Just wondering how tiered storage in Server 2012 R2 would handle a mix of 15k and 7.2k HDDs with SSDs in regards to performance. Ideally, I'd love there to be a way to essentially have three tiers, but it seems Server 2012 R2 will only differentiate between SSD and HDD.
If I do make a tiered storage pool with SSD and both 15k and 7.2k HDDs, will windows understand 15k are faster than 7.2k? Will it just make the 15k slower because it is waiting for the 7.2k? Or will some files (blocks) be faster just because they happen to reside on 15k instead of 7.2k? Just curious and haven't found anyone else asking this question.
My current server is R520 with Perc 710 and:
2 x 400GB SAS SSD
3 x 300GB 15k SAS HDD
3 x 2TB 7.2k SAS HDD
I'm a high school teacher and we have this server here to 'play' and learn with the students.
Thanks a bunch!!
