i setup 2 x 2012r2 std with 1x 4tb drive attached to each of them.
I have installed dfs namespace and replication roles on each of them.
Currently our domain functional level is 2003, so when i go create a namespace it doesnt let me check off "ENABLE WINDOWS SERVER 2008 MODE".
1. What does this mean going forward if i create the namespace without this option checked?
a. once the functional level in the domain is raised can i enable this option in the namespace?
the plan is to MOVE currently existing san cif shares and windows file server shares to these 2 dfs servers(thats why the 4tb drive was added to each one so it can hold all this data)
2. How do i MOVE the data from these other cif and windows file shares(and bring their security rights) into a share on these DFS servers? i know i will have to remap their drives on their pc's to point to this new namespace.
in the end all im trying to do is consolidate all these external cif and file server shares onto the local storage presented to this dfs server. i thought with dfs i could use it to replicate that data from the cif share and from the windows file servers to a local folder on the dfs server and then 1 night do a cutover on the pc network drive mappings.
i thought with dfs i could do this, and maybe im mistaken. any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.
