Windows System error 53

Carina is a Windows 10 (Build 14986) Thinkpad connected to a small domain of about 20 desktops and 3 servers. One of the servers (phoenix) is a Windows 2012 R2 running file and print services, WSUS as well as a SQL Server Express instance. All, except one, of the other desktops are running Windows 7 SP1, the exception being a Windows 8.1 laptop. One of the remaining servers (centaurus) is running Samba Active Directory and CIFS as well as other services. The last server is irrelevant to this discussion.

All the desktops can see the shares on the Samba Server (centaurus). All the desktops except Carina can see the shares on the 2012R2 server (phoenix). _Only_ carina _cannot_ see the shares or the printers on phoenix. It persistently receives a System Error 53.

- Carina was upgraded in place to Windows 10 from Windows 7 SP1 (and several times to insider previews of Windows 10). It is the desktop from which I do all the administrative work for this network. It is certain that when that computer was running Win7, it had access to the shares of the 2012R2 server. Had to, because there is program installed on it that could only have been installed from a specific share on that server. However, it's a line of business software that I do not use. It's there for the rare cases when I have to do some maintenance or debugging work on it.

- It did take me a while to realize that there was a problem. In every other respect that counts, I had access to the 2012R2 server. Specifically, remote administration works; remote desktop access works. And no one was complaining about access to shares or to SQL Server.

- I have zero problems with DNS. Unless both Linux servers break down, DNS is not going to be a problem.

- nbtstat -a phoenix lists the netbios names for the 2012R2 server.

- The net view command does list the 2012R2 server. But net view \\phoenix outputs the System Error 53 message.

- It turns out that it does the same thing for several other targets on the same network. E.g. error on say, gemini, but no problem on say musca. Since all the computers have similar configuration (they are all built from the same image) and they get their settings from Group Policy, there are no obvious differences between them. And I do not think it's random. Over several days, it's always the same computers that are accessible and the same ones that are not.

- Users do not have admin privileges so they cannot change settings.

- I have done some research. This error 53 seems to be a popular error. I have not found a single instance of a solution, much less an explanation.

- Windows internal troubleshooter is also stumped. It sees the server, but cannot "communicate" with it.

- So I put the shark on it and the shark sees no traffic from or to port 445 of the 2012R2 server but does see that traffic from to port 445 of the Samba Server when the net view \\<server name> command is issued.

That's the end of my rope at this time.

As soon as possible, I plan to try a clean install of Windows 10 in order to at least be sure that it _is_ not a Windows 10 issue. There are plans for replacing all the desktops this year so we have to be sure.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Troubleshooting performance issues - SOFS

I have been using a SOFS cluster for around 6 months now with no issues, however recently we have started getting some issues with a few of our servers. They seem sluggish and when i look at the disk performance in the task manager the average response time can range from 4ms to 2000ms.  I am pretty sure this is causing our exchange server queue to time out and pause, which i am having to resume myself.

Our cluster is 2 servers (no performance issues) and 3 sans all configured in to 1 CVS which is then presented to our blades as it hosts the vhdx's (currently 9 running 2 hyper-v each)

I opened perfmon on my cluster server that is set as the owner node and added the physical disk and can see the below.

Average Disk Queue Length - Max 16 - Average 4

Split I/O per sec - Max 148 - Average 27

Average Disk Sec Trans - Max - .060 Average - 0.011

Disk Reads - Max 103,411,000 - Average 17,000,000

Disk Writes - Max 75,000,000 - Average 24,000,000

The sans are built with 2 SSD's each and 10 10k 1tb hard drives each.  We use an SSD tier operating in a mirror and a normal tier operating similar to raid 5.

All traffic goes over a dedicated 10gb line just for the storage and their seems to be no issue with that.

If anyone has any advice on best to troubleshoot the issue or what could be causing this please let me know.

File Server Resource Manager - File screens - Send mail with ALL blocked files

$

Hello Technet,

I am trying to figure out how File Server Resource manager can send an e-mail to a user who tries to store disallowed file extentions on his user Profile. The 'block the file and send an e-mail' part is easy, but I need the e-mail to contain All the files that are blocked, instead of one e-mail per blocked file. This doesn't seem to be a default option in the GUI but I am wondering if it is at all possible, or how else we can archieve this.

The reason i'm asking this is because we want users to be able to store files on the desktop, but do not wish certain files to 'roam', however: we want to warn the user that these files aren't synchronised and advice them to store the files elsewhere.

thanks in advanced,

Windows Search missing files when searching from parent but not subfolder

$

We have recently moved a file server from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 and are experience very bad Windows Search results. I have Windows Search installed on the file server and have indexed the contents (over 1 million files). What I have found is if I search for our specific test file in the parent directory it will not return all the results. For example we search "withdraw" and it missing things like "withdraw v3", "withdraw v2", and other variations.

However if I go into a subfolder that the file may be in (or within child folders of that subfolder) then it finds it. Some of these files I am talking about could be 6 levels deep on the file system.

I have already tried rebuilding the index and third party search tools find it without any issues. Is there some sort of limitation I am not aware about?

The server is 2012 R2 and the workstations are Windows 7 Pro. We do use DFS but I have tried mapping a drive to the share directly and it does the same.

Deduplication error 60% or more of my media files, have Data missing resulting in files that cannot be read

Working with photographs videos in server 2012 storage pool where the duplication is configured. I have not had any problems for several years, until recently. Over 60% of my media library is affected by this data loss.

When attempting to open a  I received this with the standard JPEG file, photograph I get the following errors:

from Adobe Photoshop, Bridge and LightRoom

Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document.

The file appears to be unsupported or damaged.

The file could not be read.

Is there a way to get the data that was "Saved" by the duplication to reconnect to those files ?

However nothing in the system shows that there's a problem other than the fact that the files are not readable.
I will really appreciate any thoughts or ideas as to the best way to get this resolved.
Thank you for your help

What rights are needed to set file auditing on the files and folders

$

Hi everybody,

I am trying to set auditing for our file servers, but some of our folders are restricted and the standard Administrators account does not have access, for instance HR and some Corporate Strategy folders. We want to configure an account that has rights to set the auditing on these folders, but no permissions to read the data.

I have experimented with giving the account a combination of 'Change Permissions', 'Read Permissions', 'Write Attributes' and 'Write extended attributes' - but even with all these permissions the folder will not inherit audit permissions.

In order to set Auditing permissions on files on folders, is the only way for the account to have Full Control on the folder?

Additional note: The account I am using to set the auditing ACLs is a member of the local Administrators group, which in turn has the 'Manage auditing and security log' right in User Rights Assignment.

Regards,

Michael

Adding new member to existing DFS replication group

I have an existing Domain Namespace with several folder targets located on multiple servers.  I would like to add a 3rd member to a the replication group for the target "pumpkin". If "pumpkin" already exists, and is replicating on servers A and B, how can I add this folder target to server C such that the data from A and B is replicated to C, as it is currently empty.

Do I have to add server C as a New Member in the replication group, or do I need to do something else?  I have already created the share structure, and added the new target in DFS (disabled).

I am also concerned that the group will see "blank" as the new state for "pumpkin" and erase the existing data I have in the replication group.  This would be a disaster.  Is there anything that needs to be done to prevent this?

Work Folders - Server as Work Folder Client

I'm using Server 2016 as my workstation OS / Test / Lab but wanted to know if there is a way to install the client portion of work folders so I can sync to another server that is hosting the actual work folder / file server role.

Windows server 2012 explorer shows wrong free disk space

I have a VM for Windows server 2012 which has an additional disk of 120 GB. This has been kept for storing Oracle data. I got alert saying low disk pace on this. When I checked folders under the drive, occupies only 19 GB, but explorer shows only free 6.11 GB. I enabled hidden files, but nothing there. I cleaned recycle bin under that drive as well, but no difference. Recycle bin had only few folders. I tried "extend volume", chkdsk, optimization,  but nothing helped.

Any lights on this will be appreciated.

Windows Server 2016 Storage Spaces Tier ReFS

Tier optimization task of ReFS volume is not working in Windows Server 2016.

Application log:

The volume Vol_Tier2 (G:) was not optimized because an error was encountered: The operation requested is not supported by the hardware backing the volume. (0x8900002A)

If I format this volume to NTFS everything works fine. Had no such problem in Server 2012 R2.

Guess defrag.exe is not working with new ReFS v3.1

"No mapping between account names and security IDs was done" while using NET SHARE

Hello,

I am using NET SHARE to create file shares on a W1K12R2 server and getting the subject message with a component of the command.  Command goes like this:

NET SHARE Engineering=E:\Data\Engineering /GRANT:"DOMAIN\GroupName with one space,CHANGE" /GRANT:"DOMAIN\GroupName with two spaces,READ" /GRANT:HOSTNAME\Administrators,FULL

My issue is that the command works fine if I do not put in the /GRANT:"DOMAIN\GroupName with two spaces,READ" parameter.  With it I get:

System error 1332 has occurred.
No mapping between account names and security IDs was done.

My head is highly scratched.  Using Power Shell and New-SMBShare gives the same result.

------ HELP - HELP - HELP ------- User can't access shared files ------ EMERGENCY

Hello Everyone,

This is very URGENT, please HELP when you read this message.

I had 3 Domain Controller: 2012 Primary, 2012 Secondary, 2003 secondary

The 2003 DC is also a file sharing server.

During the rename process, for some reason,  I "Deleted" 2003 DC  out of DC roles.

After the migration completed, all servers/workstation are able to see and login to new Domain Name.  The only server that NOT login to new domain name is 2003 DC/FILEsharing

As of now, the old 2003DC/Filesharing still has permission set from old domain name which is "MAF1"

The problems I had now is some users start loosing the access permission to the file sharing.

How do I connect this old DC/Filesharing to new Domain name with all the share permission from new domain.

Please help as I need to fix this ASAP.

Thanks inadvance

2016 Storage Spaces pool free space calculation changed?

$

Do the updates in Storage Spaces 2016 change how free space of a pool is calculated?

I updated a 2012 R2 server with storage pool that has some disks marked as retired in it.  The pool was showing ~7TB free space under 2012 R2.  I upgraded the server to 2016, and then added a new 4TB disk to the pool. There have been no other changes, but the pool now says I have 6.2 TB free.  I'm not clear how I added a disk and have less free space unless the calculation has changed.

Thanks

ISCSI LUNs as a storage pool in Windows Server 2012

$

Hello

I'm not sure if this is the right forum category, but I'll try.
In Microsoft technical papers we can find, that ISCSI is not supported for a storage spaces technology. But I've created a storage pool, and then a virtual disc, where one "node" of a storage pool is connected as an ISCSI LUN from my NAS. Then I have tried every kind of operation and disaster recovery and everything works very well.

My NAS is QNAP TS 1280 which is Windows 2012 certified.

So, what should I think about that ? What does "ISCSI is not supported" exactly mean ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

File and Storage Services Share Names Not Uppercase

I've created a SMB-Quick Share from my file sharing server which has the folder name in all uppercase letters, the share name is in all uppercase letters, and even the path name I gave in all uppercase letters but when I go to the network share the shared folders name is all lowercase.

How can I get the shared folders name to display uppercase?

Hello,

I'm interesting in installing new DFS 2016 server for testing purposes.

I want to install it in domain production enviroment.

is there are any risk by doing it ?

my question is if there are any risks by doing it in production environment, like schema extensions or any AD integration?

and if there will be any problem to remove it after the tests?

my goal is to make some shares and map them to clients.

should I choose "Domain-based Namespace (Windows Server 2008 Mode)" ?

Thanks In Advance,

Ariel.
