Replicated DFS with DFS folders

Hi,

I'm running into an issue which I hope to explain below.

We have an HQ and several branch offices that need rapid file access for certain applications.
The most common files are in several folder that are replicated between the offices.
One folder has specific project information that is used by the branch offices

This one folder is a DFS folder, underneath this folder are 200+ folder links. Every project folder is located on the local file server on the branch office that is used in.
These folders are not replicated as the common folders, because they share the files and multiple (traveling) people will have multiple files open.

When this files is replicated this sharing and the same file open by multiple people doesn't work. When accessing the fileshare on the central location everything is fine.
But when the share is opened from a branch office and it connects to the namespace server in the office, the project folder is empty

Hello

I have a 2008 r2 server (RDPServer) that cannot access any shares from a 2003 server.

Other servers are able to access the 2003 server shares.

The only error is simply "The server cannot perform the requested operation".

I can ping the 2003 server from the RDPServer.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jason

File shares, previous versions, shadow copy

Hi there,

Sorry for my bad english.

I'm looking for informations about this function.

I have a windows server 2016 file server, with a specific drive for storing datas (say d:) and a specific drive for storing previous versions of files (say z:).

I can't find anywhere technical information about this, my questions are :

  1. When I put a file on data d:, and the "previous version" schedule run, does this copy the entire content of this new file to z: ?
  2. If yes, does this get compressed ? Because I did some tests on empty drives, and say with 6GB on data disk d:, I get approx 2GB of disk usage on z:
  3. If I select no limit for drive usage for previous versions, how is working the cleanup process when z: gets full ? Older snapshots are removed ?

Thanks for infos

document folder redirection fails on user share permissions

Hi,

SITUATION
Windows 2012 file server
AD preferences drive maps the share \srv\shr\%usernam% to drive letter U
we just setup AD folder redirection for documents only
settings are: grant userexcl rights YES, Move contents YES, Policy for w2k, XP etc NO, primary PC evaluation (NOT EVELUATED)

PROBLEM
users documents are not moved
In eventviewer we see errors that the folder \nameofUser\ could not be created... but those folders already exist and are used under the U: drive...

ERROR MESSAGE:

Failed to apply policy and redirect folder "Documents" to "\\srv03\users$\fre".
 Redirection options=0x1211.
The following error occurred: "Can't create folder "\\srv03\users$\fre"".
Error details: "This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object.
".

ACTION TAKEN
Created a new desktop and user. and there we do see all the testdocs we made in 'documents' being moved to U: drive

Shared drive transfer from Server 2008 to Server 2016

What would the best way to transfer a Shared drive on our legacy 2008 server to our new Server 2016? I saw there is a migration tool, that will copy files and permissions. What is the best way to re-map the drive to the new location?

//server-2008/sharedDrive

to

//server-2016/sharedDrive

Thanks,

Microsoft DFS Folder Access Issue

We are planning to migrate Standalone DFS in Windows 2003 with Cluster Environment to Windows 2016 Cluster Environment.

We found in Windows 2003 DFS is configured like \\DFSNameSpace\Shared Folder\Shares with Targets. But we can access Shared folder by UNC Path \\DFSNameSpace\\Shares.

After Configuring Windows Fail over Cluster in Windows 2016 - We can only able to access Shared folder by UNC Path \\DFSNameSpace\Shared Folder\Shares not directly \\DFSNameSpace\\Shares like windows 2003.

Users Drive mapped through AD logon Script like \\DFSNameSpace [Server name]\\Shares  but UNC Path in windows 2016 for accessing DFS is \\DFSNameSpace\Shared Folder\Shares- is this way designed to access ?

Shadow Copy on separate storage best practice

$

Hi,

I have several questions regarding shadow copy that I haven't been able to find too many answers on so was wondering if someone can help clarify. I have a clustered server FS1 and FS2 that I want to enable shadow copy on. As a file server, I've seen shadow copies disappear due to high I/O so I want to put the shadow copies on a separate drive. This was also stated in the best practice for cluster servers. So here's my questions:

1. According to: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/dd364933(v=ws.10)

Do not store the volume shadow copy storage area on a storage device that may not be available to Windows until late in the system startup sequence. For example, a logical unit number (LUN) created on an Internet SCSI (iSCSI) storage subsystem might not appear until a software initiator has started.

What are the alternatives if not using iSCSI (it's weird that they would expect to use a local drive) or was there an update that changed this?

2. Should a separate LUN/volume need to be assigned a drive space letter to hold the shadow copy? I don't want other people to know that there's a separate shadow copy drive.

3. If I had multiple LUNs assigned to a server, should I put all the shadow copies in one separate large storage or lots of smaller ones for each LUN? If one large storage, would it be a single point of failure? But if it's the latter, and need to assign drive space letter, wouldn't it look really messy?

Thanks!

multiple workstations using mapped directories to server.

Hi,

How many workstations ( Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows XP ) can simultaneously  use mapped drives to a Windows server and have open files for read and write on those mapped drives (\\server\cdrive  ) F:

All my searches refer to simultaneous mapping of Remote Desktop, which I do not care.

Problem with windows explorer and network drive

Hi !

We have Hyper-V Windows 2016 server with some virtual servers (in domain). One from these virtual servers is backup server where we have Veeam Backup. Together with this server we have Synology DS916+(homegroup). Everything together work great, to one day, something went wrong and from that day we didn´t see Synology on network via windows explorer, but ping works, and open synology management via web browser works. Something what is interesting, connect to shared folders from local computer in the same network works (win 10). Connect to shared folders (synology) no works only from server ( Hyper-V and any virtual server). Veeam didn´t see synology ,too.

When we want connect to synology by virtual server, it come with error : "Windows cannot access \\ (synology name / IP address) Error code : 0x80004005 or 0x80070035

but when we want connect from Hyper V error is: "The semaphore timeout period has expired"

We try a lot of "solutions" but not works.

I am ready reply to your all questions.

Sorry for my bad english and thanks for all answers.

Hi Guys

Would the NTFS permissions be maintained???

Any other concerns I should be aware off

Network Error: Windows cannot access to \\10.2.0.12. Please contact your network administrator.

Before install Sophos Central Endpoint, user able to access the shared folder (\\10.2.0.12). After install with Sophos Central Endpoint, user cannot access the shared folder (\\10.2.0.12).

We suspect the issue from Sophos Central Endpoint, so we uninstall and remove all Sophos components from the server and reboot it. However, we still receive the same error message.

We have set firewall any to any and check the network all are working fine. We have escalate this issue to Sophos Support, during their remote session on the server, found the issue is not related to Sophos Central Endpoint.

Please advise. Thank you.

Windows 10 User cannot delete files

We have a folder called "Technical". This is a shared folder on Windows 2012 STD R2 Server.

3 Users have full access to this folder.

User01 - Dell Laptop
User02 - Lenovo Laptop
User03 - MS Surface PRO

The issues is, User03 cannot delete a folder of file. A pop up window comes up with a file is in use etc. We have checked and confirm no files exist in the folder. At the same moment when User01 and/or User02 deletes the same file/folder it deletes immediately.

All users have the same version of Windows 10 Professional - MS Windows Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.228)

Any ideas why this could be an issue with just one user.

DFS setup between servers.

hi,

I have 4 servers. say A/B  and C/D

there is replication setup with replication group to sync folder e.g "root" folder between A & B,  "testshare" folder between C & D.

so A/B servers are separate and C/D servers are separate , each having its own replication group.

on each servers there is no namespace created. folder synching is working good. no problems.

there is sub folder inside root which is part of replication group e.g E:\root\test\test1\test3. on server A and B.

now I want to share "test3" subfolder between all 4 servers.

also there is sub folder inside test e.g F:\testshare\subfolder1\subfolder2 on C and D.

now I want to share "subfolder2" between 4 servers.

both test3 (in A/B) and subfolder2 (in C/D) have different contents.  I want to these subfolders between 4 servers under a common share name say "commonsharefolder" with contents sync.

how will I do that,

i think, I need namespace under DFS. and replication group with 4 servers?

i can add 4 servers in group however in next wizard when adding target folder, it gave error, saying test3 already part of replication group. so how will i add two different subfolders with common share name.
