Setting up Work Folders for the first time
Hi all, I manage a site where one of the users needs access to a couple of folders on the server from his iPhone. He has a couple of word and excel documents that he accesses. He only needs access in-house and not outside of the building.
I have set up Work Folders on a Server 2016 box, created a share, installed the Work Folders on his phone but now I’m stuck. Work Folder setup on his phone is asking for an email address or a Work Folders URL and I’m not sure what to type in.
The server: SVR5.domain.local
Sync Share Name: WorkFolders
User: Support
This is just a test setup so that I can see how it’s going to work and then I can make changes after that.
Cannot save excel file from 2012r2 server network share MS office
We have a shared drive on our 2012r2 server with a folder for our part-time staff's time cards in .xlsx. We want to allow the users to access, edit, and save their timecards. We do not want them to be able to delete them though. Until recently we were able to do this with USERS having read, write, execute, and their group PART-TIME USERS having delete permissions set to DENY. This has now stopped working and users get "Document not Saved" error. OS's affected 7,10 Office versions 2019,2016,2007 - (But oddly still works fine with Office 2002).
Is it possible to configure permissions to deny users the ability to delete file from our shared drive without hindering their ability to edit those file?
DFS Replication between two sites.
Dear all,
Recently I migrated my 2008 DFS servers to new 2016 DFS servers. Now I have one DFS server ( DFS01 - 2016 ) in site A which is assigned as primary server and also I have secondary DFS server ( DFS02 - 2016 ) in site B.
All users data has been moved to primary DFS server ( DFS -2016 ) which is located in site A and started access by end users. I want to create DFS replication from primary to secondary DFS server because backup will happen at secondary server. Instead of initiate full replication all data in primary server ( 6 TB ) to secondary server can I first using copy method all data from primary to secondary server, then after copy completed I will initiate the replication.
My concern if I'm using copy paste method then continue with DFS Replication does all the changes file in primary DFS server also will be replication to secondary DFS server?. My objective is I want to reduce bandwidth utilization by doing full data replication and to shorten the time for secondary DFS server getting updated data as primary server.
Really appreciate advise from expert!!!
Thank you!
Large number of open file handles on fileserver (Server 2012R2) after user's rds session has long been terminated through log off
Hi,
we do have an rds farm with roaming profiles (not profile disks) consisting of 6 terminal servers ("srvts001" to "srv006" 2012 R2), 2 domain controllers ("srvdc01", "srvdc02" 2012 R2), 1 SQL/Fileserver ("srvsql01" 2012 R2).
Roaming profiles are stored on srvsql01 in share RDS. Oplocks are disabled, directory caching is disabled.
Everything was running without problems for 1 or 2 years. Recently (about 2 weeks ago) users began complaining about being logged on with a temporary profile. Investigation showed a lot of open file handles from previous (no longer existing) sessions on the file server.
E.g. user1 had logged on to rds one day and logged off in the evening (not just disconnected, really logged off) and when he logs in the other day on the rds farm he is logged on with a temporary profile due to the profile service being unable to access the roaming profile as it is (event log) "in use by another process".
Looking at the fileserver's open files we can see that a lot of files of that user profile (and of other users, too!) are shown as open - all with read option and no apparent locks.
When user1 loggs off these locks stay! Manually closing the open files on the file server allows the user to log on to the rds servers normally. Subsequent logging off may or may not create those stale open file handles.
We have no clue as to when these enormous amount of open file handles (we talk about 100s of files per user) happen. It seems to be at random and not hitting every user.
Has anyone ever met a similar problem? Or at least an idea on how to prevent logged off users to still have open files on the file server?
Any answer pointing in the direction of a possible solution or source of this problem is greatly appreciated!
How to disable the option "You don't currently have permission to access this folder." ?
I Build new folder as Administrator, the Users access is "Deny" ( all sectors )
When I'm trying to reach this folder from other user (Normal User) , I get this massage
Then the user can try use other user login, to reach that folder.
I want that user will get "access denied" for this trying, and not option to try with other user login.
How can is do it ?

Can VSS snapshot recover from ransomware Attack ?
Hi everyone,
Well, I want to know if enabling VSS snapshot on the Disks drives can handle ransomware attack, I mean if I have multiple Healthy VSS snapshots and my data is infected by ransomware, could I recover from one of healthy snapshots ?

Redirected folders - Excel creates .TMP files while word renames them
User creates an excel document and saves it to their documents folder, the file name is correct on the users device but on the server share it's named as XXXXXX.tmp where X is random numbers. If the user closes the document now the server file remains as the .TMP file. If the user makes additional changes and clicks save a 2nd file with the correct file name and excel extension appears on the server share while the original .tmp file remains as well.
If I perform a manual sync or log off\log on sync centre reports that all files are in sync, even if there is just a .tmp file not the correct file + the .tmp file
If there is the correct file + a .tmp file users can open the file and make edits and save and the correct file is updated not the .tmp file. If a user saves a file, closes it there is only a .tmp file on server. If they reopen it and then save a new .tmp file is created on the server while their correct file is updated.
If a user saves then closes only the .tmp resides on the server while locally the correct file exists, if I delete the .tmp file then sync centre advises there is a conflict after 24 hours. If it is less than 24 hours then nothing is reported and only the user has a copy of the file. After 24 hours sync centre advises a file on the server was deleted, what do you want to do with the local copy. The options are to keep the local copy and save it to the server or delete the local copy as well.
This happens in both Windows 7 and Windows 10 and only occurs with Excel and with offline files enabled, word creates then renames the tmp file successfully. If redirected folders only then the file renames for Excel as well.
Please can people help me the best way to configure my Storage?
I hope someone can help,
I’m about to reinstall windows on my server and think that now may be a perfect time to ask for advice on how best to optimize my setup!
My Current Setup is:
- 2x Intel Xeon E5-2630 v4. Supermicro X10 DRL-i mobo, 32GB non ECC ram, Server 2016 DC
- 9 x WD20EFRX 2TB 5200rpm SATA Drives
- ASR-51645 Adaptec SAS/SATA RAID Controller (16 port)
My Current Data Usage is around 90% movies, 7% Files / zips exes etc, 3% pictures,
Its main duty is as a PLEX server for my family, and storage for all my media and family photos etc.
So, my questions is:
What is the best way to be storing all this data, is RAID the way or storage spaces or something else I’m not aware of?
Performance is a must too as it often must transcode 4K movies,
Any advice would be greatly appreciated I’m a noob with storage really...
Thanks!

Server 2016 FSRM Unable to Schedule, Add, Generate Storage Management Reports
Looking for some help. Trying to create a storage report in server 2016 fsrm and keep getting this error. Tried an uninstalll & reinstall reboot, no luck.
Ran this and it didn't help.

Search in folder shows results located in "Temporary Burn Folder" (SBS2011)
When I search from the server (SBS2011) inside a particular folder, the search results show the folder paths for the results as being located in a Temporary Burn Folder on the same drive instead of the actual folder path.
Example:
I search for a folder called "TEST" in D:\Data\Docs\IT Docs\Temp
The result shows the TEST folder as being located in D:\Data\Temporary Burn Folder\IT Docs\Temp
- It appears to happen on any search inside a particular shared folder (D:\Data\Docs).
- I'm not searching via the Share, but via the local folder on the server.
- This doesn't occur in other Shared folders on the server - the search results correctly display as being located in the respective folder.
- It doesn't matter if I logon to the server with another user account, this particular share still shows the same issue.
- If I search the shared folder from another computer, the folders are correctly identified in the network share.

CNAME to DFS name space
Hello Everyone,
I wanted to know if it's possible to achieve the following:
We have a cname contonso.microsoft.com who points to Fileserver1. All the shares and GPO's use that cname.
Currently we need to move 1 of the shares to another server Fileserver2.
We created a DFS namespace \\microsoft.com\contonso who contains Fileserver1 and Fileserver2.
Could we redirect contonso.microsoft.com to the DFS directly?
Of course all the shares will be re-created on the DFS too.
Thank You
Windows Server 2016 - DFS-R and DFS-N Roaming Profiles
Hi all, ive been reading the following article: - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/2533009/information-about-microsoft-support-policy-for-a-dfs-r-and-dfs-n-deplo . And this outlines a scenario in which MS doesn't support the use of DFS-R and DFS-N for roaming profiles.
Firstly, is this still valid for Server 2016, as it is a five year old article now? If it is still valid then I need to investigate other options for the scenario of:-
1) VDI users in two active site locations.
2) All VDI users have Roaming Profiles and also use Document Redirection.
3) Users profiles are as small as possible, due to policies in place to restrict their ability to do pretty much anything.
4) The Profiles share is separate to the Documents share, and this would be the same for Namespaces (i.e. there will be two separate shares/namespaces).
There will be around 200 users active in one site, and 100 active in the other. The WAN link between sites is 1Gbps, with latency around 1ms. We would like to be able to publish the Roaming Profile Namespace and also the Document Namespace, and use these in the updated GPO's for all users.
We need to provide Active/Active site resilience to allow either 'set' of users to fail-over to the other site in a DR situation, and for their Desktops/settings/documents to be fully available. The VDI environment is using VMWare.
Thanks for any help.
Phil
DFS Permission
Greetings,
I work for Microsoft Partner and i am in process of deploying DFS file server in customer side. I have some inquiries:
current setup:
Existing one file server (2012 R2) using normal sharing folder. Shared folders mapped manually on each user PC.
Scope:
install DFS on the same file server and install another DFS file server (2012 R2) for high availability.
My inquiry
I need to know steps needed to achieve the scope noting that existing file server have many shared folders using Server name UNC path.
I search over the internet deeply i found many blogs taking about File server migration tool, robocopy, xcopy but i am confused of the steps in sequence.

I am also element not found.
Any help would be appreciated.
Failover cluster / Storage Replica - disks fail when copying large data portions
I'm having a failover cluster with 2 servers. Both servers have 2 disks; 1 800GB for data and 1 20GB for logs. Of course these are GPT disks and I'm able to build a cluster and create a file server role.
I've used Storage Replica to replicate the 800GB disks. This works and I can host the file server role on both nodes in the cluster. I've created a share on the fileserver role and added some data to this share. No problems so far.
Now I want to copy more data to the fileserver role, but when doing to the replication will fail after having copied some GBs of data.
The event log of the cluster gives the following error:
Cluster resource '29382f4b-948c-4768-acc6-10fea296553a' of type 'Storage Replica' in clustered role 'SR Group 1' failed.
Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it. Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster
Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.
I can bring the disks online again and start the Storage Replica role, but I don't want it to fail.
In case someone wonders; I did run the "Validate Cluster..." wizard and I passed it.
Cannot Create DFS Namespace with error "Specified Server cannot perform the requested operation"
We are trying to configure new file server mirrors with DFS + DFSR on them and our existing file servers in our three environments. Sandbox-Dev-Live. All are under the same domain. I was able to successfully create a namespace from the "new" sandbox-FS02, \\domain.net\sbox\, and had no issues getting replication up and running and all was looking sunny and easy.
In "dev", however, things are not so easy. When attempting to create the \\domain.net\dev namespace, I receive an error error on both dev-fs01 and dev-fs02. For the sake of simplicity here I'm leaving everything default. Not changing anything with shared folder location, details, or path. The shared folder does not exist before creation. Default path of C:\DFSRRoots\Dev is being used. "All Users have Read-Only Permissions" is checked. Domain based, with 2008 mode checked.
The namespace in question has never been successfully created and there are no associated registry entries for the namespace on any DC.
The error in question is as follows:
"\\domain.net\dev: The namespace server \\dev-fs01 cannot be added. The specified server cannot perform the requested operation".
There is no associated EventViewer Log Error, on either file server or any domain controller within the domain.
I have done a lot of troubleshooting already in terms of network connectivity between the servers and the PDC, permissions, verifying NETLOGON shares, AD replication... out of ideas at this point. I can provide any (sanitized) information that is desired about the environment or the error.
