Error removing physical disk marked as Retired

$

I have Server 2012 with one storage pool and one virtual disk. The virtual disk uses layout parity and thin provisioning. It contained 4 physical disks. One of the physical disks failed. It was pulled and larger replacement disk was added.

The server manager now lists the failed drive as "Retired". Every attempt to remove the disk results in:

Error removing physical disk: There was an error removing {179f49b7-7657-11e2-93ea-806e6f6e6963} (fileserver). One of the physical disks specified could not be removed because it is still in use.

If I check the properties of the virtual disk, it states under health: "Physical disks in use", and lists the retired drive as "Lost Communication".

The physical drives have lots of free space, and the new drive has been added to the storage pool (but not the virtual disk). The "repair virtual disk" option is grayed out.

It seems I cannot attach the virtual disk until I remove the retired drive.

How can a disk that's sitting unplugged in another room be "in use"? How do I remove the retired drive?

Basic IIS & dbase website query?

I have a new client whose web dev used MS-SQL and .NET to create their site...works fine.

But I need to add a blog now to same - and the web dev is asking for a whole bunch of $ - plus they've stated that WP will not run on a MS server...which I know of course to be untrue as I run more than a dozen other clients on one of our w2k3 servers just fine (php & mySQL were installed too).

So my question is should I "move" the client over to my own server and now host it on my own - even tho I'm not really adept at .NET builds....being a classic ASP guy still? And if that's the way to go - what do i need to ask the web dev "for" to make that move?

Any help/counsel here would be great....

How to scan to a SMB share on WINdows Server 2012 using a RICOH printer

This is a thear basically with the same problem as descibed in: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/45f11013-3e03-4b3b-afa0-743131c479f0/ricoh-aficio-mp-c2051-scan-to-folder-windows-server-2012-error-authentication-with-the

But, the new firmware does not solved the problem. It´s hard to find the firmware for download, where they get the firmware/ How can we know the latest firmware for ricoh printers?

We tried to disable SMB2/3 and does not solve too.

I heard about a problem related  to 128 bits encryption, but i´m not confident in this solution, because since 2003, 128 bits encryption is very common, maybe reduce the security level for LAN manager, SMB can help?

SMB file transfer issue on windows 8

Issue: When I transfer the file from UNIX OS to Windows Server 2012 (SMB 2.0 or 3.0) system using SMB (Samba), the file gets transfer but contains of file dose not (Only empty file size of 0 KB gets created on windows Server 2012).

Additional Info:

  • File transfer from UNIX to Windows Server 2003 (SMB 1.0) works fine.
  • Command: Smbclient //backroom/e -Utest%abc -c "put /tmp/test.txt abc\abcdata\test.txt"
  • This produces the following error:
    • Error writing file:  ERRSRV - ERRerror (non-specific error code.)
    • 0.0kb/s transferred
  • There is not logging in Event log (System and application) in Server 2012 regarding this failure.

Enabling Offline Files breaks Drive mappings to remote sites

I have a Windows 2008 R2 Server that I am using for RDS. I have enabled Offline Folders on the server but have not configured it.

After enabling It breaks Drive mappings to my remote plant File Server. The Error is    " (Driveletter) Refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or your network, and then thry again. If it still cannont be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

Drive shares to local servers work. Drive shares to other servers at the remote plant work. But this one gets an error unless I Disable Offline Files then it works again. Any Ideas.

I have already applied the following Hotfixes with no results.  KB2610379, KB2715922, and KB2761645.

Migrating DFS "master" to new server

$

I have a pair of server 2003 R2 servers that have a DFS namespace between them, some folders are replicated between them and some are only on one server but not the other but are still part of the namespace

-the Primary DC needs to be upgraded to server 2008 R2 but before we do that we will be migrating all of its Roles to a new server 2008 R2 box

I have already run DCpromo on the new server (have not yet seized roles though)

I installed DFS and started replicating to the new server in the current namespace, data is replicating but I want to be sure that the new server will take over as the DFS boss so that the old server can be removed.

One thing that I noticed that gave me pause was that once I started replication on the first folder the used space on the main (old) server went up by about 5 GB or so (I am guessing this is due to the staging? but it has not gone back down)

I have done extensive research on this but I have not found a guide that specifically says it will work from server 2003 R2 to 2008 R2 (most are just for 2003 R2 to 2003 R2).

Can anyone who has done this before give me any advice or point me to a good resource? It looked pretty straight forward when I started but small things I did not expect ar making me nervous, like even thought the new server is replicating and those files say their referral status is enabled I do not see the new server in the list of namespace servers, should I manually add it?

Transparent caching of big files in a gigabit LAN

$

Hi,

We have requirement to cache big files locally in all systems when they hit first time to the storage. I believe transparent cache from Windows 7 will help to do this. I have tried enabled offline caching and enabled transparent caching with default latency in local group policy.

Caching is working fine, but the problem is when we hit second time with same set of files, we will be getting data again from network storage not from the cache (The only option I found is if the cache is happened first time and server is down, then only the cache can be utilized).

In our scenario, we would need system should use the cached files even though the network storage online. Please suggest is anybody know how to optimize the network performance using the cache.

Best, Surendra

storage manager for SANs could not add the portals to the target

$

Hi, I'm trying to create an iscsi connection between two Dell Powervault nx3100 machines running StorageServer 2008.  I have the networking set up, and have dedicated 2 nics on each machine and have MPIO running on both machines.  I assigned IP addresses to the nics using 2 different subnets.  On the machine with the initiator, I added 2 target portals, and specified the outgoing IP addressfor each.  I then went to the machine which will be the target, and tried to add a target by using:

Sotrage manager for SANs/manage iSCSI targets, add target, but when I try to complete the process, I get the following error:

"Storage manager for SANs was able to create the target, but could not add the portals to the target because the operation is not supported by the provider"

I have not yet created any LUNs, because the documentation leads me to believe that I need to create the target first.

Does anyone have any hints on what I'm missing?

Thanks,

Kevin

Help with NFS Services in Windows 2008

$

Hi,

I´m having a problem with NFS Services in Windows 2008. My customer environment is composed by  a Win 2008 Domain Controller SP2 (running Microsoft Identity Management for Windows - NIS Server), a Win 2008 Storage Server SP2 File Server running NFS Server (DELL NX3000 and a Win 2003 Domain Controller) . I have properly configured User Mapping under Windows 2008 and I´m able to see that NIS service is working (using ypcat in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 workstation). But when I try to access some folder using a non-user root, i got a "permission denied error". I can mount with a no-root user, but I can´t access the folder even with permissions properly setup. Anonymous access works fine.

I have tried to demote the Windows 2003 server, reinstalled NFS Services in the File Server and the "NIS" in the domain controller but it not works. I have setup a similar test environment - the difference is that i´m using Windows 2008 Standard SP2 as the file server since I don´t have a NAS Appliance to test - and everything is working fine, so I believe i´ve done the right configurations, but in production, it not works. Can someone help me ? Is there some known issue the Windows 2008 Storage Server ? Or is there some way to install the Win 2008 Storage Server in a virtual machine to put in my test environment, to do more research in this case ?

VDS causing the disk to pause

$

We are having some issues with VDS and I was hoping to get some ideas.

To recreate the error at will, I open a cmd prompt and go to the root of the drive.  Then I type "dir /s"  Next I start diskmgmt.msc.  It starts and then pauses for a very long time at "Loading Disk Information."  If I look at my command prompt, the directory listing is visibly frozen.  Once Disk Management displays its data, the directory listing continues on.

If I open Resource Monitor, it displays vds.exe accessing a lot of files.  After a few moments vds starts reducing the number of files that it is accessing and then Disk Management displays data.

While vds is accessing the files, our SQL based product has issues because of the latency.

Anyone have any thoughts or solutions?

DFS - users not getting file lock, how do I force namespace to hit local file servers first

$

Subject says it all. We have DFS setup between two sites. I need to make sure users hit the local file server before going to a different site. How do I do this? I've read through some of the basic setup and functionality white papers of DFS but can't find anything specific to this issue.

Also, how can I test (on the fly) which physical server users are connecting to when they are hitting the namespace.

TIA!

Unhealthy Parity Disk refuses to repair

Setup:

  • Windows Server 2012 XEON proc (running at about 5% capacity), 16GB RAM;
  • Internal Perc RAID controller (raid 5 with 2 partitions, OS and Data - OS @50%, Data @ 10%, pagefile on Data)
  • External 5 x 1TB USB 2.0 disks.

Original Config:

  • Storage Pool contains all 5 external Drives
  • VHD configured to use all 5 drives in a parity disk

Situation:

  • One external drive failed.
  • I added another 1TB disk to the pool, removed the old one, and hit repair disk on the VHD in Server Manager
  • Nothing Happened.
  • Read online that I needed enough available disk space aside from the original VHD to copy the entire disk - so I added 5 more 1TB disks to the Pool
  • The Server crashed (no idea why) and wouldn't reboot.
  • Disconnected the external drives and recovered the OS.
  • Reconnected the external drives and Pool Manager recognized them, but the VHD was no longer "Attached" to the server. So I selected Attach. Progress bar shows active and 24hrs (roughly) later, the VHD now shows as Attached, but unhealthy.
  • So I select Repair (again). This time, the repairing shows up, in the line in Server Manager, next to the VHD, for about a minute (never leaves 0%) and then goes away.
  • Right clicking on the VHD shows that it is again Detached from the server.
  • Rinse and Repeat has the same results.
  • WTHIGO?!!!!

Can anyone point me in the direction of some way to recover this parity VHD?

Trying to resolve scan to folder issue on filser server (shared folder)

Scanner Hardware: using Knoica Minolta multifunction biz hub (model C450) and
folder is on Windows Server 2008 Ent with clustered drive. and offcourse folder is shared,

Service account used: svcscan

Folder is configured with svcscan permission (Modify/read/write)
Scanner is configured with svcscan to push scan job to user home drive which is on

but that does not work. Got the error "scan job was done improperly, check the log".
unfortuately log does not give any information ( as usual)
same service account work perfectly fine when sending job to folder on local machine on same domain, that proves scanner is working & configured properly and service account (svcscan) is working.
What you suggest/ recommend and need your help to resolve

Potential Disc error - "Volume Bitmap is Incorrect"

When SQL Server and file share backups begun failing on a Windows 2008 SQL server I started investigating. There were also SQL Analysis server issues which our Sage support provider claims to have dealt with.

The Proliant ML360 G6 seems to be operating normally apart from the backups - which verify as corrupt in the case of SQL, and fail on the backup of a share because "directory not found" when it's actually there and the data is good.

HP Array Diagnostics show no problem. The lights on the server indicate that there's an issue with bay 1 and 2 which is not the same drive but rather the C drive.

So I'm in a position of not being able to back up the data to tape and not having much to go on with fault diagnostics.

Using robocopy with out the /MIR switch.  Approx 6TB, manually recreated shares.  1000s of files are being skipped, assume it it because users are online.  Prior to go live, plan was to close all sessions and files and do one last robocopy.

What is the easiest way to prevent people from connections be re-established.

robocopy switches are

robocopy "<source>" "<destination>" /E /SEC /COPYALL /V /NP /NFL /NDL /MT:32 /Z /TEE /R:30 /W:10 /LOG:E\log.txt

Files on 2012 Storage Spaces unreadable after reinstalling OS

Hi there,

I have a test setup running HyperV Server 2012.  There are three physical disks, one for the HyperV installation and the other two set up as a storage pool with various virtual disks.

Deciding to have a fresh start, I removed all but one of the virtual disks and reinstalled HyperV server.  After the installation finished I have attached the virtual disk and marked it as read/write and it all appears fine, however whenever I try to access any file larger than a few kb it fails.

Small files work fine, but anything larger gives a "The file cannot be accessed by the system" error

Any ideas on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

Where is the documentation for selecting type of iSCSI virtual drive when installing iSCSI Target Server (R2 Preview)

$

I'm planning to try guest clustering in my lab with R2 Preview.    I thought an iSCSI failover cluster of hosts would probably be necessary, and apparently iSCSI block storage is a good solution (without having an actual SAN available ).

I'm searching for info (if anyone can post a couple of URLs) on selecting the type of virtual iSCSI drives, since it's taking my quad core Phenom II 3.0 GHZ server with internal 1.0 TB SATA II drive and 4 GB RAM about 1 min. / GB to "clear" the iSCSI virtual drive.  The 1 GB quorum took only 1 min., but the 998 GB VM virtual iSCSI drive is taking 998 minutes....so wanted to know if selecting dynamic disk would be a better choice.

This is a test lab, not production, using desktops with R2 Preview.........Thanks for any answers!
