable write-caching Policy is it safe to be checked?

$

Ive laboured many hours to find the correct answer.

When viewing my Microsoft Virtual Disks within my VM's it the Write-caching Policy is showing Enable write-caching on the device. Ive tried to disable it but it cannot be disabled. Is my data safe on a unexpected crash of the VM?

My 2012R2 Hyperv host shows it as unchecked within the host drive properties and obviously the Storage subsystem is correctly set. Its just this seemingly wrong setting on the Hyperv 2012 R2 VM's.

So in short, IS this a setting I can ignore?

My Hyperv host is is Direct attached via SAS cabling to the Storage subsystem.

Any help appreciated.

DFS Staging Folder

Two Microsoft definitions..

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782648(v=ws.10).aspx

"DFS Replication uses staging folders to act as caches for new and changed files to be replicated from sending members to receiving members"

"It is important to note that the staging folder quota does not determine the largest file that can be replicated. In other words, it is possible to replicate a file that is larger than the configured quota of a staging folder"

So..

1) What is the meaning/sense of Staging Quota ??

2) If my quota is 500 MB and I put a need replicate a "new file" of 6000 MB...Does it work ??

DFSR WIndows 2012 R2, preexisting cleanup

$

Hi,

I have two Windows 2012R2 fileservers, one in each site (LIVE and DR).  The LIVE site uses DFSR to replicate various shared folders to the DR site.  Site to site link is 500Mb

Specifically there are 10 shared folders (10TB total size) where DFSR eventually seemed to give up on replicating them.  In fact it seems to have moved a lot of files into the Preexisting folder on the DR server and if you look at the shares on the DR server there's almost no data in them.  Data on the LIVE server is fine.

Effectively I want to re-sync these 10 folders to the DR site.  I was thinking that perhaps doing all 10 at the same time was asking too much, so I'm happy to do the first folder, and then add the second etc. until all are back in sync.

I have removed the 10 folders from the DFSR replication group.

The disk drive that holds these 10 folders on the DR server still has 10TB of space used up by the DFSR Preexisting folders, even though (1) I can see the new DFSR config has successfully replicated to the DR site and (2) I've left the server overnight to see if it would clean itself up.

So ideally I want to clear down this disk drive to make space for me to perform the re-replication of the first shared folder.

From what I've read I thought I might have to call the CleanUpConflictDirectory method

But I fall at the first hurdle:

WMIC.EXE /namespace:\\root\microsoftdfs path dfsrreplicatedfolderconfig get replicatedfolderguid,replicatedfoldername

Because the replicated folder no longer exists in the DFSR config.

I think I want to delete the shared folders, delete the DFSR content and that will leave me with 10TB of free space.  Then re-create the shared folders and re-enable replication (one folder at a time)

I know I can delete the shared folders, but how do I best go about clearing down the DFSR Preexisting folders?

Thanks,

Rob.

REFS - The volume repair was not succesful

After a power failure one of the REFS drives is not accessible anymore.

When you try to access it, you get the error:

------------------------------------------------

<driveletter>: is not accessible

The volume repair was not succesful

Is there a way to recover from this problem? Or is it only possible by using a third party REFS recovery tool?

Use DFS to centralize Backup Branch Office files

$

We have 150 Remote Offices plus 1 Central Office. User save documents (not profiles..) on their office. Also they have PST on these servers. We want to create 150 DFS (point to point). We would like use 2 or 3 servers on Central Office to centralize documents. For example:

CentralServer1: 50 DFS Replication Groups. Each Replication group contains CentralServer1 plus one Remote Office Server

CentralServer2: 50 DFS Replication Groups. Each Replication group contains CentralServer2 plus one Remote Office Server

CentralServer3: 50 DFS Replication Groups. Each Replication group contains CentralServer3 plus one Remote Office Server

After, we would use HP Data Protector to backup this 3 Central Site Server (3x50 directories)

I'd like to know possible limitation, issues, etc..with this infrastructure...
