Which is correct: DIR *.* or MS Windows display?

Windows 2003 SBS all MS updates
USB 2 attached 2TB drive used as backup for various connected PCs, laptops etc.

Situation: Drive J originally had very little space left (a month ago or so) so I deleted quite a few *.zip files that were several months old.  Nearly all the time, afaik, I was prompted with the 'do you want to permanently delete the file' and I said yes.  At the end, the available disk space went from very little to about 900GB.  Since then I have attempted 1) wireless zip file creation from my laptop; 2) wired zip file creation from my laptop; 3) copy of a file from another USB2 attached drive to drive J.  None of them work as I keep getting an 'insufficient space' message to drive J.  However, I can create a zip file to another USB2 attached drive via a wired connection.

However, now looking at the available space via Windows Explorer on the Win2K3 SBS system yields a display of about 970GB but a dir *.* yields a display of about 10GB.  Note: the 970GB seems to be what I would expect after deleting so many zip files. Before the "dir *.* I've even ran a chkdsk j: /r and nothing was found (ran for about 36+ hours).

Which is correct?  What suggestions to get things in-sync are suggested?

TIA
