Communication failure to local file server when MPLS down!

$
0
0

Imagine the following scenario:

The HQ has two domain controllers:
SRV-DC-01 (DNS, AD DS)
SRV-DC-02 (DNS, AD DS)

Remote offices do not have domain controllers, only a file server.
SRV-FS-01 (DNS, File Share)

The problem is that when communication fails (ISP-MPLS) between the remote office and the HQ, workstations lose communication with domain controllers and all stations also lose access to the local file server! As it is
possible? The server is local, it is connected and all stations can ping it (per name and per ip address). Does anyone have any idea what can be?

FSRM from Win10 to Win2K8R2 shows Invalid Namespace when editing File Screen

Hello,

As stated in title, I'm running FSRM on a Windows 10 box connecting to a Windows Server 2008R2 box. I can browse each section fine but if I try to open/edit a File Screen Template, I see the following error message:

Invalid namespace. Details: Invalid namespace.

I can successfully connect to and view everything from a Windows 7 box though. Could it just be an incompatibility between these operating systems? (I'm guessing if the server was 2012 and up this wouldn't be an issue).

DFS-R stopping every night

I have been struggling with issues related to DFS-R for a couple of weeks. First, the servers were experiencing pro-longed periods high memory pages/sec. The BPA indicated that the staging space was too small, so I increased the limits for some but then needed additional disk space. I added more storage and split the staging space between the two disks. I also disabled RDC on some of the volumes based on a TechNet performance tuning document.

The two servers replicate bi-directionally, full mesh with two members. On the 28th between 12 AM and 1 AM, the replication from member A to member B stopped. Member B continued to replicate to A successfully. This affected all shares being replicated from Member A. The issue was discovered on 11/09.

Restarting the DFSR service resumes replication. Everything works until sometime between 12-1 AM then it stops replicating again. In the event logs (app, sys, dfsr) there are no errors indicating a problem. If I run the diagnostic report while it's not replicating, it finds no problems, not even backlogged files. It appears that DFSR just quits monitoring file changes.

The only that seems to run every morning during this time frame is the DFSR Defrag which reports successful completion in less than 2 minutes. Eventid's 700,701. Between 10/28 and 11/09, DFSR Defrag never ran.

Memory utilization is below 50%, processor queue length below 3, disk queue length on all volumes peaks at 1.5.

Any thoughts on why it might be failing?

What is the syntax to do "incremental restore" on a new file server by using robocopy

$

Hi everyone, hope you can help...

I just setup a new file server running Windows 2012 but not in production yet. I have already backup the data from the old file server running win2k3 and restore a full back up on the new server. Now I would like to run a robocopy command so that the files on the new server will have the same version of the files with the old server. In order words, I like to run a incremental restore on the new file server. The reason I use robocopy because I had a problem with the incremental restore by using __rita_ Backu_Ex_.

May you tell me what the syntax should be? I want to be logged (telling which files fail or succeed copied), should not remove any files unless the files on the old server were deleted on purpose. If there is an error...I want it to force it or keep running without being terminated.

Besides, the directories I tried to "copy" on the network shares.... does it mean I need to run the command one by one by different network share names?

Thank you very much for your help in advance.

Unable to rename files or folders in a particular folder.

I have one particular location running Windows 2008R2 on Vmware where a particular share is not allowing users to rename files or directories within this share.

Attempting to rename a file from a dos prompt gives the error message "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Attempting to rename in explorer gives "The action can't be completed because the file is open in another program"

The file or directory is not in use and is confirmed by running handles filename and no results are found.

I can create new files or folders, delete files or folders, edit  and save the newly created file (within notepad), just not rename it.

If I go up a directory or down a directory, I can add, delete, edit AND rename the file so it's got to be something funky with the permissions. All the permissions are set to  various users and groups as Full Control for This folder, subfolder and files.

No Deny access has been granted.

I cannot move a file into this directory either.

Running procmon shows the following capture as I tr to rename e:\shares\buyer\a.txt  to b.txt

If I reboot the server, the problem goes away....for a couple of days.

AV has been disabled

Any ideas?

Work Folders on Folder Redirection Share

$

Hi,

My goal is to use an internal file server as the home folder for on-premise users as a folder redirection share.

the same share I want to make available as a Work Folder for home users who want to connect to their personal folders from home.

I feel like I'm missing something but how do I perform this?

I know I can use the work folders both for on-premise and for cloud users but then what do I set in the Folder Redirection policies? work folders only don't create a share, but only an https access...

thanks

Hello,

We want allow a specific User Group to create Shares. We are able to allow them create folders, but i am unable to find a solution to let them create shares. I also do not find a matching option in Delegate Control is AD 2008 R2

I already search on the internet, but didn't find a possible solution for this.

We dont want to make the user Power User or Admin User.

The moment i click on the 'Advanced Sharing' button, i have to enter administrator credentials

Maybe somebody know how to solve this?

Thank you in advance.

Search Files over WAN links

Hello, I have a windows Server 2012 R2 with File Services. I installed the "Windows Search Service" Feature and added the shared drives to be indexed. Searching from a computer in the same subnet is fast, 1,2 mins.  Searching from a WAN link is very slow.  Like 25 minutes same search as previous and sometimes didnt return results.

Is there a way to improove this?  What is the Bandwidth requirements for Windows Search to work over slow links?

Thanks!!

Work Folder Sync

Hello everyone,

since 4 days our WorkFolder Server stopped syncing.
Actually it shows the following error (for each user):
The Windows Sync Share service failed to setup a new sync partnership with a device. Database: \\?\D:\SyncShareState\User\Metadata; User folder name: \\?\D:\User\user@domain; Error code: (0x80041295)

Does anyone have an idea on that one?

Restarted the server and installed all available updates, but nothing helped so far.

Best Regards,
Jens

Multipath I/O does not work for HP MSL6480 tape library

Hello everyone. There is a HP MSL6480 Fibre Channel tape library connected to SAN switch. Also there is an HP server with Windows Server 2012R2 connected to SAN switch by two host bus adapters. I've enabled MPIO feature in Windows Server, but tape drives and changer are duplicated in device manager, and backup soft also sees them duplicated. Is there any solution to fix this behavior? HP support says Windows MPIO is a problem. Thanks.

Copy Virtual Domain Controller to new ESXi Host

$

Hi,

I know that when P2V'ing a domain controller it's necessary to demote, P2V, then promote the machine to avoid complications with Active Directory.  Are the same guidelines applicable when copying an existing VM which is a domain controller from one ESXi host to another?  I cannot find any documents from Microsoft or VMware which mention this so I believe it should be OK but has anyone actually done it?  Thanks in advance.

Robert

Adding new server to DFS -Copy Data?

$

I have 2 (2003R2 + 2012R2) servers in DFS. I am adding a new one (2012R2)later this week.

My question is: Should I first xcopy all of the data over to the new server, and then pull that server into the DFS and namespace? Or just create the DFS on that server and let it take care of replicating all of the data over.

Keep in mind that some of the shared folders are quite large <100GB

Searching for Tags on Server File Service

$

Good Morning,

I have a user who wants to be able to search for documents and spreadsheets existing on our file share server using the "Details" section, e.g.: Title, Subject, Tags, Categories, and Comments.  I've installed Windows Search, have Indexed the folder, and ensured that system has read-write permissions to it, but when I try to search using a few test terms, nothing ever comes up (tag-wise only, search terms either presiding in  the document or title works).  Index troubleshoot search and indexing turns up no errors, although I've re-indexed the folder a few times already.  When I pull that test file off the server and onto my desktop, the terms pop right up in a search.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's even a capability to search a shared file store on a server using tags, and am hoping that someone here might be able to help.

Thanks!

Storage Space killed my life, cause of an Disk Issue. Need to Recover .vhdx (19 TiB)

Hi,

last night changed I the chassi for my Server. After all I booted him, and he had one SSD with an Error Icon. I Shutdown the Server, and reseatet the SATA Connector. After that, the Storage Space was shown up, but also yellow icon. I had access to the Virtual Disk, but my two Hyper-V Virtual Machines were gone. GONE (!!!). ~ 19 TiB vhdx File was lost. The space was as before marked as used ( 600 GiB free of 19 TiB Volume). So I don't think that the file is lost, I think the index is lost or some thing.

I need direct support. I'll attach the Event log, with starting Point close to the Disk Isse. I set Disk3 (SSD) as Retaind, case Windows says he through IO Error.

What to do ?!
