Storage Spaces Tiering Service running forever, killing user performance

I just installed a new Storage Server 2012 R2 OEM box, with a single mirrored storage space using 4x Samsung 840 Pro SSDs and 12x 3TB Toshiba 7200RPM HDDs. I used the wizard to configure this as a tiered space with a single large virtual drive, and it appears to have configured with 2 columns and a 1GB writeback cache on the SSDs, as well as a proper tiering scheme between the SSDs and HDDs.

The scheduled task starts tiering maintenance at 10pm (I moved it back from 1am), and tiering runs all night with 100% disk activity at very low throughput (0.5 - 3.0 MBps), until I stop the Storage Spaces Tiering service in the AM when users arrive, as they report bad storage response times while it runs - very little data is added to the disk during the day (say, 5 - 10GB), and usage patterns don't change much, so I'm curious as to why this is happening.

I've let the service run a few times over weekends, and it sometimes "finishes" a run, but the next night it will go right back to churning at low throughput and continue into the morning until a manual service stop.

Any ideas?

In DFS, How to make servers LEAST COST for different subnets.

Hello, We setup DFS in our domain (SERVER1) and we replicated the DFS namespace into a server which is also a member of the domain but it is on a DIFFERENT SUBNET (let's call this server SERVER2).
How can I make sure that the SERVER2 DFS redirection should NOT go to SERVER1 unless SERVER2 is down, etc.? or How do we make sure SERVER2 clients don’t go to the wrong site and vice versa WHEN we enable DFS on multiple systems?

I have also enable least expensive target selection (site-costing) in DFS but I am not sure if that will work.

Note: SERVER2 is not a Domain Controller
SERVER1 is Server 2008 Standard
SERVER2 is Server 2008 R2 Standard

Please help and Thank you in advance.

Regards,
Rod

Shadow Copies are working but not showing in previous versions for 1 particular drive.

Hi,

I'm having an issue on Windows 2008R2 where a single drive is making shadow copies yet I am not seeing anything in previous versions.  I can revert the full drive but not restore/browse the previous versions for some reason.

vssadmin list shadows displays all the shadow copies dating back around 1 month, here's an example

Contents of shadow copy set ID: {01b14ae5-3c9d-47e2-8e8c-0aa7c8a3b0db}
Contained 1 shadow copies at creation time: 02/05/2014 07:02:45
      Shadow Copy ID: {3a5d7210-55c2-4b4f-901f-d95e7f282174}
         Original Volume: (I:)\\?\Volume{1f7f8465-c1f3-11e2-ba7e-005056823ebf}\
         Shadow Copy Volume: \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy538
         Originating Machine: svr-fs02.bootham.school.local
         Service Machine: svr-fs02.bootham.school.local
Provider: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
         Type: ClientAccessible
Attributes: Persistent, Client-accessible, No auto release, No writers,
 Differential

Some suggestions are that a reboot will solve the problem but I can't do this in hours.  The event log doesn't show anything of note.

Volume shadow copy service is running and other drive previous versions are showing as expected.

The administrative share is available..............

Not sure what else to check, any ideas?

Proper way to give permissions to subfolder, but not any folders above it

$

I need to give someone permissions to a folder that is buried about 4 layers deep on a file share, to which they can't have permissions to the folders/files above that specific folder.  I can give them permissions on exactly the subfolder they need, and a shortcut directly into that folder, but what permissions do I have to give them on the folder trail leading to that specific subfolder?

It's on a Server 2003 server if that matters.

SOFS limited to 2 PCIE slots

I am going to deploy SOFS using existing HP DL360p G8 hardware. The problem I am facing is that I am limited to 2 PCIE slots and I need 4 SAS cables from each node to the JBOD as well as I need 2 NICs running at 10GbE.

The way I see it here are my choices:

Option A

Slot 1: LSI 9207-8E (2 SAS cables)

Slot 2: LSI 9207-8E (2 SAS cables)

Onboard HP FlexFabric 533FLR-T - 2 port 10GbE network adapter

Option B

Slot 1: LSI 9206-16E (4 SAS cables)

Slot 2: Intel X540-T2 - 2 port 10GbE network

Onboard HP 4 x 1GbE

I know having a single HBA per machine is not ideal, but it would allow for easier networking. I'd like to think I am better off choosing option B as I am not sure if I can configure A with a converged network. Any suggestions?

Can't access shared folders on win 2012 R2 with Android phone

$

Hello, this is my first post here so I don't know if I choose the right category......

But anyway, my problem is like this

I‘ve got a win 2012 r2 server(192.168.1.10), installed with essential experiences and anything comes with that;

A win 7 PC(192.168.1.2) connected to the server by connecter;

A Android smart phone(192.168.1.5).

There is no problem with the PC visiting the server's SMB share & the phone visiting the PC's SMB share, but I can't access the server's share from my smart phone.

When I'm using x-plore I got “failed to connect", and when using ES file explorer, I got a flash of ”please wait“ and nothing happens.

I've tried turn off the firewall ,no help.

checked the firewall log , I found "2014-03-14 16:08:30 ALLOW TCP 192.168.1.5 192.168.1.10 33531 445 0 - 0 0 0 - - - RECEIVE". I suspect this means the firewall has nothing to do with my problem.

checked event log, no finds(I'm not sure what to look for, but I didn't find anything about my phone's ip under things starts with SMB( ex: SMBClient, SMBServer.....))

enabled ”send unencrypted password to 3rd-party SMB server“ in local security policy, nothing changed

I have no idea where the problem lies, can anyone help me with this stuff?

Thanks

2) Secondary 2003 R2

3) 2008 R2

on Primary have DFS enabled  and physically files allocated here. On Secondary also have dfs role and have its own files shared. When i turn off Secondary domain controller the users have issue with files provided by Primary DC also this errors appears using unc path directly to Primary server. Browsing of folders is slow and sometimes cant open excel files. This error is randomly but if i turn on secondary domain back all seems ok...

Changing Boot Partition via Windows

Hello,

I am have a back-up server running Windows Server 2008 R2. This server has 8 partitions, 7 that are exactly the same than the others servers and one that will look for the servers and if one of them are down, it should change the boot partition to the one corresponding to the server down, and reboot on that partition, so it can take place of the lacking server.

I am trying to do this using a VBS Script, using the Diskpart application, for example:

Diskpart > list disk > select disk n > select partition m > active

And then reboot the computer.

Will this work? Will it change to boot the system I need?

Another problem is that I am new to this language, does anyone have any suggestion? The checking if the server is online part is alredy done, I am strugling in calling diskpart and making it accepts those commands.

Thanks!

Webfolders / Webdav URL

$

I have a website that works fine with the WebDAV redirector.

When "Web Folders" were supported, there used to be a FOLDER= parameter in the URL, that would allow a (domain) user browsing an HTML site to click on a link and 'open' (single click) an Explorer (Windows explorer) window with that folder visible; files could then be copied / pasted.

Although we're a consulting company, I have a large number of users that cannot seem to be able to follow instructions to map a shared drive.  Honestly, "Drop Box" and the like really is an easier interface.

Is there any easy way to have a web page (could be asp.net, etc) that has a 'link' that you can click on and allow you to upload, download, and rename files?

Note: we do not have a license for SharePoint, the owners have decided it's too expensive.

I've looked at some of the new Server 2012R2 functionality, but nothing seems quite as simple as "click on a link and explorer opens up" (not IE, windows explorer) that we used to have back in 2003.

The folders I'm talking about are also 'shared' folders; for example, the "Sales" folder, or "Project" folder.  Although Work Folders looked promising, this note:

Users sync to their own folder on the file server - there is no support for syncing arbitrary file shares (e.g.: sync the sales demos share to my device)

pretty much kills that (this is exactly our scenario).

Of course, SkyDrive professional would probably do it, but our owners want to keep our content in-house.

Any suggestions for a way to do this with 2012R2?

Set/re-set active DFS share for all computers in a site

$

we have groups of computers in two sites that are configured to access files in DFS replicated shares, replicated between servers within each of the two sites.

The other day, I happened to look at the DFS tab on the properties on several of these computers and was surprised to see that the active share/link was actually the server in the other site. I assume that there may have been some outage or slowness that might cause clients to temporarily switch over to the alternate share?, the link between the two sites is slow so if my clients are accessing the share in the other site it is much slower....

I see the similar question being asked in this forum, but what is the correct procedure to "reset" the active share on the DFS share for my client computers so that they are all defaulting to the server within the same site?

thanks!

experience slow file server performance

Hi all,

currently we are expecting some strange problems with our fileserver. It is a Windows Server 2012 server with newest hardware. After one to two weeks uptime, Windows 7 clients cannot load their explorer window. It takes a huge time while the green bar in the address bar is trying to load the explorer overview and finally stops with a blank explorer window.

The shares can still be accessed through UNC commands and the fileserver can be reached with a ping command. This error doesn't occur when opening the explorer window on another server.

On the fileserver I can see a lot of open files called "\msftewds".

I have found an article of microsoft describing this problem but there was no final solution for me:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822219/en-us

The only workaround for the moment is to restart the server (what is not that easy because it's productive). After a restart the "\msftewds" files are gone in the open files overview.

Appreciate any help. :)

Best regards

Access Based Enumeration error:The directory name is invalid

Randomly when people open files on our DFS file servers with ABE enabled they receive an error (The directory name is invalid).  Disabling ABE seems to resolve the issue but we would like to keep ABE enabled.  I have tried searching for a solution or hotfix but have not been able to find much information regarding this.  All of our DFS file servers are server 2008R2 virtual machines except for maybe one box that is still 2003R2 (physical).

Creating a RAM/memory based iSCSI virtual disk on Window Server 2012 R2 64-bit

$

In the past, with Wintarget on WS03 and with the Windows iSCSI Target 3.3 on WS08R2 I have been able to create RAMDISK based virtual iSCSI disks using the the RAMDISK:<size in MB> notation in the the file/disk path section. That doesn't seem to work with the WS12 R2.

I have installed the iSCSI target role and am able to create a iSCSI VHD/x, but am unable to create one based on RAM. How do I do this?

And this setup is purely for Performance testing, so please don't be horrified by the fact that I want to create RAM based iSCSI disks. :)

Robocopy not copying ACLs

Take following directory:

D:\Directory\Sub\

D: has explicit permissions and are passed to sub directories.

D:\Directory\ has inherited and explicit permissions.

D:\Directory\Sub\ only has inherited permissions.

I'm using robocopy to make an exact copy D:\Directory\ on a new drive, including ACLs and ACEs, with the following syntax:

robocopy "D:\Directory" "G:\Directory" /e /sec /log:logfile

But not a ACL is copied over. I end up with plain "User" and "Administrators" ACLs on the new directory.

This is being done on a file server, and I'm using a domain administrator to perform the action in an elevated command prompt.

It might be worth mentioning that the storage is a SAN (IBM V7000). The D drive is a raw device, the new drive a plain VMDK.

DFSR log flooded

Hey,

I have something weird going on in my dfsr logs, some weeks ago one of the members has crashed. I have disabled every replicated folder for that particular member, waited some refreshed the config with dfsrdiag pollad and started to enable folders one by one, waited to complete initial sync on each of them before enabling the next. It has finished without issues and replication works without problems in all ways. Though i noticed my DFSR log is flooded, here is a small excerpt

Any ideas what's going on here, other than that DFSR works flawless replication is immediate, Eventlog, health and propagation logs show no problem (other than preexisting content taking up space on the rebuilt server).

I have tried to stop DFSR for some time on the server that crashed but logs keep getting flooded, so I'm not even sure at this point it has anything to do with the crashed member. There are 3 members currently, all kind of windows versions, 2008R2/2012/2012R2 in full mesh topology.

Windows 2008 connected via UNC Session to a isilon

Hello,

following "Problem".

Isilon is a NAS System which provied NAS Space via SMB or NFS. In our solution the Windows Server 2008 connect the Fileshare via UNC Path witch works good.

The Isilon also provides the possiblity to distribute all incoming connections via a Round Robin DNS Service directly on the the Isilon across all front end NICs.

The problem now is when we connect to the ISILON with UNS the Server makes a DNS Lookup for the right IP-Adresse. But when the Server starts another session via UNC to the same "target" but to a other file while the first session is also opened the Server don´t  make a new DNS query. The TTL of the first DNS lookup was 0 so there is nothing in the DNS Cache. So what is the Problem? Where is the UNC Information stored on the Server. I need the possiblity that the Server starts a dns query for all UNC Sessions.

Can anybody help?

Recover purged data on windows server 2012 file system with active deduplication

 Hello,

I have a very difficult situation, i was using robocopy command to move data between two virtual disk in a windows 2012 file server, but i miss used the command  and it purged most of the information of our public relations department

These information was in a disk with active windows 2012 deduplication, i try to recover it from our system center DPM backups but i understand later that the backup was not valid because the DPM version we used at the time do no recognize the new deduplication feature, so all the data files now are corrupted

I also try to use the Getdataback software to recover deleted files but the most i found was the chunkdata from deduplication

Now i need to understand what chances we wave to recover some or all of this data using the DPM backups we have available or reconstructing the deduplication using the chunk data

Best Regards

Hello,

I am Running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edition. I am seeing this behavior that first disk from SAN i.e. disk1 on windows is always getting mounted as offline irrespective of SAN policy.

However other SAN disks are mounted fine i.e. online if I set "san policy" to onlineAll.

Could anybody tell me if there is any special setting for disk1.
