DFS Permissions inherited from "Parent Object"

Hi guys.

I have a standalone DFS server that is pointed to by a domain-based DFS server.  This is done to allow different parts of the organization to manage their own DFS structures while combining them into a centrally-mapped drive letter.  I'm trying to tighten up security on our structure, and no matter what I try to do, some folders are showing permissions I did not set that show "Parent Object" in the inheritance column.  I know I can turn off inheritance for individual folders, but there are a lot of them, and I'd really rather fix it at the source, if only I could figure out what the source is.  The parent folder on the storage itself doesn't have them, nor does the parent in the top-level DFS shared folder for our department.

Our department's DFS is running on a Windows 2003 VM under VMWare ESXI 5.5. I plan to upgrade this soon, but I'd like to get the permissions right first. Replacing all permissions from the parent NTFS folder is not an option, because it would break permissions on many subfolders and files and cause a ton of resetting permissions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Derek
