DFS Replication takes forever

I've tried to get replication up and running for a few weeks now but I'm starting to loose my patience. I have two WDS-servers with rought 1TB of data that I want replicated from the main office to branch offices (currently one branch). It generally works great with test files (10mb files, text-files etc), but when it comes to bigger files, it just doesn't seem to do it.

The folder I replicate is \Remoteinstall\Images, and all files will replicate, except the .RWM files that are of size 20GB and up each. Acording to "dfsrdiag replicationstate" it is downloading files, but with my latest test (see below) I only replicate a folder which is 18GB in size. With my bandwidth schedule limited to 16Mbps/minut I get the behaiviour below, which is downloading @ around 15Mbps for a few seconds (~3), then taking a pause roughly double in length. This gives me an effective bandwith ~5Mbps. I calculated that at an effective rate @ 5Mbps, I should have the 18GB file replicated roughly in 8 hours. However, after 2 days (48 hours), the still isn't replicated!

My staging folder size is set to 2TB and the cpu-usage on the server is low. RDC-compression is on. Acording to your experiences, is this 1/3 effective bandwidth normal? What am I doing wrong?

access denied to freshly added drive

Hi,

Newbie question:

I added a disk to a 2008R2 server (vmware based).  Server in question is entered into a domain.

After formatting the disk I try to access the assigned drive letter. Getting access denied.

Any tool I could find says I have proper permissions. Subinacl doesn't change anything if I tell it to grant administrator full access.

After some registry settings, I can net use z: \\<own server>\F$

however, after that, a simple z:<enter> at cmd prompt gives access denied.

I'm quite stumped out here? What causes this?

Share & Storage management gives a red x through the drive, can't do anything with it there.

Attaching the drive to a different system in the same domain: same problem.

As a last resort, I even tried relocating the disk to a non-domain server. There I can access the disk without problem!

What is the proper way to get this unruly disk back in business?

Thanks!

Access Based Enumeration Confusion

Hi All,

Firstly let me apologise for the novel that is about to be written.

My environment is Windows Server 2012 (DFL is 2008) and a lot larger than shown in the images below but it demonstrates the depth I wish to use.

I am somewhat confused over how to apply permissions with ABE. This is NOT in a DFS name space. I have a share called "Data" with ABE enabled.  I have set up the folders as shown in the diagram below.

The logical flow should look like this:

I would like users to only see the folders that they have permissions for e.g. the North team should only see the North Folder but the Marketing Manager should be able to see all folders below their level. I can easily get the GM to see whichever folders they need to see (the GM, all Sales and all Geo folders and sub folders). The problem I am having is getting anyone further down the tree to see only the folders they have permissions to.

Is this possible or have I misunderstood how ABE works? Do I have to go to a flat file structure below Data (which I know will work but does not allow for inheriting?

TIA

Harry

rmdir DFSR /s?

Hi All

This is my first time posting. Would like to know exactly what the following command does:

rmdir DFSR /s

As far as I know rmdir /s will remove the specified directory and all subdirectories including any files. Not sure what the DFSR part does.

I'm having DFS replication issues "Error: 9098 (A tombstoned content set deletion has been scheduled)" and all the solutions online mention running rmdir DFSR /s as part of there instructions. I just want to make sure that it won't delete all my data.

We are running DFS on Storage Server 2003 and we want to replicate data onto a new server (Storage Server 2012)

I have been at this for about 2 weeks trying to fix it searching the internet and trying everything. I am of course willing to start from scratch and try everything again with guidence from this forum.

Not able to edit local Intranet web pages

$

We are an educational environment and each of our buildings has a local Intranet page stored on a network drive (L:\Apps\Intranet\Index.html).  The schools use these pages as a home page for their Internet browsers.  The Intranet pages serve as a jump-off point for Internet sites.

The problem we are having is that the Intranet sites become "locked" open after a certain number of days.  I will get a report that a school IT person will be attempting to modify the Intranet page but an error is thrown "access denied." I have checked to see that no users have the file open and I have even go so far as to stop sharing the file on the network.  The only resolution I have found is to reboot the server.

Constantly rebooting servers has become a real pain..

Any suggestions?

DFS Event ID 5014

Hello,

Operating environment: Server 2008R2

I keep getting Event ID's 5014 every time DFS tried to replicate between two servers, I have DFS set up between two file servers and two different replication groups between the two servers, bot of them fail with the event id 5014.

It has been working fine for over a month and all of a sudden it stopped working. My network is ok and it hasn't changed from day one.

Anyone got any advice, I tried a registry fix but that didn't work.

Thanks,

Sean

Hi,

I have a 2003 windows server and there is a problems on it that I can't access any shared folder on the network, when I try to access any shared folder I got this error message "a device attached to the system is not functioning" so how I can know which device made this error and in the same server there is another problem which I can't access the internet or another application can access the internet.

NOTE: I can access the server using RDP and I can ping the local host and I can ping my gateway.

Can't use unallocated space

Good day,

I have a scenario where we just installed Server 2012 with a RAID 5 configuration. We have 3 2TB drives. The OS was installed on a 2TB partition as it cannot install on any larger. Now I have a 3.5TB unallocated partition that I want to convert to GPT partition to be able to use it.

The problem comes in when I right click on the unallocated partition all options are "greyed out" and the only thing I can click is on properties.

Can someone please help me to convert this partition to GPT so I can use it?

Thanks

Network Load Balancing cluster for DFSR hub servers?

$

I have one DFSR hub server with about 80 connections to 80 remote offices.

I want to add another hub server for load balancing and redundancy, but I don't want to split the connections between the two hub servers. I don't like the idea of having to maintain\administer two different blocks of connections across two servers.

What I want is to have 2 (or possibly more) hub servers, each configured with all of the 80 some odd connections, doing load balancing with something like the NLB service. I assume this would work because the DFSR hubs could dynamically split the connections between each other and then just replicates the updates received from those connections to the other hub.

I know you can do a failover DFSR cluster, but from what I have read, a Windows failover cluster does not do load balancing. So only one node in a DFSR failover cluster is actually active at a time- is this correct? If so it doesn't seem to meet my requirements for load balancing.

I have found no docs related to setting up a NLB cluster with the DFSR service. Is this even possible\supported? If so, can someone provide info regarding a best practices way a doing this or a doc?

Thanks a lot.

WSE2012 R2 ReFs client backup support

Hi - I'm using Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, with Windows 8.1 clients

I've created a test ReFs storage space on a client pc, but the WSE's client backup doesn't seem to recognise ReFs client volumes (it only sees NTFS volumes)

Any idea when/if ReFs volumes support will be added to WSE's client backup/restore ?

Plan for reformatting drive used in DFS replication?

$

Hi, I am in the process of adding storage to one of my servers. It's a member of a dfs replication group, and the data is in an MBR partition.  In order to get the space I want, I'll need to format in GPT.  The data is backed up using DPM.

Can anyone confirm for me that this is the best path to use?

1.  Verify the backup

2. Adjust the replication schedule so that replication will not occur during my format process.

3. Format the drive using GPT.

4. Replace the data from backup.

5. schedule the DFS replication to start.

It's my hope that once the data is replaced, and DFS starts replication, it will only see the changes made during the time of the format, and will gracefully resume replication.

If anyone has advice, I'd be happy to have it.

Thanks,

Kevin

Windows Server 2008 leaves files open

$

Hi,

we run a Windows Server 2008 which is file server and terminal server as well.

Some users got the problem that open files and directories wont get closed probably.

So there are many open files left on the server. For example user b has currently 130 files open. But this is not true. When you take control over the remote session on the terminal server there are no files open in explorer or applications.

How can we fix this problem? Is there a possibility to set a timeout for open files?

Thanks a lot.

Cheers,

Sebastian

Internet Information Services (IIS) FTP 7.5 550 Keyset does not exist

So I performed a replication of IIS from an old server to a new server (IIS 6.0 to IIS 7.5 being the current new server). I've copied over all of the sites and virtual directories. I can FTP and DIR on all of the newly copied virtual directories and sites except for one, however it works perfectly fine on the old server.

New server

230 User logged in.

Remote system type is Windows_NT.

ftp> dir

200 PORT command successful.

550 Keyset does not exist

ftp> cd xxxxxdir

550 The system cannot find the file specified.

ftp>

Old server

Remote system type is Windows_NT.

ftp> dir

200 PORT command successful.

150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls.

02-16-11  08:42AM       <DIR>          xxxxdir

09-16-13  07:48AM       <DIR>          xxxxdir

09-16-13  07:51AM       <DIR>          xxxxdir

09-16-13  07:50AM       <DIR>          xxxxdir

226 Transfer complete.

202 bytes received in 0.0013 seconds (153.98 Kbytes/s)

ftp>

I've read around that it was a permissions issue with a file in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys\xxxxxx but it didn't seem to fix the problem.

All permissions and authorizations are exactly alike between the old and new servers.

Windows Search Slow Server 2008 r2

$

I have a 2008 R2 file server.

Windows search completed it's index, nearly ten million items and search is way too slow. I got quicker results on my 2003 server... Sometimes it doesn't even finish the search... The progress bar just slowly crosses the top without showing any results for *.msi in my user folder as an example...

I've thought about rebuilding index but that will take some time to rebuild with that many items.

Once I start a search I do notice that the indexing process jumps to about 50% CPU... I restarted the service but that hasn't helped.

I need to speed this up or find another solution.

Thanks

Momentary disconnects on shared drive on 2008R2 file server

$

0

I've got a question that I've been scratching my head about for a couple of days, so I figured I'd toss it out there and see if anyone's seen something similar.

I've got a Server 2008R2 file server that hosts several shared drives.  One shared drive is basically for storage of software installers - mostly used by our help desk.  When someone tries to run an installer from that shared drive, it will (about 8-9 times out of 10) fail with the error: "Error reading from file: S:\<filename>.  Verify that the file exists and that you can access it."  The error is usually fairly quick, so I don't think it's a timeout, and even happens on very fast installs.  If there's a retry option, that will usually work, indicating that whatever the interruption was, it's very brief in duration.  Obviously, the exact error varies with the program you're trying to install, but it's as if the user has been disconnected from the share.  This happens on both XP and 7 clients, happens for regular users and domain admins, happens if you browse directly to the share instead of relying on the mapped drive...

I don't see any errors on the file server, and our other drives on that server appear to not be doing this, and neither are our other file servers.  I've tried playing with the idling timeout, I've tried turning off and on SMB signing and some other security-related stuff, but I'm not making progress.  If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate the input!
