Please can people help me the best way to configure my Storage?

Hi all,
I hope someone can help,
I’m about to reinstall windows on my server and think that now may be a perfect time to ask for advice on how best to optimize my setup!
My Current Setup is:
- 2x Intel Xeon E5-2630 v4. Supermicro X10 DRL-i mobo, 32GB non ECC ram, Server 2016 DC
- 9 x WD20EFRX 2TB 5200rpm SATA Drives
- ASR-51645 Adaptec SAS/SATA RAID Controller (16 port)

My Current Data Usage is around 90% movies, 7% Files / zips exes etc, 3% pictures,

Its main duty is as a PLEX server for my family, and storage for all my media and family photos etc.

So, my questions is:
What is the best way to be storing all this data, is RAID the way or storage spaces or something else I’m not aware of?

Performance is a must too as it often must transcode 4K movies,

Any advice would be greatly appreciated I’m a noob with storage really...

Thanks!
Ash

Folder Redirection in DFS Namespace

I'm having hard time figuring this out.

I deployed a DFS Replication environment. Also I want to deploy folder redirection using gpo.

I want user's Desktop, Documents and Downloads redirected to the DFS

My configuration:

1. I created a security group named sgUserProfile. Then added users to the group

2. Under the shared folder ( target folder of DFS ) I created folder named User Profile. In that folder's security I added sgUserProfile with:

  1. Traverse Folder
  2. List Folder
  3. Read Attributes
  4. Read Extended Attributes
  5. Create folders

(Folder Structure is : Network_Share > User Profile)

3. I created a gpo for folder redirection.

When I login to the client pc. The user's username is created in the User Profile folder but the Desktop, Download and Documents where not redirected.

In which part of the configuration  I made mistakes?

Thanks in Advance.

DFS-N User Folders

If using Windows Server 2019 File Server Namespace is there a limitation to number of DFS namespace folders?

Is it typical to have a top-level shared folder on the File Server e.g. Users. as the folder target. A single DFS namespace link points to the single folder target. All users will be able to see all sub-folders in the share e.g. UserA, User B etc. but use NTFS permissions to restrict access.

Or can I hide the other users folders?

Or does it make sense to have thousands of shares (one per user), thousands of folder targets, thousands of namespace links?

1 VD / 4 Volumes - vs. - 4 VD / 1 Volume

Hi Experts, I will configure four additional volumes on my server. I installed a bunch of additional disks and now .....

What is the best way and why?

1. I configure one big [Storage Pool] and one big [Virtual Disk]. In that big VD, I create four Volumes.

or

2. I configure one big [Storage Pool] and four big [Virtual Disk]. In each of these four VD, I create a Volume.

The result looks the same, 4 volumes, but is it the same?

Thanks in advance.

Windows 10 Sync Center - Conflict office files creates a [filename]~xxxxxxx.tmp

Hi,

I'm being told to post here. Below is the link to the thread i posted:

I am in the midst of migrating all workstation to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 7 Pro. Our Domain Controller is also a File Server running on Windows 2012 R2. All staff's Desktop and My Documents are redirected to the file server \\servername\home$\%username%. Roaming profiles and offline files are enabled on all users. So far we have no issues with this setup for windows 7 users. However when tested on Windows 10 Pro machine, a weird behavior occurs.

Whenever a user edit and save an office file offline (at home), and connect back to the network (the following day), they will always get file sync conflict and .tmp file is created in that folder. See picture below.

When i check in the file server, the original file has been renamed to ~RFxxxxxxx.TMP suffix (or maybe the original file was deleted and then the .tmp file was created).

Because of this behavior, i am given 2 option to resolve this conflict. 1) Keep this version and copy it to the other location 2)Delete the version in both location. See below:

Of course i will choose option 1 which is to keep this version and copy it to the other location. Doing so, the latest copy of the file will be copied to the file server BUT the .tmp is still there. As such i have to manually delete the .tmp file.

Imagine doing this everyday for notebook users. It is quite annoying.

Any help will be appreciated.

Redirected folders - Excel creates .TMP files while word renames them

User creates an excel document and saves it to their documents folder, the file name is correct on the users device but on the server share it's named as XXXXXX.tmp where X is random numbers. If the user closes the document now the server file remains as the .TMP file. If the user makes additional changes and clicks save a 2nd file with the correct file name and excel extension appears on the server share while the original .tmp file remains as well.

If I perform a manual sync or log off\log on sync centre reports that all files are in sync, even if there is just a .tmp file not the correct file + the .tmp file

If there is the correct file + a .tmp file users can open the file and make edits and save and the correct file is updated not the .tmp file. If a user saves a file, closes it there is only a .tmp file on server. If they reopen it and then save a new .tmp file is created on the server while their correct file is updated.

If a user saves then closes only the .tmp resides on the server while locally the correct file exists, if I delete the .tmp file then sync centre advises there is a conflict after 24 hours. If it is less than 24 hours then nothing is reported and only the user has a copy of the file. After 24 hours sync centre advises a file on the server was deleted, what do you want to do with the local copy. The options are to keep the local copy and save it to the server or delete the local copy as well.

This happens in both Windows 7 and Windows 10 and only occurs with Excel, word creates then renames the tmp file successfully.

Issues with Multi-resilient volumes (Mirror-accelerated parity) in a regular (not S2D) Storage Spaces configuration.

Hello,

I'm trying to configure Multi-Resilient Volume (Mirror-Accelerated Parity) using "regular" Clustered Storage Spaces (not S2D) on Windows Server 2019. It is worth noting that I've tried the same scenario on Windows Server 2016 and got the same outcome. Also, it doesn't matter whether I use clustered or standalone Storage Spaces, the outcome is still the same.

My problem is that I'm unable to achieve storage efficiency higher than 50% for Multi-Resilient Volume, no matter what disk proportion I use in Performance and Capacity tiers.

Lab configuration:

2x Hyper-V VMs (OS: Windows Server 2019 DC)

10x VHD Sets (ex- Shared VHDx) placed on Cluster Shared Volume and attached to both VMs

I wanted to create a two-way mirror (2 disks) + single parity MRV (8 disks). Each disk is ~ 430GB.

Configuration steps:

#Creating new Pool
Get-PhysicalDisk -CanPool $true
New-StoragePool –FriendlyName MainPool –StorageSubsystemFriendlyName "Clustered Windows Storage*" –PhysicalDisks (Get-PhysicalDisk -CanPool $True)

#Setting up media types for tiering
Get-StoragePool -IsPrimordial $true | Get-PhysicalDisk -CanPool $true |Set-PhysicalDisk -MediaType HDD
Get-StoragePool -IsPrimordial $true | Get-PhysicalDisk -CanPool $true | select -skip 8 |Set-PhysicalDisk -MediaType SSD

#Configuring Capacity tier
New-StorageTier -MediaType HDD -StoragePoolFriendlyName MainPool -FriendlyName CapacityTier -ResiliencySettingName Parity -FaultDomainAwareness PhysicalDisk -PhysicalDiskRedundancy 1 -NumberOfColumns 8 -Interleave 65536
$CapacityTier = Get-StorageTier -FriendlyName CapacityTier

#Configuring Perfromance tier
New-StorageTier -MediaType SSD -StoragePoolFriendlyName MainPool -FriendlyName PerfromanceTier -ResiliencySettingName Mirror -FaultDomainAwareness PhysicalDisk -PhysicalDiskRedundancy 1 -NumberOfDataCopies 2 -NumberOfColumns 1 -Interleave 65536
$PerfromanceTier = Get-StorageTier -FriendlyName PerfromanceTier

#Creating Multi-Resilient Volume
New-Volume -StoragePoolFriendlyName MainPool -FriendlyName MRVolume -FileSystem ReFS -AccessPath "X:" -ProvisioningType Fixed -AllocationUnitSize 4KB -StorageTierFriendlyName PerfromanceTier, CapacityTier -StorageTierSizes 400GB, 600GB

Result:

Get-StorageTier reports that both Performance and Capacity tiers have their resiliency type configured as "Mirror", and both have 50% storage efficiency.I obviously expect Capacity (Parity) tier to have more than 50% efficiency.

It would be great to hear the official response regarding this matter.

Is MRV in non-S2D configuration allowed for production?

Why the capacity tier with resiliency type = "parity" reports itself as "mirror"?

Is there a "proper" way to create the mirror+parity MRV with the efficiency of more than 50%?

Powershell and ICACLs

Hello

I have been trying for days to get this right and it does not seem to be giving me what I need.

First off:  The powershell portion seems to be working properly.

It is the ICACLs that I can't seem to get the right results from.

I have a server that I am trying to apply inheritance and permissions to.

Here's my code:

cls
$svr="\\IT-TerryTest\UsersList"
$folders = get-childitem $Svr
$SvrParent = [string]::join("\",$Svr.Split("\")[2..2]) #Extracts the name of the server
foreach ($f in $folders) {
$user=$f.name
ICACLS ("$($f.FullName)") /Inheritance:e /Grant:r ("System" + ':(OI)(CI)F') /T
ICACLS ("$($f.FullName)") /Grant:r ("system" + ':(OI)(CI)F') #/T
ICACLS ("$($f.FullName)") /Inheritance:r /Inheritance:e /Grant:r ("cocl\DA_Admin" + ':(OI)(CI)(NP)F') /T
ICACLS ("$($f.FullName)") /Grant:r ("cocl\DA_Admin" + ':(OI)(CI)(NP)F')
ICACLS ("$($f.FullName)") /Inheritance:r /Inheritance:e /Grant:r ("cocl\Terry-Admin" + ':(OI)(CI)(NP)F') /T
ICACLS ("$($f.FullName)") /Grant:r ("cocl\Terry-Admin" + ':(OI)(CI)(NP)F')
ICACLS ("$($f.FullName)") /remove ($SvrParent + "\Users") /T
ICACLS ("$($f.FullName)") /remove ("Creator Owner") /T

}

What is not happening is that the subfolders are not getting inheritance from the parent folder.  The only folder that should not get inheritance is the top level folder. Here's what I get at a 4th level folder.

The top level folder is identical except the "Administrators" Account does not show up there.

I have tried shifting/removing/adding different permissions, but nothing seems to work.

Any suggestions?

Thank You

Terry

Cannot save excel file from 2012r2 server network share MS office

We have a shared drive on our 2012r2 server with a folder for our part-time staff's time cards in .xlsx.  We want to allow the users to access, edit, and save their timecards. We do not want them to be able to delete them though.  Until recently we were able to do this with USERS having read, write, execute, and their group PART-TIME USERS having delete permissions set to DENY.  This has now stopped working and users get "Document not Saved" error.  OS's affected 7,10 Office versions 2019,2016,2007 - (But oddly still works fine with Office 2002).

Is it possible to configure permissions to deny users the ability to delete file from our shared drive without hindering their ability to edit those file?

Work folders

I am having issues setting up work folders on a windows server 2012 R2 server. I got the feature installed but it will not allow the client to access the URL. I could easily get this working with a self sign certificate creating it via IIS but I need this to work using a root CA Certificate.

I have assigned a CA certificate for this server using SSL which is what is required and published it on the default IIS site and also tried to import it on the client workstation trusted root certificates  but that is not working. From what I have read, the certificate common name should be using workfolder?

Not sure exactly if I am doing something wrong but any suggestions or guidance how to get this to work using a domain Root CA would be great.

Hi folks,

I got a interesting problem that i hadn't seen before. Does anybody get the same problem and how to solve it ?

Since the virtual disk capacity is not enough to use , then i bought 16 Intel DC S3520 800GB SSD and plugged them into 4 nodes. The new added 16 SSD drives stuck in "Verification in progress" for a week, These disks can't be expanded into the storagepool. I google or baidu on internet, but it seems get fews of such posts and solution. Hope Microsoft or S2D fans can pull me out . Thanks in advance.

Below is the PS cmd show result:

DFS Permission

Greetings,

I work for Microsoft Partner and i am in process of deploying DFS file server in customer side. I have some inquiries:

current setup:

Existing one file server (2012 R2) using normal sharing folder. Shared folders mapped manually on each user PC.

Scope:

install DFS on the same file server and install another DFS file server (2012 R2) for high availability.

My inquiry

I need to know steps needed to achieve the scope noting that existing file server have many shared folders using Server name UNC path.

I search over the internet deeply i found many blogs taking about File server migration tool, robocopy, xcopy but i am confused of the steps in sequence.

CNAME to DFS name space

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to know if it's possible to achieve the following:

We have a cname contonso.microsoft.com who points to Fileserver1. All the shares and GPO's use that cname.

Currently we need to move 1 of the shares to another server Fileserver2.

We created a DFS namespace \\microsoft.com\contonso who contains Fileserver1 and Fileserver2.

Could we redirect contonso.microsoft.com to the DFS directly?

Of course all the shares will be re-created on the DFS too.

Thank You

Domain Controller asking for credentials when connecting to shared folder

Hi,

I have an AD domain and my clients have been joined to the domain. When domain users trying to connect shared folders they're being asked for credentials. They can successfully ping the domain controller with FQDN and IP address as well. All users have this problem. I haven't seen this odd issue before! I am a little bit confused. How can I overcome this problem?

Thanks

Unable to get NETLOGON and SYSVOL to replicate to newly promoted DC

I have been in the process of migrating servers but i cant seem to get the SYSVOL and NETLOGON to replicate. It has been stuck in the initial rep for about 2 weeks.

I have tried the authoritative/Non Authoritative replication per the KB doc, but it still will not replicate. At this point i cant even access the Group policy to make any changes to anything or update the VPN we use through the windows server. I have included my Dfsr debug log. Any help anyone can give would be super appreciated. I cant seem to see what the issue is.
