Unable to start Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider

I was attempting to fix random VSS errors on one of our clients DC's when I found several references to a fix that involved re-registering various DLL's.  I ran into a problem while re-registering the swprv.dll.  It was then that I began reading that regsvr32 was no longer useable in a post Windows Server 2008 R2 world.

Whoops.

I begin searching for a resolution but every response from Microsoft seems to be, "You shouldn't have done that" with no explanation as to how to fix the booboo.

For example in this thread...

social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/2b1f44e0-725a-4fc5-bc1d-69437871fe90/wierd-volume-shadow-copy-service-errors?forum=winserverfiles

The VSS service starts fine and vssadmin list writers returns all stable/0 error writers. I've created the registry entry people keep referencing (the swprv.dll one) and have tried numerous command line attempts to re-register it but so far remain defeated.

Short of comlpetely reinstalling windows is there a possible fix at this point or am I up a creek without a paddle?  I can just turn off AOFO because this is just a redundant DC but I don't like having errors on my screen and I keep getting notices that VSS can't run properly without this service.

Thanks in advance, happy holidays!

greetings,

The file share on one of my windows server 2008 R2 suddenly become unavailable, sometimes I just wait half an hour or one hour or reboot the server and then the issue become solved! I gathered some performance counters for the processes because I believe there is a memory leak, I checked the counters and I suspect the svchost#2 and #3 might not be normal so I'm asking this question if anyone please can check the collected data and advise me.

the windows is 64 bit

installed ram 16 GB

Data deduplication works vice versa

Hello. I have enabled data deduplication on one of my SSD's volumes and then run Start-DedupJob cmdlet with optimizastion parameter on this volume. After dedup completed i check Get-Dedupstatus and get this output:

FreeSpace    SavedSpace   OptimizedFiles     InPolicyFiles      Volume
---------    ----------   --------------     -------------      ------
81.25 GB     9.44 GB      2                  11                 D:

Howevere when i have checked disk space, i discovered that free space was not increased, but instead decreased. (I had 88Gb of free space before deduplication, and after i had 81.25Gb of free space). Also I have checked the only folder in this volume and found it has the same size as before dedup.

Also i tried Start-dedupJob with GarbageCollection type after all, and now i have that output:

FreeSpace    SavedSpace   OptimizedFiles     InPolicyFiles      Volume
---------    ----------   --------------     -------------      ------
81.26 GB     0 B          2                  11                 D:

Why data deduplication worked so strange for me?

Folder Redirection - Secure Root/Parent Folder

Hello,

I want to redirect Users folders to a Fileserver, and also prevent them from browsing the root folder share.

\\Domain\Share$\HR\UserName

According to MS, users only needs (List Folder/Read Data, Create Folders/Append Data) permissions on (HR), But without the (Read Attributes) permission, they can't access the redirected folders (Documents, Music, Pictures ...) through Libraries or their User Folder (Folders icons appear white, nameless and unclickable), even though they have full access on their parent folder (UserName), however, they can access it directly by typing the full UNC.

If I give them (Read Attributes) permission, they can browse and create folders in the root share (HR) easily.

any suggestions?

Hello,

I'm having problems with making full system backup of Windows 2008 R2 x64. It looks like this is related to missing VSS System Writer. When I'm running command "vssadmin list writers" there is no System Writer in writers list and in event log CAPI2 error (event ID 513) is showing with this description:

Can browse subfolders, but cannot map

We have a very strange issue that started last week while I was out of the office. We had a switch go down, and after replacing we are unable to map home directories to subfolders. I can map to the root folder, and browse into the subfolder, but attempting to map with net use or AD brings up System Error 67 and/or 53, network path not found.

Names and IPs resolve fine.

We have MS support working on this, but after working for 2 days I do not have high hopes with them and am reaching out in hopes someone out here can assist.

hi, installed ftp 7.5 and have it working using AD credentials but users who don't have access to directories, see everything.

I'd like it so that they only see the directories they can access, like ABE.

Windows Storage Spaces

We were running out of space on windows storage spaces but we removed a smaller drive and replaced it with a much larger drive. Storage spaces shows 3.16 TB free but windows won’t let anything wright to this drive reporting its out of space?

IN system manager > Files and Storage Services > Volumes > Storage Pools, all drives show fine, the Virtual Disk is fine showing 3.16 TB Free.

When i try to wright to the drive we get an error saying its out of space.

Here is the error we get when trying to wright to this drive

X.XX is needed to copy this item. Delete of move files so you have enough space

DFS vs DFS-R

I have read that it is possible to have DFS-R - replicating of folders -  without actually setting up a DFS name space.

Is that correct?

If correct, what would be gained or lost by doing the two in conjunction/separately?

I guess I'm asking is there any synergy between the two - is DFS-R better in some way if DFS is in place?  Is there a downside to DFS-R if DFS is in place? I understand the benefits of each on their own - just not sure what they bring to the table for each other.

Shares unavailable due to some unapparent reason.

We had a strange issue today, which i cant explain. Maybe some of you could point me to possible cause.

Application where failing because multiple file share was unavailable.

First let me explain the setup.

We have corporate forest, which exists out of four domains. These domains contain various servers. Every production site, has its own production forest, which is separated from the corporate LAN by a Firewall. Yesterday two Biztalk server lost their connections to a share on a server within the production site. This means that both server A1 and A2 in corporate, could no longer connect to shares in the various production sites at the same time while writing a file.

In our troubleshooting we tried to access the share via the command-line which failed. We tried to access that share from a third server, which worked. So the target share was available from A3, but not from A1 and A2. Other shares on other servers within the same production network were available for server A1 and A2, yet other shares on the target were not available to A1 and A2. While A3 can access all shares.

We checked the eventvwr on A1 and 2, but could not find a smoking gun. Rebooted A1 and A2, still no success. We rebooted the target server in one production site, which solved the problem for that site. So in the end we fixed it by rebooting the Share server in every effected production site (4).

Yet as this was production that was effected, we have to explain what happened and what we can do to prevent this issue from occurring again.

Antivirus:

antivirus cant be because 1 target server did not have anti virus installed.

SMB signing:

SMB signing is not enabled by default in file shares, and is not enabled by policy.

Accounts:

The security accounts used to access the share in production sites where not locked-out. And we were able to access the shares from server A3 with those credentials.

A net use time out with "network error 64". Checking dumps on the firewalls did not show anything being blocked.

No more connections available to this remote computer...Urgent Help for File server...

Hi Guys,

I need urgent help regards to our school File server which is having "No more connection to this remote computer error"

on SMB Shares where I usually authenticate with a domain username it used to work fine since till 3 weeks ago.

Now I can browse the SMB shares with only IP... Netbios gets straight away this error message from non-domain joined pc's where the computer needs to connect to the SCCM distribution point on this file server.

Strangely, Domain joined pc's does not have this problem atll they can use Netbios or IP no problem at all. But someone from a standalone laptop or desktop who needs to access shares through netbios gets this message.

Can someone help me please?

I did check DNS yet there is no problem on DNS I checked PTR record for the server to make sure it is not turned in to multihome accidently but nothing at all.

I also did a NETMON where I captured the data from server and the client I get these errors:

Strange DFS-R error

Windows 2008 R2

The DFS Replication service failed to replicate the replicated folder at local path f:\FolderName because the local path is not the fully qualified path name of an existing, accessible local folder.

Created a new Replication Group.  The replication is between 2 servers.  We already have replication working fine among other servers.  I did some research on this error and what I mostly found was in other cases this error started after a drive letter was changed.  Our problem started right from the start, after creating the new Replication Group.  The only difference between this new RG that is getting this error and all the other RG's that we have working fine is;  I don't have DFS targets for these 2 replicated folders.  But I don't believe that's necessary.

This error is seen in the DFSR event logs on the secondary member in the RG.  On the primary member I get this in the event logs:  The DFS Replication service initialized the replicated folder at local path e:\FolderName. This member is the designated primary member for this replicated folder.

Which is good, but it should then start to show some more messages regarding replication.

If I run dfsrdiag replicationstate on the secondary member it is showing updates.  Which is odd, considering the error message.

I tried deleting and recreating the replication group.  No go.  I know it is configured correctly.  The permissions look good.

Anyone seen this error before, and know what the fix is?

Win2012 or win2012R2 storage spaces with SAN storage support

Hi

I need to create fairly large disks +100TB for video media distribution. But on our SAN
storage we only can create 16Tb lun/volumes. <o:p></o:p>

So we like to use win2012 storage spaces for that,  create simple disk there and let SAN storage
running RAID. <o:p></o:p>

I have questioned MS personnel about this, but he insist that this is not possible,
but we are doing this already. Both on win2012 and wind2012/R2 <o:p></o:p>

I know this is not possible in win2012 cluster. You have to have there Jbod SAS disk (on MS
supported list).<o:p></o:p>

If this is not a supported by design in storage spaces, is there any other way to do create large filesystem on top of SAN without 3party tools.

Regards,<o:p></o:p>

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks
