Enable Windows File share administration for IT Admin user
Hi - in one of my site Domain controller (windows 2008 R2) i have 2 IT admins serving as Account operators for that location domain administration with limited admin tasks in AD.
Also this server serves as file server for that location. Now when these local IT admins go to any folder and try to share, it says your administrator has blocked Windows file sharing from opening. It requires elevation.
Also they are not able to open any MMC snapin like FSRM with their credentials. If i provide Domain Admin privilege to these users, they are able to do these above tasks.
They are already in Server operators group but still not able to access.
How to provide limited server administrator access to certain IT People for a DC?>
Any help.

Microsoft DFS Folder Access Issue
Hi,
We are planning to migrate Standalone DFS in Windows 2003 with Cluster Environment to Windows 2016 Cluster Environment.
We found in Windows 2003 DFS is configured like \\DFSNameSpace\Shared Folder\DFS links with Targets. But we can access Shared folder or links by \\DFSNameSpace\\DFS links.
After Configuring Windows Failover Cluster in Windows 2016 - We can only able to access Shared folder by \\DFSNameSpace\Shared Folder\DFS link not directly \\DFSNameSpace\\DFS links like windows 2003.
Users Drive mapped through AD logon Script like \\DFSNameSpace [Server name]\\DFS links [Shared Folder] but
UNC Path in windows 2016 for accessing DFS is \\DFSNameSpace\Shared Folder\DFS links - is this way designed to access ?

Naveen.
DFS setup between servers.
hi,
I have 4 servers. say A/B and C/D
there is replication setup with replication group to sync folder e.g "root" folder between A & B, "testshare" folder between C & D.
so A/B servers are separate and C/D servers are separate , each having its own replication group.
on each servers there is no namespace created. folder synching is working good. no problems.
there is sub folder inside root which is part of replication group e.g E:\root\test\test1\test3. on server A and B.
now I want to share "test3" subfolder between all 4 servers.
also there is sub folder inside test e.g F:\testshare\subfolder1\subfolder2 on C and D.
now I want to share "subfolder2" between 4 servers.
both test3 (in A/B) and subfolder2 (in C/D) have different contents. I want to these subfolders between 4 servers under a common share name say "commonsharefolder" with contents sync.
how will I do that,
i think, I need namespace under DFS. and replication group with 4 servers?
i can add 4 servers in group however in next wizard when adding target folder, it gave error, saying test3 already part of replication group. so how will i add two different subfolders with common share name.
Deduplication status incorrect in server manager
Hi!
I have a 2-node Windows Server 2016 failover cluster set up as a file server.
Disks are SAN LUNS mapped as raw devices to the vmware virtual machine.
We have configured data deduplication on the volumes and it seems to work since we have gotten more free capacity on the volumes.
However, when looking in the server manager GUI it most of the time shows no deduplication status at all, and when clicking configure data deduplication the setting is shown as disabled. (The dedup information is visible there occasionaly, but it seems completely random if it shows it at all).
But when running the powershell command Get-DedupVolume it correctly displays the status and dedup beeing enabled.
(I was hoping to be able to post screenshots of server manager but for some reason I get the message that my account is not verified and no information on how to verify it). But I can at least post the output of the PS command.
PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-DedupVolume
------- --------- ---------- ----------- ----
True Default 1.36 TB 47 % G:
True Default 3.47 TB 28 % E:
True Default 1.52 TB 38 % F:
Anyone else got this problem with server manager? Is there a workaround?
Kind of annoying not to be able to trust the information shown. (I assume that PS is correct in this case).

FSRM and Quota's showing incorrect values
Hi,
I have set up folder quota's, and on one folder I have set it to 100GB. This Quota shows as 99% used, but the actual folder in Explorer shows only as 28GB used. What am I missing, or set up wrong, or is there a fix that needs to be applied? (I don't think my maths is that bad as I am pretty sure 28 is not 99% of 100.)
Can anyone help or point me in the right direction.
Thanks!
Ben
shared folder access
I have shared folder by name MyCompData
MyCompData-SharedFolder with Everyone-Read & Write Access
Inside MyCompData sharedFolder i have Folder1, inside Folder1 i have Folder2,inside Folder2 i have Folder3, inside Folder3 i have Folder4
MyCompData-Folder1-Folder2-Folder3-Folder4
MyCompData-inheritanceDisabled
Folder1--inheritanceDisabled
Folder2--inheritanceDisabled
Folder3--inheritanceDisabled

i need to give Read Access to user on Folder 4, so if i give just Read Access on Folder4 will it work for me.
minimum privilege needed to read folder audit trail
what are the minimum privileges need to view the audit trail of shared folders? (e.g. user x read folder, user y modified file , etc)
Robocopy / File Synchronization Tool detecting changes live
Hi guys
I'm using robocopy to mirror data from one fileserver lun to another lun on my server (local). It works pretty well with robocopy. The only thing is, that even if there are only small difference between the lun's, the copyjob last between 5-6 hours because it's scanning and comparing these two luns to another. We're talking about 14 TB data on each server lun.
I'm looking for a file synchronization tool, which is running all the time in the background and detects changes on the fileshare live and list them up and I can later on simply sync the two lun's. I want so safe time.
What do you guys can recommend?
File shares, previous versions, shadow copy
Hi there,
Sorry for my bad english.
I'm looking for informations about this function.
I have a windows server 2016 file server, with a specific drive for storing datas (say d:) and a specific drive for storing previous versions of files (say z:).
I can't find anywhere technical information about this, my questions are :
- When I put a file on data d:, and the "previous version" schedule run, does this copy the entire content of this new file to z: ?
- If yes, does this get compressed ? Because I did some tests on empty drives, and say with 6GB on data disk d:, I get approx 2GB of disk usage on z:
- If I select no limit for drive usage for previous versions, how is working the cleanup process when z: gets full ? Older snapshots are removed ?
Thanks for infos

DFSR and snapshot compatibility with Windows 2012 R2
I see help article 2517913 says snapshots are not allowed on Read-write members. (The title of the article is: Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) no longer replicates files after restoring a virtualized server's snapshot)
The article seems to be for Windows 2008 R2. Does this recommendation still apply with 2012 R2?
How block opening doc files like word & excell?
I recently configured a small File Server for our small office on a PC based on Windows Server 2012R2.
I need to use this PC just as a File Archive nothing else so, I customized this configuration, not to run or lunch files such as application OR word & excel docs but, User can open their documents like word & excel and can't lunch application.
Hence I need to block opening doc files, especially word & excel.
so, I need your offer, how can I do this mission?
Thanks in Advance
Drive Slot Numbering Storage Spaces
I am setting up storage spaces on a single server, 2 Tiers 4xNVMe SSD, 32xHDD on Server 2016. The HBA controller/motherboard/Windows server 2016 desktop experience combination seems to support slot numbering.
The problem I am having is when I remove a drive from say "slot 5", and insert it into a slot that numbered a previous drive in that slot "slot 11", the drive from slot 5 stays as "slot 5" in server
manager>file and storage services>storage pools>physical disk. The slot numbering moves with the drive.
With the same HBA SAS controller on another build with a different motherboard the slot numbering changes according to location of the slot on the backplane. So if I have a failed drive on "slot 5", it is the drive on slot 5, not 11. I installed avago Megaraid, thought the adapter is non-RAID HBA and the drives transfer slot numbers as expected within their web interface. Is there a command, setting, or driver for storage spaces to make sure my slot numbering that I physically label onto the case of the server stays accurate when hot plugging/replacing a failed drive?
iSCSI not initially reconnecting after reboot.
Running server 2016.
I have an ISCSI target that this server connects to. After a reboot, the drives do not automatically reconnect. If I disconnect them in ISCSI then reconnect, they appear fine.
When the system comes up the iSCSI init properties Target tab says it is connected. The Volumes and Devices tab has 2 long strings that should be G:\ and H:\. I click Auto Configure and the strings go away. After I disconnect and reconnect, the drives show correctly in the Volumes and Devices tab.
I cannot find anything in the event viewer that would point to what could cause this issue but I could be looking in the wrong place too.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Charles
How to create storage space with cache on SSD?
I have Windows 2016 Storage space cluster with JBOD 12x6TB HDD drives. I also have 2 SSD 400GB. All are SAS drives. I can crate Mirror volume with HDD but I want to use cache on SSD without tier. I want to use SSD for tier with other HDD at the same time. If there is article with powershell script, please point out to me.
Thanks,
DFS NetBIOS VS FQDN
Hello,
We have been on Windows 7 x64 for a while now. There has never been issues with DFS. \\Domain\Namespace vs \\DomainFQDN\Namespace always worked the same without issue.
We have started the testing process of Windows 10 and noticed that randomly \\Domain\ will not work and prompts for a password vs \\domainFQDN works without issue.
Same happens for \\Domain\Netlogon vs \\DomainFQND\Netlogon.
I have seen a lot through my research of this that first I should be upgrading the DFS to at least 2008, along with setting the DFS to always use the FQDN for referrals.
Is this by design with Windows 10 and it now accessing DFS differently to Windows 10 or am I missing a setting somewhere one Windows 10 that can correct this?

Shared drive transfer from Server 2008 to Server 2016
What would the best way to transfer a Shared drive on our legacy 2008 server to our new Server 2016? I saw there is a migration tool, that will copy files and permissions. What is the best way to re-map the drive to the new location?
//server-2008/sharedDrive
to
//server-2016/sharedDrive
Thanks,
Chris
DFS Event ID 4412 says File was changed on multiple servers, but it was not changed on replica server
I have 2 servers set up for DFS Replication. ServerA (Windows 2016 Standard) replicates to ServerB (Windows 2016 Datacenter). ServerA is our production server, where users access files. ServerB is in my DR site, and no one EVER accesses these files directly. The Folder Targets for ServerB in the namespace folders for these rep groups are Disabled
- Why does DFS Replication detect files changed on multiple servers, when files are only changed ServerA, and NEVER on ServerB?
- How to determine which is the losing file? I can “assume” it is the file on ServerB because the drive letter is E:; on ServerA the drive letter is D:
- Further confusing things: the event refers to the “Replicated Folder Name,” but in most terminology I have seen, this would be ServerA; ServerB would be “Replica.” Am I misinterpreting this?
