Network Drive Mapping for users who have Port 445 (possibly others) Blocked by their ISP to a Server 2008 system

Nice to see my original posts are still up.  I was hoping that in the ensuing time someone had found a solution.  At least I can now see many other posting the same problems.  :)  Thought I was losing it for a while.

We have 100% proven that the problem (in our case) is from the ISP blocking port 445 (possibly others but 445 for SURE) with the reasoning that it prevents the spread of some Internet "worms".  It also just happens to prevent people who work from home from being able to map to their network drives at work.

What I was hoping was that eventually someone would comer up with a solution for this short of having to load a server using a different OS from Windows.  The SMB protocol is the one needing port 445 as far as I can tell.  Not all ISP block port 445 and the laptops that use those ISP's  have no problem.  Unless they travel.  Then it is "hit or miss" as to whether the ISP for the Hotel they stay at blocks it.

I have run multiple tests to prove that this was in FACT the problem.  Even the particular ISP in question which is a very large national ISP company freely admits they do this supposedly to prevent the spread of an unnamed Internet Worm.  It also happens to prevent Business use of their Internet by Home Subscribers at they cannot map to their Business Servers which also need port 445 to map.

I have used WebDAV successfully to get around this but at a huge loss of speed and performance.  Cloud services all do essentially the same thing and all have pretty much the same loss of speed.

If anyone has come across a method of allowing a drive mapping to be rerouted to any other port, that is the only hope I have short of changing to an alternate OS for the Office Server and even then I cant be sure until I try if it would help.  I read somewhere about the possibility of routing through a proxy but again, the problem would still be that the requests for mapping are expected on port 445 on the server and they will not get through even to the proxy since the originating ISP is the one blocking the port from the User's system.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated  I have posted this question now for several years with no one yet providing a working solution.  Hope burns Eternal though :)

Server question

I'm basically very new to this & even think I'm posting this under the wrong section.. So lately with school I did that one thing called peer to peer networking, it looks quite interesting..

My laptop HDD died & I will be buying a SSD, but I'm someone that needs space.. I have a working computer (Windows vista) that I don't really use & it has 900GB free space. Is there a chance I use it as some sort of private cloud, like the dropbox system but so I can only access it through my home? Will it be a peer to peer network, or are there better options for me?

Please if any forum moderator sees this, could you move my topic to the right section? Thanks in advance.

DFS Replication not getting all files

Hi,

I have three DFS servers running W2K R2.  One of the servers started corrupting files and replicating them to the other servers.  I removed the server from DFS and deleted the contents of it's DFS folders.  I restored the files to one of the remainng DFS servers and let it replicate to the other server.  This worked great.  I then added the server that was removed from DFS back as a Member Server and let it replicate.  The health check shows no errors and no backlog but the file and folder count doesn't matched.  The first two DFS servers match but the third I added back in is missing about 11,000 files.  I confirmed that they are not set as temporary files.  If I rename the file on one of the two up-to-date servers the file will replicate to the third server.  How can I force the out-of-date server to get the remaining 11,000 files?

Having to re-enable sharing on 2008R2 server after each reboot.

I have a 2008R2 EE server that has some foder shares located on a drive. We have an application that uses those shares but evertime the server reboots I have to go in and manually re-enable the sharing for the shares to reappear. Has anyone seen this before? Network seems to be good, nothing good in event logs. Need help please! Thanks.

Shared folder allowing two different versions of the exact same file

Greetings,

I have a very strange issue that has recently developed.  We had recently instituted folder redirection to a share on a server for Documents.  Everything with the redirection worked as planned.  I had an odd issue come up today where a user was working on two different computers and modified a file in their Documents folder on one computer.  When the user went to the other computer, the changes they had made to the file were not there.  The user went back to the original computer and could see the changes.

I checked the Document path and both computers were pointed to the same exact folder.  The file name was exactly the same as well.  The only difference was that the file size and modified date were different on both computers.  I have never seen this before and am kind of perplexed as to how it happened.  If anyone could provide some insight, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Windows Server 2012R2 Work folders - why are users suspended

$

I can't seem to enable my users that I have assigned to work folders in Windows Server 2012R2. Every time I create a new work folder and add a user they are suspended by default. When I try to right click and resume user it says can't enable a user in a suspended group. The user is enabled in AD so no issues there, how do I get the user enabled and what do I need to look at in AD for this?

Thanks,

Jake

Can APIPA supports File Sharing?

I know that when my DHCP server goes down, all the DHCP clients will have APIPA address with IP range of 169.254.x.x.

My doubt is, after all the clients are assigned to APIPA address, can all the clients can do file sharing among them?. What are all the services that will work and don't work on APIPA?

Automatically rename files in a folder weekly?

$

I have a folder of jpeg images. I'm creating a GPO to apply a file in that folder named wallpaper as the default background for all users. Once a week, I'd like that wallpaper file to be renamed wallpaper1 and for a file named wallpaper2 to be renamed to wallpaper. That way their background automatically changes every week.

Is it possible to automate this with a batch file, vbs file, GPO or 3rd party program?

DFS hiding replicated folder

I enabled hidden system files, and they appeared. Seems like DFS marks them with this attribute to prevent accidental deletion? I did run the following commandattrib -r -h -s [path to the folder] to no avail.

I have 2 servers replicating to each other. With all of the data residing on Server1, which replicates to Server2. Server1 is Server 2008; Server2 is Server 2008 R2.

Thanks in advance!

Office files being saved to network share without owner

$

I upgraded to Server 2012 R2 (from 2008 R2) and upgraded to Office 2013 (from Office 2010).  Since the upgrade, Office files saved to Network DFS shares are being saved without an owner.  The files are on the shares but cannot be accessed and are not listed when viewed via the share.  The files are be viewed directly on the file server.  To gain access the ownership must be changed.

This does not happen when folders or files are created from other applications.  Folders can be created from clients via the share.  Files can be created from the clients using Notepad and WordPad.  Office documents can be copied to the share from the clients local drive, but if these files are accessed and changed using either Office 2010 or Office 2013 and saved back to the share they are saved without an owner.

The Share Permissions are Authenticated Users has Full Control.

The NTFS Permissions on a typical folder is:

The Administrators and SYSTEM group has Full Control to This folder, subfolders and files.

The CREATOR OWNER group has Full Control to Subfolders and files.

The Authenticated Users group has Modify to This folder, and subfolders and files.

Once ownership is taken the files has the Permissions inherited from the folder.

Before the upgrade this was not an issue.  The domain was upgrade doing a clean install of all servers and clients and a fresh install of the applications.  The only thing rolled from the old environment to the new was the data.

I also posted this issue to the office forum.

Thanks you for any help you can provide.

Re-Organizing Network Drive Folders: confused on how to retain permissions

$

We are reorganizing our network drive into 5 new folders. I need to lock down the 5 folders to only let uses have "read" permission to the top level folder and they need to keep their current folder permissions. I can use Robocopy to copy the data and ICACLS if need be, but I suspect there is an easier way as just moving the data through Explorer is quick but permissions aren't working out well.

Currently:

\\server\common is where everything is stored (about 500 GB and 100 folders)

Moving to:

\\server\common\folder1  folder2 folder3 etc.

I need to give the users only READ permission on the new folder1 folder2 and they can retain the current permissions that they have the folders.

Windows 2k8 R2, NTFS only set, everything is on the same drive.

And any suggestions on how to best fix broken links with Excel on files that get moved? I see the app LinkFixer.

This could be a big mess. Any suggestions are appreciated.

FRSM - Expiration Question

Hi,

I was just looking into the FRSM file expiration task, and was wondering is it possible to expire old files and move them to a different drive but retain the file structure?

Or does this task just dump them in the specified directory?

Thanks

Intermittant disconnection of Shared Drives on Windows 7 Client machines hosted in WIndows Server 2008 Standard Edition

$

The environment - Windows Server 2008 Standard/Windows 7 32 bit Client machine.

Share - It is not a DFS share.

Antivirus - McAfee

The issue - 1 user is unable to connect to a particular shared drive hosted from within the Windows Server 2008 Standard file server.  This drive is one of the multiple drives which are supposed to be connected to the user machine during logon using the logon script.  All the other drives mentioned in the logon script gets mapped fine but one particular drive does not.  The user uses a laptop and we have checked his connections while in LAN, Wireless, VPN.  Everything seems to be working fine apart from this one shared drive.  Rest of the users within that office gets the drive fine but just not this one user.  Since we are not domain admins so we do not have a visibility of the group policies linked to this particular drive and hence RSOP as well does not help.  We have not seen the user getting logged into the machine using a TEMP profile as well for us to ascertain that the issue may be with a TEMP profile logon.

Please note that the drive does get connected at times and at times the connection just drops off!  As an interim measure the local IT has created a batch file and given it to the user which maps the drive for the user.

Any help in resolving this long impending issue would be much appreciated!

Added test namespace server on 2k8R2 to live namespace on 2k3 and then disabled. now can't re-enable.

In the process of migrating our file server from 2003 to 2008r2 I added the 2008r2 server as a namespace server to our main dfs namespace. After testing I disabled the 2008r2 on the namespace until time for the migration. After the migration, when I went to re-enable the 2008r2 server I get "Properties cannot be set on the namespace server. The request is not supported. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

RecycleBin is empty yet drive still shows storage in use

$

On a Windows 2008 R2 EE server, I have a G drive, and it had an Exchange 2010 database on it. I removed the DB from Exchange, and I proceeded to remove the DB and other files from the G drive.

I answered yes to permanently deleting the DB file since it is too big to recover.

After emptying the RecycleBin, I noticed that the G drive still had 20GB in use.  I don't see anything.

When I looked at the Shadow Copy tab, I see 20GB in use, but I don't have Shadow Copy enabled.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Ron
