Antivirus software exclusions for DFS and Hyper-V

$

I am rolling out an updated antivirus solution to our DFS server and Hyper-V (Windows 2008 and 2012) and I am curious of the following:

1. What are the exclusion suggestions for Hyper-V servers?  I found a URL that showed the exceptions to add but I thought there would be more for Hyper-V to exclude.

2. What are the specific exclusions to include for a DFS server?  I read somewhere that there were some DFSR hidden folders that need to be included but I would like to know if there is an official suggestion from Microsoft of what files/folders need to be excluded.

Strange System Shares appear on SOFS management page

Hi, my SOFS cluster is working perfectly fine, but Strange Shares keep appearing on the Server management page for the file and storage > shares section, it grows all the time and more shares appear, I have deleted them and it hasn't caused any issues. does anyone know what they are for, and why they are being created ? could it be something todo with DPM backups ?

is this something to worry about or just ignore ?

thanks

Network Drive Mapping for users who have Port 445 (possibly others) Blocked by their ISP to a Server 2008 system

$

Nice to see my original posts are still up.  I was hoping that in the ensuing time someone had found a solution.  At least I can now see many other posting the same problems.  :)  Thought I was losing it for a while.

We have 100% proven that the problem (in our case) is from the ISP blocking port 445 (possibly others but 445 for SURE) with the reasoning that it prevents the spread of some Internet "worms".  It also just happens to prevent people who work from home from being able to map to their network drives at work.

What I was hoping was that eventually someone would comer up with a solution for this short of having to load a server using a different OS from Windows.  The SMB protocol is the one needing port 445 as far as I can tell.  Not all ISP block port 445 and the laptops that use those ISP's  have no problem.  Unless they travel.  Then it is "hit or miss" as to whether the ISP for the Hotel they stay at blocks it.

I have run multiple tests to prove that this was in FACT the problem.  Even the particular ISP in question which is a very large national ISP company freely admits they do this supposedly to prevent the spread of an unnamed Internet Worm.  It also happens to prevent Business use of their Internet by Home Subscribers at they cannot map to their Business Servers which also need port 445 to map.

I have used WebDAV successfully to get around this but at a huge loss of speed and performance.  Cloud services all do essentially the same thing and all have pretty much the same loss of speed.

If anyone has come across a method of allowing a drive mapping to be rerouted to any other port, that is the only hope I have short of changing to an alternate OS for the Office Server and even then I cant be sure until I try if it would help.  I read somewhere about the possibility of routing through a proxy but again, the problem would still be that the requests for mapping are expected on port 445 on the server and they will not get through even to the proxy since the originating ISP is the one blocking the port from the User's system.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated  I have posted this question now for several years with no one yet providing a working solution.  Hope burns Eternal though :)

Public Folder Permissions

Hi people,

I have a Public shared folder, of which I would like to limit users the ability to save or create folder at the root of the P (drive). Windows 2012 Standard 64bit.

E.g.

N:\ (root) - Users permission to view

N:\Folder A\ - Users permission to view, create, modify and delete

N:\Folder B\ - Users permission to view, create, modify and delete

N:\Folder C\ - Users permission to view, create, modify and delete

.

.

.

etc.

Is this possible?

Thank you,

Can't access shared folders on win 2012 R2 with Android phone

Hello, this is my first post here so I don't know if I choose the right category......

But anyway, my problem is like this

I‘ve got a win 2012 r2 server(192.168.1.10), installed with essential experiences and anything comes with that;

A win 7 PC(192.168.1.2) connected to the server by connecter;

A Android smart phone(192.168.1.5).

There is no problem with the PC visiting the server's SMB share & the phone visiting the PC's SMB share, but I can't access the server's share from my smart phone.

When I'm using x-plore I got “failed to connect", and when using ES file explorer, I got a flash of ”please wait“ and nothing happens.

I've tried turn off the firewall ,no help.

checked the firewall log , I found "2014-03-14 16:08:30 ALLOW TCP 192.168.1.5 192.168.1.10 33531 445 0 - 0 0 0 - - - RECEIVE". I suspect this means the firewall has nothing to do with my problem.

checked event log, no finds(I'm not sure what to look for, but I didn't find anything about my phone's ip under things starts with SMB( ex: SMBClient, SMBServer.....))

enabled ”send unencrypted password to 3rd-party SMB server“ in local security policy, nothing changed

I have no idea where the problem lies, can anyone help me with this stuff?

Thanks

Server question

I'm basically very new to this & even think I'm posting this under the wrong section.. So lately with school I did that one thing called peer to peer networking, it looks quite interesting..

My laptop HDD died & I will be buying a SSD, but I'm someone that needs space.. I have a working computer (Windows vista) that I don't really use & it has 900GB free space. Is there a chance I use it as some sort of private cloud, like the dropbox system but so I can only access it through my home? Will it be a peer to peer network, or are there better options for me?

Please if any forum moderator sees this, could you move my topic to the right section? Thanks in advance.

DFSR triggering tons of quota emails.

I have folders with a quota which are replicated to other servers which have identical quotas. If a user fills their home directory DFSR triggers tons of emails every single time it touches the folder. How do I put a stop to this while still maintaining my email warning?

Email:

User NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM has exceeded the 100% quota threshold for the quota on D:\SharedFolders\HomeDrives\UserName on server FileServer02. The quota limit is 2048.00 MB, and 2048.00 MB currently is in use (100% of limit).

Hello-

I'm very new to DSF and DSF-R technology.

Can someone direct me to a guide of some sort that I can read on how DFS really works from A-Z ?

Also, can someone give me some guidance on where I can find a useful bunch of command line tools to troubleshoot DFS and DFS-R replication issues.

Thanks

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

$

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

Cluster File

Hello,

Im new in working with file clusters...

What is the difference between a share folder created in the cluster manager and File Share Resource.

File share resource: File server (role) -> Right click -> Add Resource -> More Resources -> File Share

File Share: Add file share -> SMB Share -> Create share

Both a clustered.

Access to Samba\vfiler share via shortname

$
0
0

I wasn't sure which section to post this under as it occurs on different
operating Systems (Windows XP SP3, WIndows 7, Windows 8, Server 2003, Server
2008) and is random.

Basically, some of our end users experience problems accessing shares to a
vfiler for example with shortname \\example\share.

They can access this specific share via ip address or fqdn \\example.domain.local\share. The
user can even access \\example and be
able to
view shares there but when clicking on the share it comes back with network
error or access denied.

This does not happen to all users at a time and on the same
workstations\servers and there are no specific times. On the end users
workstation DNS and wins is working, they have
no problems accessing other
vfilers or F&P Windows shares.

I tried all flushing DNS and wins cache, tried rebuilding CSC (Offline files)
to no avail. We don't have this enabled in our environment in any case
but
gave it a try.

One way I got it working via shortname is by adding a new security group to
the security permissions on the share.  The group only had my account as a
member
and exsiting groups remained. After this the end user was able to map
via shortname.

I've tried many things and just can't figure this out or where to look. My
team doesn't manage the vfilers or samba shares so
can't look at the logs or
anything.

Another scenarion I have is for a Samba share, very similar situation but
this time its accessing the share on a Windows 2008 R2 server.
Basically
similar symptoms, can't access via shortname, get 'Network Error', tried several
things, even Windows Network Diagnostic
where it states that "The remote
device or resource won't accept the connection', "The device or resource (samba)
is not setup to accept connection
on port "The File and printer sharing
(SMB)". Port 139 is open, can access other shares on different storage devices
successfully.

What's weird is that after some time, An hour, 2 or 3 later functionality
returns without any changes. Obviously restarting the server resolved this
quicker.
There are no scheduled tasks or tasks running in the background,
Windows firewall is disabled, disabled AV etc.

I managed to get a log  from this Samba device but not sure if its
related or not.

[root@samba] [09:30:52]  /var/log/samba
# tail /var/adm/messages
Apr
3 08:33:06 samba adbindd[24524]: [ID 323999 auth.error] ERROR samba.adbindd2
Task exit with cims error: Error sending response: Broken pipe
Apr  3
09:10:07 samba adbindd[24524]: [ID 323999 auth.error] ERROR samba.adbindd2 Task
exit with cims error: Error sending response: Broken pipe

Only other thing I can think of is that is may have something to do with the
device, folder redirection, cache or something of that sort.

I'm stuck, anyone have any ideas. I would like to know what else to try if
the issue re-coccurs.

Hi Folks,

Having the following error when trying to create my first replication group in our domain.

Update folder security. Error - FS-02 (Subjects): Security cannot be set on the replicated folder. The administrative shared folder does not exist.

We have two server 2012 R2 VM's.  One has been in production for a while, the other is brand new.  Each one has dfs replication installed.  The disks administrative shares are accessible from each server to the other via \\fs-02\f$ and \\fs-03\f$

Permissions appear to be identical on each share on each server.

Any sugestions on where to focus my efforts?

Shared folder allowing two different versions of the exact same file

Greetings,

I have a very strange issue that has recently developed.  We had recently instituted folder redirection to a share on a server for Documents.  Everything with the redirection worked as planned.  I had an odd issue come up today where a user was working on two different computers and modified a file in their Documents folder on one computer.  When the user went to the other computer, the changes they had made to the file were not there.  The user went back to the original computer and could see the changes.

I checked the Document path and both computers were pointed to the same exact folder.  The file name was exactly the same as well.  The only difference was that the file size and modified date were different on both computers.  I have never seen this before and am kind of perplexed as to how it happened.  If anyone could provide some insight, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeremy

DFS Namespace and Replication

$

Hi All,

I have a folder, lets call it "Folder1".

"Folder 1" is a group folder at a branch office for employees of a department. They can create additional folders/ files under "Folder 1" as they need.

I have set replication of "Folder 1" back to our main file server at HQ. (for backup purposes). I now would like to create a namespace for "Folder 1" for redundancy. I would like the path to be \\domain\Folder 1

However, I am unable to create the namespace as \\domain\Folder 1 it always goes to \\domain\Folder 1\Folder 1

The file structure is

E:\

   Data

        Folder 1 (Dept 1)

        Folder 2 (Dept 2)

        Folder 3 (Dept 3)

There are also other directories under Data which do not need a namespace or replication. How can I accomplish just getting \\domain\Folder 1

Thanks!!!

Remove PhysicalDisk from Storage Pool without replacement?

$

Currently I'm testing the Advantages and Disadvantages of Storage Pools in my Home-Environment. The test server looks like this:

Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter ("Student-Edition")
2*400 GB HDD
4*1000 GB HDD
2*3000 GB HDD

First, I wanted to test a "replacement" Case: I created a storage Pool of 2*1 + 2*3 added some data to a (mirrored) virtual hard disk, and disconnected one 1 TB drive. The Pool gets reported as unhealty, and with a second Disk i was able to do the regular replacement (Attach new Physical Disk, Remove old & Rebuild)

Now I wanted to test the case, how I can rebuild full functionality, when no proper replacement-disk is available:

Therefore I created another Pool of some Harddisks, added some data (arround 200 GB), disconnected one drive and tried various ways to get back to health - nothing worked:

Using the UI it's impossible to do anything at all. After selecting "remove" on the disconnected drive, it simple keeps telling me, that there is no proper replacement disk found.

Then I followed some instructions i found elsewhere on technet:

1. mark the missing disks as "retired":
 Set-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName <PhysicalDiskxxx> -Usage Retired

2. rebuild each of your virtual disks:

Repair-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName <Virtual Diskxxx>

3. Once everything is finished, try to remove the disk from the pool again:

 Remove-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName <PhysicalDiskxxx>

1+2 worked fine, and I noted the disconnected disks usage dropping from ~ 30GB to 256MB

All virtual Disks reporting a "health" state now.

However, it was not possible to remove the disk: The ui told me, that it's gonna rebuild after clicking "remove" - but simply nothing happened - not after several hours (virtual Drives are "thin", so not much data to move).

Using the Powershell it keeps telling me, that theres an Issue with the "FriendlyName" Property:

I noted, that the Disk was prior shown as "PhysicalDisk-14" - but that did not change anyting.

So I followed another approach, using the following command:

It looked promising, but finally failed with "Not enough available capacity" - which is ofc. not true. (Only assigned around 1000 GB to the virtual disks, of which I used around 200)

So, the question is: How do i remove a (disconnected, retired) disk from a storage pool that has enough capacity left WITHOUT replacing the Disk immediately?

Cannot select parity in new disk when choosing tiered storage

$

Hello

I am running a small lab experiment. I want to add 3 HDD and 1 SSD to a pool and create a tiered parity vDisk. But I cannot do this, the option is just not there. I figured it was because of only 1 SSD, so I added another, option still not there. So I added a 3. The parity option is still not there. I'm running this experiment in a virtual environment in hyper-v and the disk are added thru hyper-v. But I have set the disks up correctly like this:

Get-StoragePool
SATA_Pool | Get-PhysicalDisk | ? FriendlyName -eq "PhysicalDisk4" |
Set-PhysicalDisk -Mediatype SSD
Get-StoragePool
SATA_Pool | Get-PhysicalDisk | ? FriendlyName -eq "PhysicalDisk1" |
Set-PhysicalDisk -Mediatype HDD Get-StoragePool SATA_Pool | Get-PhysicalDisk |
? FriendlyName -eq "PhysicalDisk2" | Set-PhysicalDisk -Mediatype HDD
Get-StoragePool SATA_Pool | Get-PhysicalDisk | ? FriendlyName -eq"PhysicalDisk3" | Set-PhysicalDisk -Mediatype HDD

Is this a bug or what is the requirement to get this working?

Thanks

Namespace Errors System Error 1355 - Specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted

$

Ok, lets start with my environment:

dc1 - windows server 2003 r2

dc2 - windows server 2012 r2

fs1- windows server 2003 r2

fs2 - windows server 2012 r2

Namespace - \\<fqdn>\data  (the fqdn would be like contoso.microsoft.com)

I am in the process of migrating everything from server1 to server2 (dc and fs listed above).  I am done with mostly everything except DFS.  I have migrated the data, setup permissions, shares, etc. and replicated the data between fs1 and fs2. I have verified that all data is currently replicated and up to date, so no backlogs.  I am trying to add dc2 and fs2 as namespace servers.  This is so that I can point all of the referrals to FS2 that way when I remove FS1 no one gets an error about not being able to find the files.  The problem is that from all 4 servers, I receive an error message when loading the namespace via DFS Management tool.  I then thought because of the drastic differences between the versions, the next best thing would be to export the namespace and then import it into the new server, but even attempting the export command (dfsutil) gives me the same error.  My suspect is that the original namespace server was removed sometime ago without the previous IT person properly migrating everything (but I am at a loss cuz here I am).  I then thought if I go through ADSIedit, I can change the namespace server to the new one for all of my shares, and then possibly be able to load the namespace within the MMC tool (again just a guess); however, I cannot find anything listed for namespace or remoteservers under the properties of the share.

Note:  the namespace does work when I navigate to it from a PC.  \\contoso.microsoft.com\data does bring up folders and files.  (changed the name for obvious reasons)

At this point, I just want to have my new namespace server, so that I can change the referrals, and decommission my other servers.  (And yes there are many other steps I need to perform for the decommissioning, but that's not the point of this).  I have read numerous articles on this and haven't found a way to accomplish what I want.  Even though I walked through the steps listed for those issues and unfortunately they either did not apply or did not work.  I prefer to not use ADSIedit if at all possible, simply because it's not the "clean" way of doing things, but if I have no other option then I have no other option.

Edit 1:  In event viewer on dc1, under File Replication Service on the left hand side, I see the following error appear numerous times (not every day, but still a lot).  I have not performed any of the steps listed simply because I do not know if this pertains to my problem and I don't want to start troubleshooting a server I plan on decommissioning unless I need to (say for the above issue):

Event ID:  13568

Source: NtFrs

Description:

The File Replication Service has detected that the replica set "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)" is in JRNL_WRAP_ERROR.

Replica set name is    : "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)"
Replica root path is   : "c:\windows\sysvol\domain"
Replica root volume is : "\\.\C:"
A Replica set hits JRNL_WRAP_ERROR when the record that it is trying to read from the NTFS USN journal is not found.  This can occur because of one of the following reasons.

[1] Volume "\\.\C:" has been formatted.
[2] The NTFS USN journal on volume "\\.\C:" has been deleted.
[3] The NTFS USN journal on volume "\\.\C:" has been truncated. Chkdsk can truncate the journal if it finds corrupt entries at the end of the journal.
[4] File Replication Service was not running on this computer for a long time.
[5] File Replication Service could not keep up with the rate of Disk IO activity on "\\.\C:".
Setting the "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore" registry parameter to 1 will cause the following recovery steps to be taken to automatically recover from this error state.
[1] At the first poll, which will occur in 5 minutes, this computer will be deleted from the replica set. If you do not want to wait 5 minutes, then run "net stop ntfrs" followed by "net start ntfrs" to restart the File Replication Service.
[2] At the poll following the deletion this computer will be re-added to the replica set. The re-addition will trigger a full tree sync for the replica set.

WARNING: During the recovery process data in the replica tree may be unavailable. You should reset the registry parameter described above to 0 to prevent automatic recovery from making the data unexpectedly unavailable if this error condition occurs again.

To change this registry parameter, run regedit.

Click on Start, Run and type regedit.

Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click down the key path:
   "System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters"
Double click on the value name
   "Enable Journal Wrap Automatic Restore"
and update the value.

If the value name is not present you may add it with the New->DWORD Value function under the Edit Menu item. Type the value name exactly as shown above.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Edit 2: I have verified that firewalls are off and I can communicate to all 4 servers from each other.

Edit 3:  Attempted to try and fix error reported in 'Edit 1'; however the registry key mentioned does not exist (looked at all 4 servers to verify).
