Folders in DFS Namespace Not Seen

$

Good day,

I have 4 File servers running DFS, 3 of the sites are running Server 2012 and 1 site is running Server 2008 R2. I have a Shared folder configured that must be seen by all 4 sites and I have configured a Namespace for the folder to be accessed. I created a Namespace and under the Namespace a folder for the shared folder. The issue I am having is that random users cannot see a folder or multiple folder in the share. They open the location using a mapped drive and open the Shared folder and they only see 2 folders but there are actually 10 folders. When I use the server name and browse to the share they can see the folders. What could be causing this?

One of my shared drive not accessible within same domain and giving below error message
You do not have permission to access \\foldershare\XYZ. Contact your network administrator to request access.

Also, on the same server another shared folder on different drive is accessible. Permissions on both are same.

Unstable DFS-R with Event 5002, Error ID 9032

Hello, I'm in the progress of initial replication of the relatively large (~500Gb) folder.

Two physical machines: Server 2012 (main office) and freshly installed Server 2012R2 (branch office). Both systems are updated and no any third tool installed (as antivirus, backup etc.). They are connected via hardware VPN transparently for the Windows servers. Replication is set for full throttle on the night (10Mbs) and limited by 1Mbs for the day.

The problem is that at the night replication stops with Error 5002, ID 9032 (connection is shutting down) that appears in themain office. No errors in the branch office. The problem occurs after 2-4 hours working with no bandwidth limitation. Restarting DFS-R service  in thebranch office at the morning solves the problem for the next day. No problem seems to occur at the daytime  while bandwidth is limited. In terms of volume, it makes approx. 10Gb until fail at night and another 10Gb during the daytime.

Please help.

Nick.

DFS-R which is primary?

I have a replication group that has been configured and running fine for a couple years now.  Server 2008 R2 file servers, Server 2012 DCs.

In DFS we have many folder with 2 folder targets configured for each of these.  One of the targets is on our production side, the other target is on a server at our DR site.

The folder target on the production side server is enabled, the folder target on the DR side server is disabled.  So users always get their files from that one server.

Last week a user told me that they deleted a file and within a couple seconds it reappeared.  I checked the DFS paths that she uses to confirm she was accessing the correct file server.  The server with the folder target that is enabled in DFS. She was.  I attempted to recreate the problem but could not.  The deleted file would not reappear for me.

Today she called me again.  I could recreate it this time.  I deleted the file, on the production side, and it almost immediately reappeared.

So I ran this command on both servers:

Dfsradmin Membership List /RGName:"GroupName" /attr:MemName,RFName,IsPrimary,objstate

It reports "No" in the IsPrimary column for both servers.

What's going on here?  How could this happen if the user always access their files from the Folder Target that is enabled?  This must have something to do with which replication partner is the primary.  How can I determine that?

Storage Tier Optimization - On host or VM?

$

I've set up a tiered storage space on the machine running hyper-V (Physical disks are connected to the host)

There, I created Virtual Disks and assigned them to various VMs.

Where do I Need to run the "Storage Tier Optimization" now? On the host itself or on each VM?

- The VMs are not Aware, that their disks are actually tiered storage, so it seems wrong to run the Optimization on the VMs.
- The host is not Aware of any data located on the disks, as they are "offline" and connected to the VMs. (So, I cannot use any command arround Storage Spaces requiring a "drive letter"?

For example the command

Get-FileStorageTier -VolumeDriveLetter X | FT -AutoSize

always Shows "no result" on the VMs - on the host it cannot be run since there is no drive letter.

Any ideas?

Best,
dognose

--- edit

If I try to generate a storage tier report using

defrag /c /h /g /# >> c:\StorageTiersOutput.txt

I get an empty file on the VM.
If I run this on the host, I only get a report for the single disk that is directly mounted on the host. Every disk that is offline (on the host) and mounted to another vm is "inaccessible"?!

How is this supposed to work? I want to have arround 10 VMs benefiting from the tiered storage - So, do I Need to buy 60 SSDs, assigning 6 to each VM in order to be able to create the pools on the VM rather than on the host, in order to be able to run the daily optimization?

Work folders (0x80070005) Access is denied

Hi, we have a fairly new work folders deployment and I have a couple of users who are suddenly getting the following error:

Sync failed. Work Folders path: c:\users\"username"\work folders Folders; Error: (0x80070005) Access is denied

I have checked permissions on the local work folders folder but the same error occurs on every PC the user logs onto which make me think it might be server end. I've checked the user has full control and is the owner of the directory. One of the users had his account re created recently so I deleted his work folder, started again and get the exact same error. I've checked the SyncShare event logs on the server and can't see any reason for it, the error is on the client

Scratching my head on this one any ideas?!

vss - how do you continue a snapshot backup error?

Windows Server 2008 R2

i'm using NetBackup 7.6.0.3 to backup some files located in a Windows Serve 2008 R2 server. the files are just .TXT  files but they are being added, modified, deleted during the time of backup. my problem comes, i think, when vss created a snapshot of files to backup and then said file/s were deleted resulting in a "file not found" error in NetBackup. hence backup aborted.

the difficulty comes who and how this kind of problem be handled. as i cannot shutdown the service just to have a backup, my thinking is shouldn't vss be able to handle open file issues?

Migration FRS to DFSR (SYSVOL)

Started the migration from FRS to DFS-R a few months ago, stage 2 has been running fine now for 2,5 months so the final step is stage 3.

Ran the DFS-R diagnostic reports (Health and propagation) and no errors were reported, results below. Also checked the eventlogs (DFS Replication), no errors.

Are there any others things I can check before proceeding to step 3 as this is the point of no return?

Environment:
3x 2008R2 DCs
8x 2008R2 RODCs

Output dfsrmig /GetMigrationState

All Domain Controllers have migrated successfully to Global state ('Redirected')

Migration has reached a consistent state on all Domain Controllers.

Succeeded.

I go to school online, and since I have went back due to not liking 10 it says "The parameter is incorrect" when I click my VitalSource Bookshelf Online to see the books I have purchased through school.  I would appreciate help in fixing this, because I purchased these from school loans, and now have no access to them.

Thanks so much!

Error when creating new share in Clustered File Server - The resources must be online on the same node for this operation

$

I'm trying to create a new share on a Windows 2012 R2 failover cluster but no matter what  I try (Add File Share in Failover Cluster Manager, new share in fsmgmt.msc managing the cluster NetBIOS name and FQDN) I always receive the error "The resources must be online on the same node for this operation".

The setup:

Two Windows 2012 R2 nodes making a failover cluster, using a Dell PowerVault MD3220 shared storage. The File Server role a has dedicated LUN which appears as the S drive on both nodes (though it is only ever online on the active node). The share I'm trying to create is to a folder that exists on the S drive.

The File Server role has the following resources, according to Failover Cluster Manager. All are shown as online.

  • Server Name: CFS1 (with its associated client access point IP)
  • File Server: \\CFS1
  • Storage: The dedicated LUN

The weird thing is, the File Server role is already running several shares that were created when the cluster was first built - all on the same S drive. All of the shares are members of a domain DFS (not sure if that's relevant)

The structure on disk is

S:

| - DfsShares

    | - Folder1

    | - Folder2

    | - and so on...

Folder1 is already shared in the cluster, but Folder2 is causing the error (actually, to be accurate, there are 10 folders already shared and two are causing the error)

Any ideas what resources it thinks aren't online - or where to look for more information?

Moving DfsrPrivate folder / changing location

Hello

I need to change the location where DfsrPrivate is stored for a repliation group. We have a Unix based system which provides external VPN access to files through a web site, however the DfsrPrivate folder is visible for users which cause confusion, so I have been tasked to move it. You can run from Unix, but you cannot hide apparently :)

I realize you can change the staging folder in replication membership settings, but the ConflictAndDeleted location is greyed out and not changeable. Is there a prefered/supported method to do this and how exactly do you do it?

If it's impossible I guess I'll have to delete the member (or the entire replication group?) from DFS management and reconfigure it? I don't think I need any of the data from the DfsrPrivate folders.

Does formatting an iSCSI volume affect data already on a NAS?

$

We have an 8tb Seagate Blackarmor NAS currently being connected to via standard file sharing, but we have a new server and I am trying to connect the NAS up via iSCSI within Windows 2012 so that we can back it up to Azure (which only works with local drives).

After much reading we have worked out how to set it all up, but have stopped short of the final step of formatting the new volume within Windows, as we're worried it will wipe data which is already on the NAS.  We don't have anywhere big enough to move all the data to whilst we try either!

So the question is - if we set up a new iSCSI target, mount it and format it within Windows, will that wipe the NAS and all the data already on it, or is it just creating a "virtual" volume on the NAS?

Apologies if my terminology isn't great on this, I'm a programmer rather than a server bod!

TIA

WorkFolders Windows 10

Hello,

I´m currently testing out WorkFolders for Windows 10(Official release) but I´m unable to get this working.
There is no problem with Windows 8.1

Error message: (Sync Stopped. Can´t encrypt files) To continue synchronising, close any open Files or application...

Work Folders detected a sync error. Check partnership status, network connectivity, and disk space. EventID 9002

Sync failed. Work Folders path: C:\Users\MYUSER\Work Folders; Error: (0x80c80314) The Work Folders path has to be encrypted. You might have an application holding the Work Folders folder open or the folder might be compressed. Close File Explorer and any open files or apps, and check the folder's Advanced properties to ensure that the folder is not compressed. EventID 2100

Client is running with Windows Defender(SCEP) and I cant see any application that would cause this issue.

How can I pinpoint this problem and is there someone that have had the same issue?

Without installing Desktop experience is there a way to clean up WinSXS on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Server?  I have tried the Windows Server 2008 R2 method of copying cleanmgr.exe and cleanmgr.mui from WinSXS, but it doesn't appear to work for windows server 2012 R2.  When I tried it I get an error about not able to run a 16 bit application.

thanks.

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

$

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

Disconnect iSCSI Target to Re-connect after additional NIC on Storage VLAN

$

I currently have a file server with an iSCSI target and LAN connection on the same single NIC. This evening I will be doing maintenance on the server to remove the iSCSI from the LAN nic and adding 2 NIC's on the storage VLAN with MPIO. The single NIC has become a huge bottle neck in the past 2 weeks due to application changes.

I'm planning to offline the volume from Disk Management, then disconnect in iSCSI initiator. Configuring the 2 storage NIC's with IP's on the storage VLAN, enabling MPIO which will require a reboot. Once the server is back online I will configure MPIO for the previously mapped LUN and should have the ability to online the volume?

Am I missing anything? After configuring MPIO and verifying connection to the LUN I shouldn't have to do anything to get the volume back on to the same drive letter it was previously, correct? Thanks for any insight if I've missed anything.
