Storage Space with traditional Storage Arrays

$

Hello,

i've a Question. At the Moment we use VMware for Virtualization, but we plan to migrate to Hyper-V with Release of Server 2016.

We have 3 Hosts cross connected over two 6GB fibre channel fabric to 2 x Storwize v3700, 1 x IBM DS3514, 1 x IBM DS3400. At the moment we have different RAIDs and LUNs on this Storrage Arrays.

We would like to use Storage Space. But as far as i read i can not use traditional storrage arrays like the IBM Storwize v3700 or DS3512 for Storage Spaces?

My thought was either to use every disk as a Raid0 and pass it to the 3 Hosts, or make for example Raids 10 on the Storage Arrays, pass them to Storage Spaces in "Simple" Mode because Storrage Arrays delivers security.

What's the best Deployment for this Configuration with a Hyper-V Cluster

Greetings
Tobias

Offline Files Not Syncing

Hello,

We have Offline Files enabled for our laptop users. Our file server crashed and was unrecoverable. I was able to recover a version of the server from 2013. Then I restored the documents from backups up until the date of the crash (19th). I expected the files on the laptops that were created and modified since the 19th to sync to the file server like normally but it doesn't appear to be working.

Users who created documents while the server was inaccessible cannot find the files now that the server is back up. They didn't sync like they were supposed to so any new files they created or were never synched disappeared. So now we have missing files since you cannot find the document on the laptops and they weren't synched to the file server.

Why did that happen? Shouldn't they have synced to the server once it came back online? Or at the very least still be accessible on the laptop and not just disappear? Is there any way to view the files in the CSC folder to hopefully restore the missing files?

Any help is very much appreciated!

If we install a enterprise certificate in local computer store then will it be automatically place in current user store.

I am installing a self signed certificate in the local computer account but it is not showing in the current user personal. What type of certificate we can use to install in local computer personal so that it can automatically place in current user personal store.

DFS Replicatoin

I have a bit of an odd issue. I am doing DFS replication on my Windows Server 2008R2 machine.  When I restart the server I have to go in and manually restart DFS Namespace and DFS Replication for DFS to work correctly.  I am not seeing anything in the event log either.

DFS Namespace Effect on an Active AD Domain Environment

I am a new administrator in a domain environment using Active Directory to authenticate.  Doing gpupdate on client computers tends to fail if it is pointed to the wrong DFS, where going to "\\this.is.a.fake.domain\SysVol" and changing the DFS Active referral fixes it.  I get the UNC from the failure error when running a gpupdate.

I see that we have DFS Management roles installed, but nothing is configured for either Namespace or Replication.

My question is: what is the effect that setting up a DFS Namespace in an already active domain environment have?  Will this even solve my issue?  Will I wreck authentication (it's a 200+ user environment)?

To anyone who might read this, thanks for your time!

Deduplication corrupt data not removed - help!!

I have a Windows Server 2012R2 server running dedup on a volume where I store Veeam backup files and some other misc.  I was applying dedup only to my GFS restore points, and getting fantastic results - nearly 90% dedup.  Unfortunately, I did some partition resize work and all of my backup files became corrupt.  I deleted the backup files that were corrupt, and plan to restore them from a backup.  However, Now the volume is not showing the correct free space, and I discovered 4.5TB in the following folder:

\system volume information\dedup\chunkstore\{3317C8........}

I went into the dedup settings and discovered windows had also disabled dedup on the volume (presumably from me modifying it with a 3rd party tool).  I Re-enabled dedup on the volume and attempted to run a scrubbing job, which produces nothing but errors in the event log (4134 "the data is invalid" and effectively crashes (does not get past 1%).  I ran a garbagecollection job, but it does not delete the data in the system volume information folder, and shows the following error:

"File server deduplication encountered corruption while enumerating chunks in a chunk store"

At this point I just want to start over with dedup.  How can I clean up/remove all dedup data without formatting the partition?  I have other backups that are being written to this volume (dedup excluded), so formatting would be a headache.

I know it is not supported, but say I was able to gain access to the SVI folder - could I delete the "chunkstore" folder and effectively allow dedup to start over?  Thanks for your help.

Windows 2012 as file server

Hey there.  We are using Windows 2012 as a file server to store archived data.

Lets say my server "FS" has 1 TB of storage data (attached via iSCSI share).  Is there a feature where I can turn on to track "version" change of the data?  Lets say I want to store 30 days for restoring purpose.  I want a snapshot of each day and only the changes after.  I am not talking about full backup, etc.

I heard something about VSS that might be what I am looking.

Thanks ahead.

Best practice to permission shares

HI,

Please help to see if there is a best practice document to set ACL on shares. Is it good to have full access on Share level and Security group level access on NTFS or Full control on NTFS level and Security group level access on Shares?

Please help to find out if any articles are out there to answer the best way.

Hyper-V Server 2012 Replication Group between Server 2012 and 2012 VM

I have just completed a new config that is using Server 2012 Standard as  a HYPER-V server. Under this server I have created a VM with Server 2012 as the NOS. I have a second server with Server 2012 Standard that is being used for our File Server exclusively. I have created Replication Group between the File Server and the VM. Both running same Server 2012 Standard, Using DFS, I have created a successful Replication within the group. Happy...up to this point!!

I have found that I can create a folder on the File Server and it replicates the folder on the VM. That is good. However, if I create a Folder on the VM Replica server, the Folder does not Replicate back to the File Server. I was assuming this was a two service where not matter which server had files or folders created, they would be Replicated. Am I missing a step or perhaps there is something amiss with my network? Please let me know what you know.

Thanks,

Duggan

Unable to repair Storage Pool

I have a year old storage pool built one 4 1 TB disks on my Server 2012R2 Home Server.  I have apparently populated it with flaky Samsung drives as I have managed to lose 2 in the first year of use. I have suffered a complete and total drive failure, plugging in the drive hard stops the machine, it won't even boot with it plugged in.  This has prevented me from properly retiring the faulty drive.

Info about the cluster:

4 1 tb disks were installed.  The faulty disk has been replaced with a new 2tb volume.
the Volume is configured as a 1 tb disk in parity.
The 4th disk was forced to be installed when the first disk failed, I could not return the set to healthy the first time a disk failed without adding back 2 drives.

Steps performed (in order):

  1. Removed faulty drive
  2. Installed replacement 2 TB disk
  3. Powered on Server
  4. marked faulty drive as retired via PowerShell
  5. Added replacement drive to Pool via gui
  6. repaired volume (took about 45 minutes to complete)
  7. Attempted to remove drive via PowerShell (receive error: "Remove-PhysicalDisk : The requested object could not be found." see below screen shot)

  8. Attempted to repair the volume again but I receive a "failed" error message (see below Screen shot)

I have rebooted the server several times and all the Bing searching I can do gives me the steps I have followed already.  Any suggestions other than off loading the data to another drive and rebuilding the array?

DFS-R stopping every night

I have been struggling with issues related to DFS-R for a couple of weeks. First, the servers were experiencing pro-longed periods high memory pages/sec. The BPA indicated that the staging space was too small, so I increased the limits for some but then needed additional disk space. I added more storage and split the staging space between the two disks. I also disabled RDC on some of the volumes based on a TechNet performance tuning document.

The two servers replicate bi-directionally, full mesh with two members. On the 28th between 12 AM and 1 AM, the replication from member A to member B stopped. Member B continued to replicate to A successfully. This affected all shares being replicated from Member A. The issue was discovered on 11/09.

Restarting the DFSR service resumes replication. Everything works until sometime between 12-1 AM then it stops replicating again. In the event logs (app, sys, dfsr) there are no errors indicating a problem. If I run the diagnostic report while it's not replicating, it finds no problems, not even backlogged files. It appears that DFSR just quits monitoring file changes.

The only that seems to run every morning during this time frame is the DFSR Defrag which reports successful completion in less than 2 minutes. Eventid's 700,701. Between 10/28 and 11/09, DFSR Defrag never ran.

Memory utilization is below 50%, processor queue length below 3, disk queue length on all volumes peaks at 1.5.

Any thoughts on why it might be failing?

File Classification does not work

Hello!

I went all the steps from this article https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831672.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396 but to no avail:

Q1: Why have my SecretDoc.txt not been classified?

Q2: When creating a regular expression content classification rule MS says"11. In the Minimum Occurrences column, type10, and then click OK." -Why the Minimum Occureences should be 10, not 1 - doesn't a single card number per a document make it a confidential one???

Thank you in advance,

Michael

DFSR dirty shutdown recovery and active file shares; What happens to modifications?

$

Scenario: Two Server2012R2 file servers. Server1 is the server that users use for day to day file share access. Server2 is a read-only server that is used for disaster recovery. Server 1 suffers a dirty shutdown. DFS Event 2212 is logged. 4 hours later, 2218 is logged. What happens to file modifications made during this auto recovery period? It sounds like any changes made BEFORE the dirty shutdown that did not get replicated to Server2 will be lost, as Server2's versions will come back to overwrite Server1. But what about changes while auto recovery is taking place? Will they be lost?

Does fsmgmt.msc have a 256 KB buffer limit for receiving data?

$

Hi,

We have NAS box with thousands of shares. The number of shares have been growing rapidly. At some point managing the NAS device with MMC became impossible as clicking on the Shares threw an error

Error 1783: The stub received bad data

Similar error has been documented for services.msc in KB number 2028588

I'm assuming the same limit applies for fsmgmt.msc as well and this is probably the reason we are unable to use MMC to manage the NAS.

So question is whether this buffer limit has been removed in Windows 2012 and Windows 10? Or is there a means to increase this buffer via registry or similar means.

Thanks in advance.

File Auditing and DFSR

$

I have had an issue now where files have come up missing from DFSR replication.

To be fair we have had journal wraps caused by virtual machine snapshots and the second time a misconfigured replication group.

Some users have asked what else is missing. We have not turned on file auditing on our DFSR servers for 2 reasons:

1) we have about 22 TB of replicated data at the hubs and average about 1 TB at each branch office.  I am afraid making the auditing changes will cause every file to replicated to every server, and subsequently cause backlogs and more journal wrap.

2) I am afraid auditing will cause much resource contention for the DFSR servers.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what may be a better alternative?
