Troubling issue with application implementing database files by ordinary file sharing from Win Server2012R2 to Clients Win 8.1 (or version higher)

$

0

Environment: Win Server2012R2 sharing files ordinarily; LAN connection wired; Application named Express Accounting (Thai);

If clients are Win XP or Win7, no problems occur.

If clients are Win 8.1 (or higher), application hangs up with many kinds of error messages, for example, "file4readAllLow", "Can't find the files names bra bra bra...", "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly and Windows will close it and notify you if a solution is available (but I've never been notified for once) " .

What we have already tried to fix the problem but no positive results are:

  1. Try disabling SMB2&3 both on Server and Clients to see if newer SMBs are the cause

  2. Try the "always on" power options to see if the sleeping harddisk or netcard are the cause

  3. Try asking the application developer if their application has some sort of discrimination or hatred for new OS (and the programmer still has no idea what's going on under the hood)

  4. Try many things that an ordinary user can do desperately to see if some configuration on any server and client will make miracle ... but none has been found so far

Since recently MS issued the Free upgrade Win7 to Win10Pro which we already tried upgrade a machine to see if the problem still persisted. It did. Sooner or later the upgrade is unevasive. I figured we needed some nerds to help us out with this issues. Please advise. (Excuse me for my poor English.)

fsrm not reporting accurately

We have two Windows 2012 R2 servers that are DFS servers. We use DFS to replicate users documents folder so that it's highly available. We have deduplication enabled on the specific volume. I've installed FSRM and I've run some reporting specifically to find out how much space is used by people storing mp3's and other audio files. I don't think the report is returning accurate information. I've done a search on the drive redirecting output to a text file and there are thousands and thousands of mp3's. When I run the report in fsrm in doesn't return the same amount of data. I calculate there is probably 100GB's of music files on the share and the report only returns 12GB's.  Same with wma files.  I know a specific user has 6GB's of wma files and when I run the report it doesn't return that user as having any of those files. What could be the issue of fsrm not returning accurate information?

Error when running DFS Replication (DFSR) Database Export

Hi guys,

i am following the Microsoft documented process for cloning a DFSR database.  Pretty simple to follow, but I am receiving an error when running the Export-DfsrClone that is required to export the database so that it can be imported into the new member.

The command I run is Export-DfsrClone -Volume D: -Path D:\DfsrCloneBasic -Validation Basic

The error I receive is as follows -

Export-DfsrClone: Could not read the DFSR volume configuration file for preseeding instructions.  Confirm the XML file is present in the following directory: "D:\DfsrCloneBasic\Config.xml"  Could not find file 'D:\DfsrCloneBasic\Config.xml'.

At line:1 char:1

+ Export-DfsrClone -Volume D: -Path D:\DfsrCloneBasic -Validation Basic

+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

+ CategoryInfo : ReadError: (D:\:String) [Export-DfsrClone], DfsrException

+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : Export-DfsrClone.OutputFolderPreseedingInformation.IOException,Microsoft.DistributedFileSystemReplication.Commands.ExprtDfsrCloneCommand

When I then go into D:\DfsrCloneBasic, the folder is empty.  The error is ambiguous and doesn't really give any ideas.  There appear to be no errors in the event logs.

If I run "Export-DfsrClone -Volume D: -Path D:\DfsrCloneBasic -Validation None" then it succeeds and copies folders to the specified path.  But Microsoft recommend running with "Basic" so can someone give any ideas as to what is going on?

Thanks.

Files not being deleted on Windows 2008 share until client restarts.

Windows 2008 environment with domain. All clients are Windows 7. This is a newly configured domain.

On two client computers, files are deleted on the share. Intermittently on a directory refresh some files will reappear. Doing batch file removal ends up with some files being deleted and others withstanding (it isn't certain files, they are random). The files cannot be opened (errors out with access denied). When this happens I can see the files are still listed locally on the server but cannot be accessed there as well. Using Process Explorer I can see there exist system file handlers for the files (attempting to remove the handle errors out with "handle cannot be found").

Users have been granted full NTFS and share permissions.

Interestingly, when the client computer from where the file was deleted is restarted the files will properly be deleted. Ending explorer.exe and restarting it does not accomplish this, the computer has to be restarted. I did not try ending certain services to try and narrow it down.

I've successfully repeated this issue with only one connection to the share and no files being accessed by any other client computers. Nothing is under load, including the OS and the network.

The share was originally on a separate client computer. I transferred the share over to the server in hopes it would fix it; it obviously did not.

The problem is definitely on the client computer but I have not had success in finding anyone else who has had this issue. I've checked system logs but there are no errors to report. It's a new one for me and very frustrating.

Discussion
We have a Windows server 2003 box that recently cannot be backed up by TSM (tivoli storage manager)...I isolated the issue but cannot seem to figure out how to get shadow copies to display correctly in the C drive properties (Shadow Copies tab)...is there any way to rebuild the shadow copies without reinstalling the OS? this server is in a production environment ...I noticed that the service "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" was stopped so I started it and set it to 'Automatic' and just for the record "Volume Shadow Copy" service is started and set to automatic...any info on this would be greatly appreciated...please see screenshot below for the error I am getting....Thanks a million everyone!

Large number of open file handles on fileserver (Server 2012R2) after user's rds session has long been terminated through log off

$

Hi,

we do have an rds farm with roaming profiles (not profile disks) consisting of 6 terminal servers ("srvts001" to "srv006" 2012 R2), 2 domain controllers ("srvdc01", "srvdc02" 2012 R2), 1 SQL/Fileserver ("srvsql01" 2012 R2).

Roaming profiles are stored on srvsql01 in share RDS. Oplocks are disabled, directory caching is disabled.

Everything was running without problems for 1 or 2 years. Recently (about 2 weeks ago) users began complaining about being logged on with a temporary profile. Investigation showed a lot of open file handles from previous (no longer existing) sessions on the file server.

E.g. user1 had logged on to rds one day and logged off in the evening (not just disconnected, really logged off) and when he logs in the other day on the rds farm he is logged on with a temporary profile due to the profile service being unable to access the roaming profile as it is (event log) "in use by another process".

Looking at the fileserver's open files we can see that a lot of files of that user profile (and of other users, too!) are shown as open - all with read option and no apparent locks.

When user1 loggs off these locks stay! Manually closing the open files on the file server allows the user to log on to the rds servers normally. Subsequent logging off may or may not create those stale open file handles.

We have no clue as to when these enormous amount of open file handles (we talk about 100s of files per user) happen. It seems to be at random and not hitting every user.

Has anyone ever met a similar problem? Or at least an idea on how to prevent logged off users to still have open files on the file server?

Any answer pointing in the direction of a possible solution or source of this problem is greatly appreciated!

Windows server 2008 R2 - Audit folder access

I was asked by our Security department to monitor file server activities and I'm scratching my head how to do so:

1. Date and Time of mailbox of the HR departmental share is accessed by the domain admins and other service account (backup etc)

There are domain admins and service accounts (backup etc) have full permission on the file server

If someone out there can give me some pointers to start, I really appreciate. Thanks a bunch!

After migration of Indexing Service to Windows 2008 the content search in pdf files stopped working

$

Hi ,

We have designed a custom search as an aspx page that uses Indexing Service to search content in a set of a mixed types of documents (doc , pdf , xls , etc)

We have moved the Indexing Service from a Windows 2003 server to Windows 2008 and ever since the Indexing Service stopped searching the pdf files. The search returns only other type of files but pdf .

On the new server where the Indexing Service resides I have installed Adobe PDF iFilter 11 for 64-bit platform , that I believe it's the plugin the Indexing Service uses to search the pdf's content.

Has anyone gotten the Indexing Service search content in pdf files on Windows 2008 server ?

Thanks,

Mihaela

Dynamic Disks with Windows Server Failover Clustering

$

I would like to use dynamic disks in a Win2008R2 Failover cluster out of the box : I'd be able to migrate disks from one  storage array to another transparently to the application and without interruption of the service.

My plan is to :
- I present a LUN from the new array to the same server
- then create a RAID 1 mirror between the two LUN's
- when sync'ed, break off and delete the old LUN.

Doing so, I mirror and copy all data to the new LUN with no downtime and I do not lose my VSS Snapshots

I found this 3 years old article (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2009/12/16/9937435.aspx) but
3 years in IT is like stone-age.

Does same limitation exists for Win2008R2 ? Is it supported in W2008R2 Failover Cluster config ?

Thanks !!!

Disable Work Folders client free disk space check?

I have 3 TB Work Folder and I had todisable client side because of error.

Now I try to re-enable it, but I get "This location doesn't have enough free space. Choose a different location or clear 2,68 TB of space on this drive".

Client and Server sides have same files, so do I really need to delete all my client side files and resync everything?

Thanks!

Greetings,

I have a Windows Server 2012 Standard machine running dedup and dfsr.  I've been monitoring the dfsrs.exe process to diagnose performance issues, and I've noticed a lot of read/write operations on files in the ?:\System Volume Information\Dedup\ChunkStore directory.  Is this expected?

Optimize-Volume -retrim is not giving me my space back!

Hello, I have a Server 2012 R2 failover cluster with two hosts. I have a dynamically expanding VHDX attached to my file server. The current filesize is 3,017,413,632KB (2.8TB). I have moved lots of things off this volume so the actual space used on the volume inside the VM says 2.22TB. I have ran the following command:

Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter D -ReTrim -Verbose

It then seems like it goes through the process with no errors. Usually when I do this on other virtual machines, once I shut down the VM and power it back on - the size of the VHDX on the host usually shrinks down to the expected size. But, I've tried this 3 or 4 times and the size doesn't seem to be going down?

Here's my output from the command:

PS C:\Users\administrator> Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter D -ReTrim -Verbose

Any ideas? I need to shrink this volume urgently as I'm running out of space on the host!

FYI the storage is a HP P2000 MSA G3 SAS storage array. I have used this command previously on the same cluster on a different virtual machine with a test VHDX that I've removed data from and ran the command - and the size of the VHDX shrunk as expected.

Hi everyone.

I have a big project in mind and i would like some help. I need to set up an active directory for almost 500 users. My knowledge is not that good and i have some basic questions. I have 5 server machines available and i am looking for the best configuration for the system (file server, application, backup, print, clock, isa,a antivirus, dns etc). There will be no internet access, and i would like to give only static ip addresses for security reasons. Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance

User Documents Folders Not Following User to Other Computers

$

Thank you in advance.

We just upgraded our Student Share Server from 2008 (old box) to 2012 (new box).  A simple process, so we thought, as the school period started.  When the Students log in for the first time the folders get created on the new server and they are able to save etc. to the folders.

The issue is when they go from a classroom PC to a Library PC, their Documents Folder path is not following them.

We looked over the GPO and the only change was the Server Share Path.

Any assistance is always greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I want to configure permissions on a folder so the users can't delete files, however if I unmark delete permissions this user can't rename files, an save as any file in this folder. Is there anyway to make users just can't delete files? Thanks.

Hi,

Is it possible to change my disks as I change my Case for my Server without having trouble with reseating the Disks in my Pool to a different SATA/SAS Port, Or is in a Storage Space is necessary that disks stay at the original port as created?

Thanks
