Upgrading Hard Drive in server running DFS

Hi There, could someone advise me on the best way of doing a hard drive upgrade on a server?

We have a main SBS2011 Server with a OS Drive (C:), and a Data Drive (D:).

Some folders on the data drive are replicated to another 2012 R2 server running DFSR over a VPN.

I wish to upgrade the size of the Data Drive by copying the data to a USB Drive, installing a larger Drive into the server and copying back... but obviously I don't want to have to replicate large amounts of data over DFSR over a VPN.

So, what steps should I take before, during and after the upgrade to be as smooth as possible?
