Event ID 5014 DFSR

Hi guys,

I have this event id in the logs on the DC and as I know most likely it is due to the network connectivity problems or backup from Veeam or Symantec Backup Exec. I decided to check most the events and I found out that there are some different one from:

The DFS Replication service is stopping communication with partner DOM-002 for replication group Domain System Volume due to an error. The service will retry the connection periodically.

Additional Information:
Error: 9036 (Paused for backup or restore)
Connection ID: 2DCAAFD0-561E-48EA-9375-5F69FA2CF1BD
Replication Group ID: 62A298CE-FF75-4B57-8358-354D5C3184AD

Here they are:

The DFS Replication service is stopping communication with partner DOM-002 for replication group Domain System Volume due to an error. The service will retry the connection periodically.

Additional Information:

Replication Group ID: 62A298CE-FF75-4B57-8358-354D5C3184AD

The DFS Replication service is stopping communication with partner DOM-002 for replication group Domain System Volume due to an error. The service will retry the connection periodically.

Additional Information:
Error: 1723 (The RPC server is too busy to complete this operation.)

Replication Group ID: 62A298CE-FF75-4B57-8358-354D5C3184AD

Both of the server are Virtual Machines.

The question is: Should I do something on the server? Upgrading, adding hardware, change something? Thanks in advance

Storage Pool Creation in server 2012 standard

I installed windows server 2012 standard on a 1T.B hard drive with 3 partitions, ie drive c (system drive) 348 GB, drive D 465 GB and drive E 97.3 GB. Without installing a separate an unallocated drive, I tried to create a storage pool but so rightly failed. I logged on to a forum where I was informed that in order to view the physical drives and primordial disks in the storage pool wizard, I hard to create an unallocated partion on the drive. I then created a seperate an unallocated drive by of 19.3 GB buy partitioning drive D 465 GB. However, after all this, their is still no physical drive or primordial drive displayed. When I use the power shell cmdlet Get-PhysicalDisk, Canpool is false. Do I have to buy a seperate hard drive or can this be fixed?

Thank you

DFS FileServers

Guys, good morning

I have 2 File Server and DFS namespace, with replication smoothly.

However some folders are with the wrong timing, and very strange, for example:

Fileserver01 - Notifications folder contains 1362 files
Fileserver02 - Notifications folder contains 1362 files

The problem is when commands list the amount of files directly from the folder (right button on the folder - properties), the amount of non knocks files, now if I open each folder and select all the files the amount hits.

Examples:
Folder notifications fileserver01 - I right button and go to properties - shows 1362 files
Folder notifications fileserver02 - I right button and go to properties - shows 1405 files

What is this problem? and how to solve?

Thank you

Desktop folders disappear

We have some staff members at our school that when they login in the morning, there desktops are emptied out. We go in and restore from previous versions and all is well until a few days later, they disappear again during login. How do I track this down. Not happening to everyone just a select few.

So far it has just affected the "desktop" folders and not "documents" folder. We are running server 2008 on file server, Windows 7 on desktop and Active Directory is a 2012R2 server.

I use folder redirection in a GPO and it has worked flawlessly until about 3 weeks ago and this started up.

WMI SecurityCenter Namespace

This is a 2012 R2 Server being used as a terminal server

I'm having an issue where there is no "SecurityCenter" namespace in my WMI.

When I try to access it from wbemtest I get the 0x8004100e error for Invalid namespace

When I look under wmimgmt->Properties -> Security and expand Root there is no SecurityCenter
SFC didn't turn up anything

/salvage repository and /verifyrepository are both saying the repository is consistent.

any ideas why it is not there or how I can get this added?

Optimize-Volume -retrim is not giving me my space back!

Hello, I have a Server 2012 R2 failover cluster with two hosts. I have a dynamically expanding VHDX attached to my file server. The current filesize is 3,017,413,632KB (2.8TB). I have moved lots of things off this volume so the actual space used on the volume inside the VM says 2.22TB. I have ran the following command:

Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter D -ReTrim -Verbose

It then seems like it goes through the process with no errors. Usually when I do this on other virtual machines, once I shut down the VM and power it back on - the size of the VHDX on the host usually shrinks down to the expected size. But, I've tried this 3 or 4 times and the size doesn't seem to be going down?

Here's my output from the command:

Recreated DFS-R group, Namespace entry is messed up

$

OK, so, I was having an issue with around 10 DFS-R groups, where they've been in existence for a while, but for some reason they're now saying they're waiting for Initial replication. After just deleting the rep group and re-creating it didn't fix the issue, I deleted the rep group, deleted the dfsrprivate folder from both rep partners, and then re-created the DFS-R group. As far as that goes, DFS-R is working great.

However, now I have another issue...I left the Namespace entry in place, since it's accessed by the users. But when I created the new DFS-R group, naming it exactly the same, the replicated folder entry under the Replicated Folders tab in the rep group shows it as not being published. However, if I go into Namespaces, I can see it there, and I can browse to it just fine.

So, without deleting the Namespace entry, is there a way to attach the new DFS-R group to the pre-existing Namespace entry? If it needs to be deleted, it'll be a huge hassle, since I'll have to put in a change order, and I'll need to get it scheduled, and a communication will need to go out, etc etc. I could swear I've been able to re-create rep groups before without going through this hassle, so I'm not sure what happened.

Saving to network mapped drive error

Hello,

The problem i am having is that sporadically in the district some of our students are getting errors when writing files to the their network storage drive (Y:\). The steps for causing the errors in a fully reproducible way are:

Create a folder Y:\Folder1 -> Browse to Y:\Folder1 -> Create a new file "Test.doc" -> Launch test.doc

Add some data -> save and close

Browse back to root of Y:\ and rename Folder1 to Folder2 and then browse back into it Y:\Folder2

Launch Test.doc and add some data - save and you get an error: "Y:\Folder2\Test.doc" is read-only. Do you want to save changes to a different file name.

I am hoping someone here can get me pointed in the direction of debugging this.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

I have a problem with my DFS server. When I click on a replication group under the namespace, and click on the replication tab, I see the error bellow:

replication status: unknown click here for details

And when I click on the word here I get the error bellow:

System.ArgumentException: An item with the same key has already been added.
at System.ThrowHelper.ThrowArgumentException(ExceptionResource resource)
at System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary'2.Insert(TKey key, TValue value,
Boolean add)
at
Microsoft.RemoteFileSystems.Management.Dfs.AdQueryHelper.QueryFrs2PublishedLinks(String rootPath)
at
Microsoft.remoteFileSystems.Management.Dfs.LinkReplicationData.ResolveReplicatedLinks()

This issue started after the namespace was accidentally deleted and the replication groups added again from another serer.

Please help.

Thank you

Folder Redirection Clean Up

$

Hi, hope I am posting this is the right place.  We have setup folder redirection in our Active Directory environment for both our staff and students.  What I would like to know is if there is a way to clean up (delete) the folders created by folder redirection once an account is disabled?  I know you remove folder redirection via a group policy, but that would mean the user will need to log in again, right?  Not sure if what I am thinking can be done at all.

Basically a script or something that can check if an account is enabled or disabled, and if disabled delete their created folder redirection folder.

Thanks.

C drive partitions and shrinking

Hi

Im trying to partition my C drive to duel boot with linux. Windows 8.1 Computer management tells me that i have free space 65% 434gb,   681947mb size before shrink. But when i try to shrink volume in disk management ( right click )  only 4539mb space to shrink therefore not enough room to create partition 10gb recommended?   I have also accidently created recovery partitions on C totaling 36gb, these partions are empty, when i right click on them to remove them it only shows the help menu. How do i remove them ?

Many thanks Tim

Bitlocker - Used Disk Space to full disk encryption

Hi,

Just a quick question (out of curiosity): Is it possible to go from "Used Disk Space" to "Full Encryption"?
Or do you always need to decrypt and encrypt again?

Thanks!

File Share Windows 2012 R2 & Citrix NetScaler Gateway problem ..

$

Hi

We  have a problem with file share bookmark via Citrix NetScaler Gateway ..  e just changed our MS dfs servers to Windows Server 2012 R2 (before Windows Server 2008 r2) ..

Before any changes everything was working fine. Users could open enterprise file share bookmarks, download and upload files. After we changed our file server to Windows Server 2012 R2 uploads are not working anymore. When pressing Upload it gives"Page cannot be displayed".  Users still can open share and download files. Or file is uploaded but with size 0 KB :(

Citrix enviroment is still the same. We have changed firewall rules to new file server. Rules are same as before.

I took back old file server and it was good. I tried with another 2012 server and same problem with that.

I found on CITRIX forum one thread http://discussions.citrix.com/topic/359725-file-share-bookmark-upload-fails/ where is that comment : "This is more a Microsoft issue on the W2K12 server. There is some know problem between 3rd party SMB clients or unix clients. NS is FreeBSD and is using such client to communicate with file shares. You need to look for MS 2012 server patches related to non windows smb clients and file shares."

Any ideas what's wrong with this? or how solve that problem ?

 Thanks

DFS - Setting up replication group between 2 servers in a DMZ

$

Hi,

I have 2 DCs on 2 distinct sites that can speak to each other - no port filter

I have 1 RODCs on each site. They can speak to each other - no port filter

I have 1 Application servers in a DMZ on each sites. They can speak to each other - no port filter

Each DC and RODC have FFA access to the local DMZ

Each DC and RODC do not have access to the remote site DMZ

Each application server can talk to the local DC hosting the namespace via the following ports:

* udp&tcp 137, udp 138, tcp 139, udp&tcp 389, tcp 135, udp&tcp 445, tcp and udp 49152 to 65535

(Which are the ones in the documentation as long as I got the right one)

Each application server authenticate against a local RODC in a shared DMZ. (As RODC don't seem to be able to host namespaces I had to open the DFS ports to the internal DC :( at least for now)

Question:

* The Application servers can't browse DFS Namespaces - How do I go about debugging what is missing, especially since the application servers authenticate against the RODCs but the namespaces are on the DC.

* Is there a way to configure the replication without allowing the DCs to access the remote DMZ ?

I honestly did not think this kind of setup would be so un-common :) Or I might have gone about it the wrong way

Thanks for any insight you can provide

Edit: I did a network capture and the 2 servers talk, but not sure how to find where / what fails. The error I get is: delegation information for the namespace cannot be queried the specified domain...

To get that error, I need to select the namespace server, then the namespace and this happens when I try to browse the namespace server and see the folders.

Robocopy Bug - Unnecessarily Copies files with the same Owner

$

Robocopy detects changes made in file security on the destiation as a change in ownership.  This forces the file(s) to be copied when the file should be skipped.  When performed on a large data set, this adds significant time.  Am I doing something wrong?  I'd like to have this bug confirmed and submitted.

To repeat this bug you can:
1. Run This command - Robocopy <Source> <Destenation> /MIR /Copyall
2. On the destination, right click a file and click properties.  Go to the security tab and add user or group the file.  Click ok.
3. Run this command - Robocopy <Source> <Destenation> /copy:DATO /E /S /PURGE
4. You will see that robocopy copied this file and did NOT skip it as is should have.
5. Change the permissions on the destination file once more by adding a different user or group to the file security permissions as you did in step #2.
6. Run this command - Robocopy <Source> <Destenation> /copy:DAT /E /S /PURGE
7. You will see that Robocopy skipped the file this time, now that the "O" was removed,  proving the bug.

DFS Topology OK but replication not happening

$

Hi,

We have DFS sharing a folder across 5 machines, all on Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter. We recently introduced two new VMs into the mix, and added folders on an E:\Media drive with the folder into DFS. Then we had to resize the disk sizes on the VMs, and Windows automagically renamed those drives D:\Media. Once we got customer complaints about files being missing, we went into DFS Management, but the Member drives were correctly listed as D:\Media drives. However files are not replicating across servers.

Verify Topology says that "the topology for the replication group GROUP is fully connected. Data can replicate throughout the topology".

Create Diagnostic Report shows error ID 6404, solution here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Windows+Operating+System&ProdVer=5.2.3790.1830&EvtID=6404&EvtSrc=DFSR&LCID=1033

Solution says "Fix this problem by configuring the replicated folder with a valid local path using the DFS Management snap-in or the Dfsradmin.exe command-line tool."

However the snap-in shows the correct D:\Media folder, and indeed offers no way to change this under the server Properties dialog windows, under the Replicated Folder tab, as everything is greyed out.

Can someone offer some advice on how to fix this as we now have many folders out of synch each with updated data?

Unable to add FSRM - reboot required but not

$

I have been digging at this one for a while but with no success at all so far. Server is Win2012R2 Standard with DFS running. Trying to get FSRM feature installed but it fails reporting a reboot is required. Reboots do not change anything. Research so far has shown this to be a frequent problem with RODCs or when attempting to install WSUS. This server is not and has never been a DC of any kind and we are not running WSUS on it.

Tried installing via powershell and DISM. Both failed.
No errors or warnings reported in System, Setup, or Application logs.
DISM /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth returns "No component store corruption detected."
Repair-windowsimage -online -checkhealth returns the following:
     Path:
     Online: False
     Image Health State: Healthy
     Restart Needed: False

The last bit on the repair-windowsimage is strange as in one place the system is saying no restart is needed and in another it is.

Any additional suggestions would be appreciated. TIA.

Edit: also, no outstanding updates or errors on update at this time.

NTFS Permission scoped to This Folder Only

$
0
0

I have a NetApp CIFS volume serving out many shares. The NTFS formatted volume root has a folder in it called ShareRoot e.g. /vol/shareroot/. In NetApp world,as this is a CIFS volume and not a LUN, you share out this root initially then create all your share root folders under this root e.g. to create more folders you access \\netappfiler\admin\ share and create the folders then create the shares with the NetApp mgmt. tools:

  • Admin   - /vol/shareroot
  • Share1 - /vol/shareroot/folder1
  • Share2 - /vol/shareroot/folder1

Naturally, for granularity we break inheritance on each subfolder under /vol/shareroot/ and add our DACLs as we see fit. For various reasons (3rd part monitoring apps etc.) I need to leave the root admin share open for admins. That means these admins can see the share root folders for all shares. because of this I wanted to add the following to each share root folder to protect it from someone doing anything silly:

  • Add Everyone - Deny Delete - This folder only

I'm setting this by access the share path (e.g. \\mynetappfiler\share1\ and it works fine but when I click apply the explorer UI then seems to spin through every single subfolder and file in that share. It only add the permission to the root folder as required so why does it go through every file when the scoping s 'This Folder Only'? The reasons I ask is I have hundreds of these to do and it's time consuming. I was expecting ti to return immediately as I'm only adding an entry that applies to a single folder.
