Missing subfolder in W2k8R2 FSRM quota management Tool

$

We have a folder redirection policy. the folders Download, Desktop etc..  for all users are redirected to a share on a server.

On this share we have a quota of 250Mb. We have this working for more then a year.

Today I saw that 3 users folders are missing from the quota management tool. These folder are between 2 and 4 GB at the moment.

The permission on the 3 missing folders are correct. These folders are created the first time the users logs on.

The folders are on the share on the server, but I can't see them in the FSRM management tool.

How can I solved this.

Thanks

Storage Pool Degraded

Server 2012 R2 core with a Rackables SE3016 attached to host via SAS cable. I used remote server manager to configure storage pools for this JBoD device. I noticed a high-pitched sound coming from the JBoD devices so i fired up server manager and see the virtual disk is degraded. I found the drive that was defunct, removed it and installed another drive of equal size. Came back to server manager and added the disk to the storage pool in question. Under the physical disks section, i see the drive has a yellow triangle next to it, i right click the drive and select remove and it never removes.

I don't get an error when clicking remove. Diskpart on the host OS does NOT list the drive or drives:

How do i delete this physical drive and bring this virtual disk back online?

How can I view PDF attributes (i.e. Title) within MS server OS 2012 R2?

I can no longer view pdf attributes such as the Title of a document (not the file name) in the File Manager Window.  Someone recommended I use an external product called coolsoft by Altervista, but I would prefer to enable some feature within Windows.  Is this no longer possible in 2012 R2?

File Server Migration

Hello:

I am moving a File Server in a failover cluster to a new standalone server. I have already copied the files with its users permissions.

The actual server is named server1 and new server is named server2. Both servers are registered in the DNS server and both are member of a AD domain.

When I changed the ip address of server1 with the ip address of server 2 in the DNS server, I can't access to \\server1\shared but I can access to \\server2\shared.

Ping is working.

What can I do?

Thank you in advance.

File Permissions issues after moving file 2008r2

We have a File server (Windows 2008R2), which our Windows 7 machines have access for their files.  For each office there is a folder which accumulates documents that have been scanned. The office then moves the document to the department that should process it. Example Office1 scans to folder Office1scan and then moves the document to Operations folder.  Although we have it set to inherit permissions, the documents are not viewable by the department receiving the items.  Regardless of trying various settings, nothing works.

Deduplication in Windows server 2012

$

We've been successfully using deduplication on several file servers since the introduction of server 2012.

I have a major problem (for me).  I'm having trouble accurately determining how much space someone is using on these directory structures.  For years I have used a program called Windirstat to dig in and show me where space is wasted.  This tool gets confused by dedupe, i found doing some research that it's because it doesn't have access to the hidden folders.

I found a psexec command to run this program as System so it can see everything, but all that does is let it inside the dedupe directory to get that folder size.

Normally on a file system, I would use Windirstat to determine who is wasting space, maybe someone dumped 400GB of data in a share folder, and either remove it or work with them to remove it.

Now I have no way of seeing this wasted space.  Even if I do remove files, I don't know what affect that will have on the overall deduplication store, because ultimately that's where most of the space is used on this volume.

I now have a branch office server that is 93% full.  This server has no room for more drives.  While I'm working on procurement of a replacement server, i would like to dig in and see what pressure i can take off this system so it doesn't fill up, but I find myself helpless.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

DfsrRo continues to protect a folder on a RO member after it's no longer replicated

$

Removed a replicated folder in DFS management console, waited for AD replication, ran Update-DfsrConf...fromAd, waited some more, confirmed the folder in question no longer showed up in the DFSR config on all members, restarted the DFSR service, waited several hours more. The DfsrRo filter driver is still blocking Write I/O on the folder at the former Read-Only member. Tested by temporarily unloading the driver to ensure that it is, indeed, the driver that's blocking the I/O and not some other permissions.

Any ideas on how to get the filter driver to refresh its configuration?

Thanks!

Large number of open file handles on fileserver (Server 2012R2) after user's rds session has long been terminated through log off

$

Hi,

we do have an rds farm with roaming profiles (not profile disks) consisting of 6 terminal servers ("srvts001" to "srv006" 2012 R2), 2 domain controllers ("srvdc01", "srvdc02" 2012 R2), 1 SQL/Fileserver ("srvsql01" 2012 R2).

Roaming profiles are stored on srvsql01 in share RDS. Oplocks are disabled, directory caching is disabled.

Everything was running without problems for 1 or 2 years. Recently (about 2 weeks ago) users began complaining about being logged on with a temporary profile. Investigation showed a lot of open file handles from previous (no longer existing) sessions on the file server.

E.g. user1 had logged on to rds one day and logged off in the evening (not just disconnected, really logged off) and when he logs in the other day on the rds farm he is logged on with a temporary profile due to the profile service being unable to access the roaming profile as it is (event log) "in use by another process".

Looking at the fileserver's open files we can see that a lot of files of that user profile (and of other users, too!) are shown as open - all with read option and no apparent locks.

When user1 loggs off these locks stay! Manually closing the open files on the file server allows the user to log on to the rds servers normally. Subsequent logging off may or may not create those stale open file handles.

We have no clue as to when these enormous amount of open file handles (we talk about 100s of files per user) happen. It seems to be at random and not hitting every user.

Has anyone ever met a similar problem? Or at least an idea on how to prevent logged off users to still have open files on the file server?

Any answer pointing in the direction of a possible solution or source of this problem is greatly appreciated!

server with no local storage

Hi

I'm studying for server exam, i found some example questions on internet, and i have a question on a particular question about storage

the question is

You are the administrator for a large company. You plan to implement servers in the

environment that do not use local hard drives.

You need to recommend a supported storage solution.

Which technology should you recommend?

A. Clustered NAS

B. Cloud storage

C. USB flash drive

D. iSCSISAN

Answer: A

I don't agree with the proposed answer, for me as the question is that server do not have local disks, i would use iscsi, since i cannot boot form nas, someon has a an idea why the proposed answer is nas?

thank you

Windows Search stopps working

Hello,

Server 2008 R2 is indexing with windows search approx 600.000 files.

Almost every day it stops indexing new created files, we can search and find all old files, but not the new files.

When search crashed, and i try to to stop the service wsearch manually it doesn't work: error 1053. Trying to start the service manually also doesn't work.

After rebooting the machine, the search index adds all new files and works for a few hours, until it stopps again.

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

$

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

Windows Server 2016: storage spaces direct rdma requirement clarification?

So @ [https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt126109.aspx] the snippet about RDMA requirements states "For production deployments, it is required to have an RDMA-capable NIC (or a pair of NIC ports)." I'm confused - does that mean I can use a non-RDMA-capable NIC that has 2 (or more) ports?

Sharing permissions on backup usb doc needs to reapply every time its inserted

Hi,

We have backup plan with daily rotation of usb hdd drive. Each usb disk has a shared folder with everyone-write (sharing/security) given. But when we access this backup folder from over the LAN (or just from same server putting its ip address in "run" ) we receive "Windows cannot access, you dont have permission" error.

Each day we have to remove tick from <share this folder> and apply and then share it again to make this folder accessible.Strange thing is on each of these USB docs there is another shared folder and it never fails this way.Its always accessible. Its really appreciated if someone can shed some light on this.

OS-server2008R2 -windows updates installed.

Kind regards,

sajitha.

Deduplication get-dedupvolume 0% savingsrate

$

Hi

We have a 2012 R2 server that we use for backup. We have created a 31TB volume where we store some of our incremental and full backups. The lifecycle for those backup are 30 days. Thus the data on the disk are constantly in change since new backups are done everyday and backups older that 30 days are removed. We use Netbackup as backup software without any built in deduplication features active.

We have been using this method for about 1½ year without much problem. The last months we have started seeing problems. The free space on the volume have been reduced to only a few TB. Under normal operations we typically have between 10-15TB free with a deduplication ratio of 50-75%.

The size of the volume is 31TB. There are only one folder on the volume. When checking the properties on the folder it says Size: 23.5TB and Size on disk: 11.2TB. Still there are only 5.75TB free on the volume, it should be around 20TB free.

When running get-dedupvolume the values shown are often wrong. We didnt think to much about it until one day when running get-dedupvolume we got 0% savingsrate, even though the size and size on disk on the folder we deduplicate shows that deduplication is active. We ran update-dedupstatus to get it fixed. And after a day or two things started to look ok again when running get-dedupvolume.

Yesterday we got the same problem again, get-dedupvolume shows 0% savingsrate. Update-dedupstatus doesnt seem to help us this time.

Have we set up deduplication in a wrong way? Below are the jobs we run:

WeeklyScrubbing -We havent changed this job at all from the default settings. enqueue /scrub /scheduled /vol * /priority normal /throttle none /memory 50 /backoff

WeeklyGarbageCollection -Same with this one, we havent changed it. enqueue /gc /scheduled /vol * /priority normal /throttle none /memory 50 /backoff

ThroughputOptimization -This job we have changed. enqueue /opt /scheduled /vol * /priority high /throttle none /memory 50
Since we want this job to run almost all the time, we have set it to repeat every 1 hour for a duration of: indefinitely. Stop task if it runs longer than: 23 hours.

We changed ThroughputOptimization to run almost all the time since the data on the disk is constantly changing. Could this be the problem? That there is no time for the Scrubbing and GarbageCollection jobs to run?

Do we need to changed the priority on the Garbage and Scrubbing jobs?

Are there any know bugs regarding this? Any Hotfixes that we can apply?

Thanks. /Olof

Problem with a share - need prompt for credentials

Hello,

i have a problem with a windows share in windows server 2012R2.

I created a share with share permissions "everyone" "full rights" and ntfs permissions for a secuity group with some members.

The members of the security group can access the share without any problems.

If i try to access the share with an user that is not in the security group i get the error "you dont have the rights to access the share. contact your network administrator."

I would like to see a prompt for credentials, so i can enter the credentials of a user that has access rights to the share.

If i try to access the admin share C$ its working like this, i get an prompt for credentials and can then access the admin share.

What did i wrong on my share?

Server is 2012R2 and the clients are Win7

Thanks and best regards

DFS Replication Broken

$

I have DFS-R setup to replicate a folder between three sites (over site-to-site VPN) everything has been working just fine until Tuesday night when one server stopped replicating and reported the following error in the event log:

Log Name:      DFS Replication
Source:        DFSR
Date:          27/10/2015 01:46:05
Event ID:      5002
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      <server1>
Description:
The DFS Replication service encountered an error communicating with partner <server2> for replication group <rg>.

Partner DNS address: <server2>.fqdn

Optional data if available:
Partner WINS Address: <server2>
Partner IP Address: <ip2>

The service will retry the connection periodically.

Additional Information:
Error: 9032 (The connection is shutting down)
Connection ID: 15E022D9-7B70-4DCB-B974-EE865E664769
Replication Group ID: 452DB623-843F-4A00-A625-198A0C98AE9A

And a DFS healthcheck is reporting:

DFS Replication cannot replicate with partner <server2> due to a communication error. The DFS Replication service used partner DNS name <server2>.fqdn, IP address <ip2>, and WINS address <server2> but failed with error ID: 9032 (The connection is shutting down). Event ID: 5002

I have checked all of the networking and everything looks fine; name resolution works and I can also connect on the associate RPC ports and I also don’t believe that any changes to the firewalls were made.

The only thing that I can see at this stage is that the <server1> installed three updates just before the errors started:

- Security Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 (KB3080446)
- Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Server 2012 R2 (KB3093983)
- Security Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 (KB3088195)

I suspect that the issue is related to some incompatibility between the servers running slightly different patch level but I have tried searching around for any reported issues with DFS and these patches but cannot find anything. My next course of action is to remove the three patches from <server1> or install them on <server2> but before I do has anyone seen similar issue or can provide further guidance as to troubleshooting this?

Cannot defragment/optimize C drive on Server 2012

$

I have a Server 2012 server that I manage and I cannot get the C drive to defragment/optimize. I run the gui and it runs for a few seconds then says "Needs Optimization (26% fragmented)". I have tried running from command line with every switch I could find and it still will not complete. There are no errors in the event viewer (System or Application) and I am at a loss as to why it is happening. The C drive is on a RAID 1 array on 2x 300GB 10K SAS drives in a Dell Poweredge M520 (inside of a Dell PE VRTX chassis). When I first set the server up a year ago, the defragmenter/optimizer ran fine, but for the last couple of months it runs then stops, but does not defragment/optimize. I can optimize the D drive on the same array with no issues, just not the C drive. I also do not get any errors in the VRTX's control panel and that the drives are operating normally.

Here is what I get when I run defrag c: -a -v

C:\Windows\System32>defrag c: -a -v
