network shares not visible; server/domain not visible'

I'm pretty unfamiliar with the windows networking paradigm but have to do some changes on a win2003 server.  I am trying to a folder on a server with hp thin clients connected via terminal services.

The domain name is techna-school; local network uses dhcp.  Server name is school-server, and full name is listed as school-server.techna-school

net-view school-server shows the shared folder as type "Disk"

explorer with "\\school-server" in the address bar shows the folder also.

ping \\school-server won't resolve, nor will ping \\school-server.techna-school

The folder does not show up on the clients, yet another folder set up a long time ago does.

The thin clients logins are managed via group policy, and security for the shared folder has a single group given all permissions (the group to which the client logins belong.

Thoughts / hints?

Thanks for any clues.
