Corrupt Previous Versions

We are running Server 2012 R2 and have a 4 TB drive connected to two 10 GB ethernet with multipath to an IBM V3700.  In Windows we have enabled deduplication and previous versions. We have also added the reg key to allow the server to keep 400 previous versions.

We have started seeing corrupt errors when trying to restore some of the older previous versions.  All the newer ones appear to be fine.  We have had no users report issues and both Microsoft Backup and Backup Exec 2014 don't report corruptions.

I opened a ticket with Microsoft and have done all requested fixes. 1) Install all windows updates 2) Install hot fix for NTFS 3) run chkdsk  All have been unable to fix the issue.  Microsoft is now telling me that I have a hardware issue and should contact a data recovery center.

This does not make sense to me. If we were having hardware issues wouldn't we see corrupt files in other location and not just previous versions?

Does anyone else have any ideas? I have seen forums that it could be a corrupt vss index.
